Medicom really needs to stop with these sub par headsculpts because they are raping good characters. Leave the good things up to capable companies. Blah. :monkey4

wow. sorry to go back to the 1st page, but i just read this. isn't this what sideshow are doing with the much-loved shaun of the dead. and how about reservoir dogs?

recently i've been more and more critical of medicom because i can't help compare certain aspects to hot toys. but to suggest that it's not a capable company is bull. because then neither is sideshow or even takara. at least they're giving us these cool leftfield characters instead of sticking with safe franchises. and i for one think this will look incredible when it comes out.

Here, here!- (said in my best House of Commons back bench voice)
the Right Honourable (Rt Hon) Mister Samurai raises a fair point!

This figure is another fine example of a Medicom figure. Once again they have given fans another figure that may not have been in the mainstream of movies.

As usual, with every new release lately, pure speculation and second guessing seems to be the norm.

Judgement appears to be made on a limited amount of information and then the figure in question is deemed worthy or unworthy based on the available small amout of information.

Certain people should realise that Medicom cater towards a particular market with a solid base of customers and zoning, and produce figures along the lines of what this market dictates.

As I always do, I will wait until more information comes to hand before I reserve judgment. We all know that to see "real life" photo's of these figures or to actually see them "in hand", they always appear to be heaps better than what you first see about them.

Medicom does some amazing work (I've been a Medi fan for a really long time, initially discovering them because I was nuts for Kubricks for quite some time). I just wish they'd start completely painting their heads instead of casting them in the correctly-colored plastic.

I really should get around to geting my Medi Basquiat figure repainted.

I beg to differ. What are all our judgements made on? What we think about what we know. Sharing that information may shape our views further. What more information do you need? We know who makes it. What they produce, and most have a Medicom figure, so know what to expect. Then the pics. We have pics. We see that it is Sweeney Todd. Unmistakably. We see his outfit is well made and well fitted. It's a super figure. No doubt. The costume is exemplary. The likeness is not there. Just a fact. Then it's what we prefer, that Medicom matched sizes more closely. Though with this figure it would probably fit in well with other larger 1/6th figures, just because it is smaller.

That is one figure I want so much to go with my Warhols, maybe one day.
I actually really like the unpainted look, it's just a different aesthetic and I also think the tranclucence of the base plastic works fantastically for some figures, not all, but many.

And having seen the amazing paint apps on the recent HT POTC, Prison Break and Jor-El I can see your point, but I'm a 'box fresh' kind of guy!
No that isn't a euphemism.

You kind of sound like you are trying to convice yourself. I was trying to say that I will usually follow a figure along it's path of creation to ascertain what the result will be.

I do not condem a figure or a company based on some small pictures as some have vehemently done so.

Hey I have 11 Medicom figures so far and have plans on buying many more. :D

Actually, your review of the Warhol figures is what turned me onto Medicom as a 1:6 manufacturer. I managed to find my Basquiat on a killer closeout at Kid Robot; one of these days I'll jutify paying the price for the Warhol figures (Warhol and Hunter S. Thompson are probably my two biggest artistic influences).

Do you have to quote my whole post? It's just that I don't know why you would. I am not picking on you specifically, but I know you are able to understand, and not one to leap into a defensive stance. So many people are lazy and don't delete the more irrelevant sentences in quotes.

So what do you think I am trying to convince myself of? I'm not getting your drift on that one.

What is left of the path you follow, other than to purchase it and have it in hand? I think you agree with what I have said in my previous post, do you not? I can't see why anyone wouldn't. The pics are small, but they are big enough to see that the resemblance to Depp is not there. You'd have to be blind to say otherwise. As a figure of Sweeny Todd, I can't see Hot Toys making one better. If you want a film version, then Hot Toys, or Sideshow may be the company you'd like to see do it. Why, because Medicoms isn't the film version. Plain truth. I'm going to have to go back through the thread to see what negativity is being vented, because I can't see any of it holding much weight.

I'm not so certain that "the likeness isn't there" from tese tiny pics. Fact is, Medicom doesn't have that terrible a track record with likenesses on recent releases, i.e. Wolverine, Jango Fett, Peter Parker. And yes, I know likeness is ALWAYS open for debate, but I submit that half the problem is usually the factory paint not being nearly advanced enough to show off the sculpt.
I'm a big fan of the ROTJ Vader sculpt, but you'd never know how amazing it is based on pictures as small as the ones we're looking at for Sweeney here. I happen to think the Jack Sparrow sculpt is pretty good, but it takes a painter at home to really finesse and show it off.
So, as to the likeness, I'm going to withhold judgement till he's under my brush. And, oh yes, he will be.

I have a feeling Lecter might not be to shabby a sculpt either. We shall see.....

I just don't understand why these Medi-threads always have to become so convoluted...

All we have are tiny pics, so it's a bit early to judge the figure or likeness.
To me it looks good so far, but it's too small to really tell. Just the same, I think it would be too small to tell if it's a bad likeness.

When I say the likeness or resemblance is not there, I am meaning it doesn't look like Depp. That is clear to see. Whether or not the sculpt itself is good is not the answer. The fact remains that, as the figure is presented to us, it doesn't look like Depp. Even if the sculpt might happen to be off, what you as an artist can bring out, is a testament to your craft. I'd go as far as to say the Medicom Indiana looks more like Ford than the Sideshow one does, even though we know the naked Sideshow sculpt is dead on. Where you are able to highlight the nuances of the sculpt, or if need be, allude to that which is not even present, we who have no talent have to accept that which we are presented. Which is why your skills are in demand to begin with.

The only thing bigger pictures will bring, in this case, is make the dissimilarity to Depp, glaringly obvious.
