It's a case of 'Damned if they do, damned if they don't"!
If DC had done the 4 or 5 movies, they would have been accused of copying Marvel – so they try to be different and they're still lambasted!
Personally I like what DC have done... let's face it, the characters (for the most part) are so well known, they don't need esablishing like the individual Avengers do... Everyone knows Batman and Superman! I also like that they've set a different tone for their universe... it's more realistic (if a CB can be such) and shows the consequence of these characters and the powers they have, as opposed to the MCU's which seems A-Team-like at times. Plus, if the DCEU and the MCU were to mirror each other for tone etc. the average movie goer would start to lose interest in the genre, and most likely would confuse the two universes – my missus, for example, neither knows nor cares that Batman and Spiderman are not in the same universe. It's like any genre... The Shawshank Redemption is a great prison film, but so is Stir Crazy... we need diversity in the genre or it will die!
True, they'll always face comparison in what they do, which is why they probably went with the darker more realistic tone, but even in that they face criticism and comparison to the MCU movies. It can come down to how well they want to do at the box office too.
For example, BvsS suffered from bad reviews because it was dark, boring, not a very well structured plot. Maybe it wasn't because it was realistic but people compared it a lot to other superhero movies, the most recent one being an MCU movie, which most if not all of the general audience enjoyed, and by comparison BvsS didn't match up, so the DCCU suffers sometimes by choosing that tone, it doesn't always work with their characters. Now if you ask me, Suicide Squad looks more fun, less dark and moody so I think general audiences will like it a lot, and I would like to save my judgement on the DCCU until I see a non Snyder movie because I think it will be a lot better
but for the most part I agree, we need diversity
