I can't get over how surprising this whole thing is. Literally 5 days ago I loooooooved Rian Johnson and felt he was the best thing to happen to SW since JJ agreed to direct VII. All his works up until this were great and the news that they were giving him his own trilogy only reinforced my belief that he was going to deliver the greatest SW movie of all time. The one that would finally top ESB.

It's a damn shame to say that Johnson is now someone I heavily dislike and that his contribution to SW is one massive middle finger to the franchise and a crushing blow to it's mythos.

TLJ is a nightmare. It's something I just didn't think was possible. That a group of idiotic people would butcher the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Master Yoda.

But that's life. Constant dissapointment.

Agree 100%

and for folks saying "they're going in a new direction etc", there are 8 movies and countless books that comprise this universe. going in a different direction shouldn't equate to taking a dump on everything that came before it. IMO KK and RJ essentially did just that

Movies are always ego driven, but I feel like TLJ was far beyond that. It was the work of man looking to leave a very strange, ugly, disrupting stamp on the most beloved franchise ever. I don't understand how he could sit down and write this, and more importantly, how it was approved by Kathleen Kennedy, who up to this point had approved at least decent stuff with TFA and Rogue One.

I don't get it, probably never will.

Worst part is, they fired the directors on the Solo movie because it was too comedic and not really Star Wars, but they let TLJ happen for some reason.

Remind, me which side has been claiming since yesterday that Russian trolls/hackers are responsible for the negative audience reviews? Which side has been posting articles like "Toxic Masculinity Is the True Villain of Star Wars"?

Besides, you, Darth Snoopy, Pixletwin, and others keep belittling critics on a personal level, whereas the detractors are overwhelmingly focused the perceived flaws or relative quality of the film.

You've made some good faith attempts to engage the criticisms, but the others mostly not.

Hmm, are you actually perceiving that I personally resent this film's naysayers? Your post seems to indicate yes and no. If there's a question let me say with a resounding "no" that I'm not upset or resentful at anyone's negativity toward this film. I *do* think that there is great comedy both from the "hyper-melodrama" faction AND the more subdued folks (I'm still laughing at Rorywan's "like the porgs, hated yoda.. what a headstone..." comment, lol) but it's a new freaking Star Wars movie and there's always ample craziness on both sides.

EDIT: Guys slow down, right now I'm responding to posts from two hours ago, I'm never going to catch up to the current discussion at this rate, lol.

Why did Carrie Fisher talk so different/funny? Did she have dentures late in life? And why did she pronounce "Tatooine" as "Dantween" in ANH? Thanks in advance for your well-versed responses.

I'm holding my breath on Solo. I hope to god they didn't castrate Han and make a mess of his story arc :ohbfrank:

Wonder why this level of backlash didn’t immediately happen opening weekend with TFA that movie is worse than TLJ, no?

The backlash is not just about the quality of TLJ....it's about SW in general. The oversaturation of the brand ever since TFA came out. Like anything that's too popular, it must be taken down a notch, so people become less forgiving, they start looking at the flaws, which leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to trolling.

Erik Bauersfeld who voiced Ackbar in ROTJ, TFA, and TLJ died April 2016. When I saw how quickly he was written out of the movie after just the one scene I couldn't help but assume that that he most likely passed before any more dialogue could be recorded.

Laura Dern has been a solid actress for decades. I don't see how anyone could count her (or Del Toro) as diversity hires.

Today's tech can accurately replicate voice.

No problem with Dern's acting performance. I said as much a few posts later. It's the content of the part she is given that is poor.

it wasn't dern's fault, her character wasn't written well and hard to like. She was secretive and preachy, two awful qualities in a supposed leader. made it very hard to embrace her in the film

Wow even Leia’s voice and Dern the actress sucks now. :lol

I guess the only thing left to destroy is the opening space battle, have at it lol

Be gentle to it though I think Wor-Gar and JAWS liked some parts of that scene. :lol

Plastic surgery, Botox or whatever she'd done to herself to appear younger.

She was embarrassing in both films, which was deeply sad. :(

Plus she forgot about autopilot.

Seriously though, her character is way down my list of issues with this film. It's not even an issue really, if everything else had been better.

The movie has already been forgotten anyways just as fast as 2046 was.
