Rian Johnson on the Luke throwing away the lightsaber moment:

"So, that leads you down a really specific path in terms of where his head is at. And if he’s done that and if he’s made this huge Herculean effort to pull himself out of the fight, to hide in, like he says, ‘The most unfindable place in the galaxy,’ it took an entire movie for the most heroic, smartest people in the galaxy to even find him, he’s put himself away. Then some kid shows up that he doesn’t know and shoves this thing that is everything that he has made this huge effort to step away from into his face with this look in her eyes of expectation like, ‘Here you go,’ and what is he going to do? Take it and say, ‘Great. Let’s go save the galaxy.’ He’s made this choice. He’s there for a reason. I knew it was going to be shocking, but I did it because it felt like, obviously it’s a dramatic expression of it, but it’s an expression of honestly the way that he is going to react to that moment."

These were my main issues, I was fine with everything else.

It was too soon for a "soft reboot" and left me feeling no need to see IX.

Ah maybe because they ended the movie on a random kid with a broom who used the force to grab the broom while zooming in on his hand to show that he had Rose's ring/amulet. It was just another wtf moment in a movie full of them. What is so significant about broomkid that they had to end the movie on him? Its a dumb way to end the movie regardless.. We all know everyone has force powers now thanks to rian… maybe he is the new luke skywalker in some new saga Rian is planning. He will use the force to fly, shoot fire from his eyes and freeze people with his breath. He will also be faster than a speeding bullet and more powerful than a locomotive. He will wield lightsabers using the force, without touching them with his hands. He will have sex with girls using his force projection implanting his seed across the galaxy that will become the new jedi order

It's just trying to show the rebellion is growing.

What is so significant about broomkid that they had to end the movie on him?

It confirms the success of Luke’s decision to go out as an inspirational legend, which is the much discussed “spark” that will activate people to stand up (after no one responds to Leia’s message).

It shows that there is hope.

Yeah right after TFA came out Abrams said he really wanted to add gay characters to SW which then prompted Hamill to immediately tweet that he'd be fine if that turned out to be Luke, causing tons of people to start petitioning for it, etc.
