Yeah that was always there. Its funny I do find myself prone to questioning things like that though whenever a new release comes out. :lol

Ok, then one more. :lol Did Obi Wan always overhear the clone trooper saying there was no way he could've survived the fall?

I amended my post to add that they also show the Falcon flying away from the exploding Death Star. :lol :duh

Way to just blow the whole movie before anyone even hits "play." :lol

I agree, the opening menus are just wrong. It ruined the ending for my cat.

And how it looks now... I ran out of lighter fluid :( It'll be ashes soon enough. Or perhaps I'll hang onto the melted heap as a memento... or, better yet, send it back to LFL that way. :monkey3

Nice CGI. we know you kept it in all it's untouched glory. :lol

Watched the rest of TESB and ROTJ on blu last night.

Thoughts:

TESB

Blue tint is still on Hoth for a lot of scenes, particularly when Luke is out in the snow after fleeing the Wampa cave, but it seemed like they fixed the color for the AT-AT attack, it looked fantastic.

Still a little too much green on Dagobah, the give-away was R2, you could tell his white shell had a bit of a green hue, which obviously shouldn't have been the case.

The lightsabers looked MUCH better, in fact I'd say they were fixed (as in reversed the mistakes caused by 2004 Lowry transfer) for over 90% of the shots.

New reflection on Leia's window in Cloud City looked nice, the rest of the city enhancements from 1997 looked quite dated.

Vader's "alert my stardestroyer" line is still lame, extra shots of the shuttle still kill the pace of the Falcon's escape. Too bad, I really think I gave the new SE a shot, too.

ROTJ

First off, WOW on the picture quality. I know ROTS is "supposed" to look the best because of its high resolution digital shooting process, but damn if I might have to give the prize to ROTJ. Absolutely THE BEST this film, or possibly any SW film, has looked at home. Just fantastic.

New Jabba door: kind of a weird pan but not as bad as I'd thought from previous internet screencaps.

New Carbonite thawing: pretty quick, not as bad as I was anticipating

The Dug: pretty cool! I thought it'd be lame. He's mostly in the dark and its just a quick shot

Jedi Rocks: even lamer in HD :lol

Blinking ewoks: Very cool! I thought I'd hate them, but they looked much more subtle and natural on the actual blu-ray. I *like* that they were inconsistent in implementing the blinks. Knowing George you'd think he'd be sure that we see every ewok blink at least twice in every shot. But that wasn't the case. Still not necessary, but I wouldn't say they were a bad change.

Space battle: Awesome but ship explosions are still too orange (like ANH, and also thanks to our 2004 Lowry friends.)

Lightsabers: Again, AT LEAST 90% of the shots were fixed, maybe more, honestly I can say I don't have a problem with lightsabers in the new cuts anymore. Much better.

Vader NO: Alas, after being pleasantly surprised by how the Dug and blinking ewoks turned out I hoped that Vader's no would play better on the big screen (as opposed to youtube) as well. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. With the speakings blaring in my living room his "no's" sounded even louder (much louder than Luke's screams and the Emperor's lightning) and not as natural as when I heard it on youtube. Dang it. They were *this* close to at least making this the best "Special Edition" of ROTJ. At least it didn't drown out the following music, which was still satisfyingly epic.

It was very interesting to watch all six films, the full PT and all three SE's in episodic order. I'll keep my OT:SE's after all. But going forward I think my default will be to just keep them as separate trilogies, the original theatrical OT, and the PT. At the end of the day this set, the FIRST home video release ever of the "complete" SW saga, is a historical moment and one that I was happy to experience.

The lost OT scenes on Disc 8 cement this sets historical importance even more. Very cool.

Very good fan review. Thanks!

35mm film stock = much higher resolution than a 1080p digital image. :lecture

As I said before, the best looking film of them all should be TPM, but Lucas botched that from the get-go because they never worked from the highest-quality scan possible (probably because they knew the gazillions of FX shots couldn't possibly be rendered in a resolution high enough... there was just too much of it).

It's probably by design by Lucas (and others beholden to pushing digital technology) has people thinking that AOTC & ROTS should look the best, when in fact they were shot/captured in the lowest-res out of all six films. Unlike TPM & the OT, it's not possible for those 2 to ever be more than 1080p. And while that may be okay for now...

Enough movie talk, let's get into these BTS interviews! The Lorne Peterson stuff is great, along with all of the model and creature shop stuff. Really interesting, you get a sense they literally had to work with what they had at the time. Which I think adds to the overall quality of some of those shots. I had no idea there were as many matte paintings in the OT. They were seamless most of the time, not including you crappy ROTJ Falcon painting.

They should probably go back and redo the SE effects--I watched the documentary on that and the techniques and quality they were doing at that time (which was probably 1993 or 1995) are extremely dated by today's standards.

I have to agree with you... while I'm not a fan of the SE versions, might as well have them looking good. The CGI in the "Jedi Rocks" sequence is particularly horrid.

Time for George to do a complete top-to-bottom overhaul and call it aday :lecture But while doing that give us a nice HD transfer of the unaltered OT :dufd

Can't say I ever noticed these blue hues on Hoth and green hues on Dagobah that keep getting mentioned. :dunno Not stuff I would have been arsed fixing.

I have since they've been on my DVR since 2007ish. It's pretty bad on Hoth, specifically when Ben's ghost is talking to Wampa-drunk Luke. :duh
