Oh my god. The leaks were true. They were all true. They have entirely ruined Star Wars. Holy ****. None of it meant anything. The Chosen One. The Clone Wars. Anakin's fall and redemption. Luke's hope. Every battle. Every death. All meaningless.
I want to throw up. It shouldn't be bothering me this much but oh god it's bothering me this much.

Yeah, otomo fan, I totally agree with you. I totally get that George got pretty lucky just making stuff up as he went until ROTJ. The sister thing was completely not needed. Why ruin the tension between Luke, Han and Leia anyway? Still, if the Ewoks had been Wookies I think it would have still held up as a pretty good final movie.
Actually, and this is just me, the sister thing worked really well. Anytime you watch a movie coming up on it's climax, you know the hero is going to walk away the victor and alive 99% of the time. I think that's why Infinity War was so shocking, they failed and half of them died. But name the hero - Indiana Jones, James Bond, Captain America, Frodo Baggins, Katniss Everdeen, whoever - they always live and walk away a little hurt and stronger for it.
Of course, the same thing happened with Luke, but, with him walking into the final showdown with Vader and the Emperor, Lucas revealing that Leia was Luke's sister meant they were setting up a line of succession in case Luke died. Which meant there actually was a chance Luke was going to die. Had Vader not come back to the light to save his son and just watched him fry, there would have been Leia for the ghosts of Obi-Wan and Yoda to try and train. Because it wasn't just "she's his sister", it was "she's plan B".
Well, remember, I was 5 when ROTJ came out. In fact, I was so young that I hadn't learned how to read yet, and I remember not being able to read the subtitles in the Jabba's Palace scenes.
But ESB had taught me a valuable lesson: our heroes are NOT safe. Luke had his hand chopped off, and Han was tortured and then frozen into a solid metal.
So when Luke was dropped in that Rancor pit, I remember closing my eyes and not wanting to watch, cause I was convinced he was gonna get eaten.
I didn't think ANY of the characters were safe for any reason!! That's the difference between being an actual kid watching this stuff and being fully immersed in it and being a jaded, cynical adult that's seen it all. I was just holding on for dear life when seeing that movie for the first time. Now when I watch a movie, all I notice is all the flaws.
According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, we may still see the legendary family in future tales.
During the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker red carpet premiere, Kennedy spoke a bit about what it's like to come to the end of the sequel trilogy. While she explained that there are mixed emotions, Kennedy also hinted that the Skywalkers may not be done appearing in the Star Wars universe -- the film is finishing the saga, not necessarily the family.
“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Iger said when asked about the company distancing from the trilogy format. “She and I have said, ‘Well, maybe trilogies are too hard, so maybe we’ll make one film and then a sequel,’ but we don’t know.”
There's a thread on the r/StarWarsLeaks subreddit from someone who went to the premier yesterday and basically confirmed everything JediPaxis put out there. Not sure if you saw that or not, but there's like 2,000 comments of panic/hatred and I'm not sure whether it makes me laugh or cry.
Oh boy. Oh man. Settle down....take it easy.....don't get too excited.....
From reddit:
- About the LGBT moment in the movie: " That woman that is close to Leia and Holdo? She kisses a woman in the background at the end."
Dare I dream??? Dare I fantasize that Big Nose Lady is back in this movie??
No. I doubt it. She was clearly one of Rian Johnson's grand artistic visions of subverting the male gaze on traditional female beauty norms. The way he framed her gigantic nose was art and poetry. No way JJ could possibly understand or appreciate it. I'm sure he replaced her with his chubby buddy Snap Wexley instead of asking her to come back.
JJ was just jealous cause Rian is a true auteur and he's just a hack.

I haven't rewatched the OT in a good number of years, but yeah, I'll be the first to admit it's very flawed. But I give it a pass cause it's the Original Trilogy. There are some movies that I can't really judge objectively cause I saw them too many times when I was young and they're just burned into my brain.

Kind of hypocritical then, no? Because at that point it sounds like it’s not about objectively critiquing the films themselves, and more about protecting the sanctity of your childhood because you need to “feel something.”
Which is just as emotionally charged as those who are overly sensitive to any aspersions that are cast on the ST.
There's one element of the plot leaks that I thought would be dominating the discussion once they were confirmed, but I'm not seeing anyone talk about it. Maybe that means that some decent context was given that'll make it better. If so, then . But, if the movie doesn't provide a much better explanation than what is described in the leaks, I don't understand how this isn't a HUGE problem for anyone. I'll put the plot leak in spoiler tags, but I'll provide a setup here first.
If there's one key event to the whole Skywalker Saga plot, it's Anakin's turn to the dark side. Per the PT, he turned because he wanted the power to save Padme (and would've used such power to save his mom before that). Even though he was the *Chosen One,* and was supposedly gifted like no other Jedi before him, he couldn't manifest the power/ability to save those he loved. And it's a power that couldn't be learned (or accessed) by a Jedi.
So, with all of those critical plot points in mind, the TROS leaks say that . . .
. . . Rey and Kylo BOTH have the power to heal and keep people from dying. WTF!? If there's one new Force power that JJ would want to avoid bestowing upon his new characters - so as not to completely **** up the logic behind the story of Anakin and his fall - it would be this healing/resurrection power. But he decides to give it to not one, but TWO, ST characters!? And they apparently don't need to even learn it! This ability just seems to come naturally and instinctively to both! Holy ****!
Again, if a solid explanation is provided, then it might play out perfectly fine. But if it's as random and lacking context as the plot leaks suggest, then this film couldn't take a bigger dump on the PT. And by doing that, it would completely undermine the extension of that story into the OT.
Nobody seems to be addressing this (as far as I can tell), but it's going to be the key thing for me that will make or break this movie.

Agreed. I just think the mere bringing back of the Emperor alone though, presumably alive, completely undermines both the story told in the PT and the ST.

I understand that point of view. But the Palpatine thing could've been executed with a foundation in the PT itself because he basically confirms knowledge about the power to prevent death in that ROTS opera scene. I think it could be done in a number of ways that could even *add* to the larger story of the PT and OT. But this other plot leak I mentioned just boggles my mind because of how completely unnecessary it seems. Can't wait to see how/if it gets explained.

That’s true, good point. Even though it was alluded to in the PT, I still feel it would require some detailed explanation in this film as to what he did exactly in order to preserve himself, which I presume it probably will. But yeah, Rey and Kylo just abruptly being able to possess that coveted, rare power without any explanation would be pretty sloppy.
At the same time though regarding Palpatine’s alleged knowledge of the power to prevent death, I always felt the irony of it was that he suffered the same fate as his own master, in the sense that he can save others from death (possibly the reason why Anakin survived in RotS after him saying he sensed him being in danger), but not himself.
Come to think of it, the theory of Palpatine using the Force to take the life force out of Padme and using it to keep Anakin alive, seems more plausible now.
