some perspective... avp is a fox studio movie. at the time of that interview, cameron was already working on avatar, also a fox movie. would it be professional of him to badmouth a fox film when he needs them to finance his own film?

dont read too much into it. he's just being courteous.

He's James ^^^^ing Cameron. He can say whatever the hell he wants. :lol

After Titanic, they shouldnt give a ^^^^ what he says, as long as he makes the moolah.

Sure, but Ridley Scott certainly didn't directly praise or badmouth the film, but made an obvious allusion that he really didn't approve and he only alluded because of being in a similar position as Cameron. Surely Cameron could have been more coy than using that specific choice of words. And what's so hard to believe about him actually liking it? He did make Titanic. :peace

that's cool. thanks for explaining.

ha! compared to what? other terminator movies?
we're talking about scifi action arnold flicks here. how much "substance" are you seeing in a semi tuck chasing arnold on a motorcycle?
and don't even get me started on "contrived".

WOW!

Because that's all T2 was!

A semi truck chasing Arnold on a motorcycle!

You have got to be ^^^^ing kidding me.

cameron needed to get on fox's good side, knowing he would need the studio's full support for avatar. and yes, i find it hard to believe the same guy who did T2 and aliens can actually like avp "a lot".

it's amusing to me that some people still look down on titanic now. just because teenage girls love it doesn't take the greatness away from the film. the narrative structure is solid and the technical aspect is just breathtaking. even the romance went deeper towards the end than what passes for love story these days.

I don't, just because the mans made some wonderful films doesn't mean that he has the same taste as the rest of us. But yes, that video posted by CelticP definitely is a direct statement, but who knows the interview he gave was before AVPR and the video one is clearly after. And I know Ridley Scott didn't approve, he just didn't say it flat out because of his studio relations, that's what I said in my post, just that if Ridley could be indirect about it for studio relations then why couldn't cameron avoided the hyperbole?

He might have been using a sarcastic tone, who knows.

And I for one, certainly don't look down on Titanic because teenage girls love it, I look down on it because I think the narrative is contrived and there's plenty of bad dialogue. The romance bored the hell out of me, but that's just me. I don't agree that it's necessarily deeper than what passes for a love story these days but a bunch of crap certainly does.

direct indirect, really who gives a...? cameron is not ridley, ridley is not cameron. you're just arguing semantics.

i admit dialogue is not cameron's strongest suit. but his narrative structure is. and that was evident to me in titanic, just as it was evident in all his previous movies. the romance there is no more contrived than in the abyss and T1. if it bored the hell out of you, then maybe romance is not your thing.

Nah I like Romance, just not the sort that Titanic had to offer. But that's just my thing.

In terms of the Cameron thing, all I was trying to say was that its ambiguous whether or not he actually liked AVP, and based on that I'm just curious as to what he thinks about TS. I guess can't say whether or not it was his 'real' opinion or if it was based on fidelity or kindness, but if he really enjoyed it I don't see why he wouldn't at least have one or two good things to say about TS. That's all, but I suppose I see your point.

Yeah I'm sorry folks, I meant to say AVP, not AVPR. I'll edit my first post. You have to admit they're slick little acronyms though.

Here's what James had to say, in context.

JAMES CAMERON: Yeah. Ridley and I talked about doing another ALIEN film and I said to 20th Century Fox that I would develop a 5th ALIEN film. I started working on a story, I was working with another writer and Fox came back to me and said, "We've got this really good script for ALIEN VS PREDATOR and I got pretty upset. I said, "You do that you're going to kill the validity of the franchise in my mind." Because to me, that was FRANKENSTEIN MEETS WEREWOLF. It was Universal just taking their assets and starting to play them off against each other.

QUINT: Milking it, totally.

JAMES CAMERON: Milking it. So, I stopped work. Then I saw ALIEN VS PREDATOR and it was actually pretty good. (laughs) I think of the 5 ALIEN films, I'd rate it 3rd.

QUINT: Ummm...

JAMES CAMERON: I actually liked it. I actually liked it a lot.

Actually, I agree with Cameron. All he's saying is that AVP is better than any Alien movie after Aliens. Alien 3 was a shallow rehash of the original and Alien Resurrection was a laughable flop plagued with bad acting (more disappointing as it's from great actors) and a ridiculously LOL ending. At least AVP was a fairly original concept and a fun popcorn movie. He's right! :lol

Proof that Scott's a whore! :lol

Alien 3 rocks. Cameron can suck it.

It was the most ballsiest sequel ever. Theres a lot of good stuff in that movie, but most people ignore it because they want Aliens 2.

I dig Res....but it's not very good. :lol

It was the laziest sequel ever. They recycled the entire story from the first movie and changed the environment from a ship to a prison planet and the alien from a human-based xenomorph to a dog-based one.

I can respect the criticism of Alien 3 to an extent, but i really loved it. Took the BEST aspects of the original and didn't merely swap out locales but introduced a completely new expansion of that universe. Sure its not necessarily 'better' than the first two but that's for reasons that were in many ways out of Fincher's hands.

We got an expedition in 1, a rescue/action adventure with 2, and in 3 we got to explore the underbelly of this future with the all male prison. It was also really really interesting as a sort of 'gender bender' and an exploration of sexual themes largely unexplored in previous films.

Shouldn't be so immediately dissed.

Alien 3 isn't a bad movie. It at least has a plot and that makes it better than Terminator Salvation.

have to side with thenammagazine here. plot point for plot point it's the same exact story that's been regurgitated in countless crappy slasher movies before and after. just because the production design look good doesnt make it art.

also i read that fincher disowned the film and left production before editing began, citing studio interference. that should tell you what he thinks of the film. glad he moved on to better things.

Just watched T4 salvation yesterday. I'd give it a 3 out of 5 rating.

Prolly cause I expect too much out of it. Its slightly better than T3, but in no way on par to T2 or T1 for that matter.

Fighting and battle scenes are O-K, but lack the great story line that the first two had. The dialogues are a bit corny as well.

The weight of the movie was supposedly on marcus, but I think Sam and the writers couldn't really highlight the character well in the movie. This movie looks like its an episode from sarah connor chronicle; monotone, boring, action packed but lacked the essence. Fail to deliver the hype it build up, even with bale on it.

I agree with cameron. AvP was the 3rd best in the alien series and second best in the predator series. Now AvPR sucked terribly.
