Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

Kevin Feige has already said that while The Avengers contain all of the Marvel Heroes that it will be separate from the rest of the films. That the events of the film will influence but not drive the rest of the films. He quote was something a kin to "You won't see Thor all of a sudden stopping for tea with Tony Stark".

Even if this flops hard, Marvel Studios will still continue with Thor, Cap, Iron Man. There is even rumor that another Hulk film with Ruffalo is in predevelopment for after The Avengers.

The reason it's a Hail Mary is because everyone, industry as well said that a film like The Avengers wouldn't work, that is why WB kept their heroes separated. Iron Man seemed to be working and the The Incredible Hulk tanked. Thor wasn't done as well as it could have and Cap was mixed in terms of reviews, all of the pieces didn't align as they should have (remember originally Cap was to come and then The Avengers the month after), things didn't set up as originally planned but Marvel Studios still has to throw it because of everything leading up to it. That's the Hail Mary analogy.

That makes sense. The movie is a heck of a gamble. I guess they are banking on it being greater than the sum of its parts.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

It probably would have been better if I had said if 2011 had been a crap year for Marvel Studios. I guess back in 2008 Iron Man's performance probably compensated for the Incredible Hulk's performance. If Thor and Captain America had gotten the reaction that Green Lantern did I would think we might not be having this discussion or we would be discussing a movie called Iron Man and Friends.
I was always most worried about Thor panning out because I imagined that would be the most difficult to adapt.

I think the success of Thor was with two very key aspects. The first was downplaying him as a "god." I didn't see how that would work in a "real life" world and what they did, "mankind has a habit of deifying that which they can't understand" was perfect. The second was casting Kenneth, a Shakespeare nut, to do the film. Unfortunately, what kept it from being truly epic was what wound up on the cutting room floor and with him gone, I have little faith in the sequel. :(

I hope at this stage of the game Marvel isn't thinking of this movie as a "Hail Mary." If it comes off as a total cash grab and a stinker, they throw several franchises down the toilet and are looking at either rebooting everything or they start hoping they can let Iron Man, Thor and Cap take a back seat for a while as they focus on less high profile properties.

It is hard to wrap my brain around how they are going to pull it off but I'm hopeful. Being four months and having not really seen a "money shot" yet is a little disconcerting but so many elements of this movie are still shrouded in secrecy I guess its anyone's guess at this point.

Not to sure. They know there are several franchises depending on the success of The Avengers. So I don't think they'll tread lightly. A blessing in disguise too is they have Disney's pocketbooks to reach into. And I think they'll utilize that here as the grand scheme of things calls for an epic action movie, not campy coffee shop dialogue between characters. And as Carl and Mike have already mentioned, this is where the worry about Joss comes into play and I agree, it's entirely warranted.

Its true that for such a "high profile" movie its very strange to have such lackluster previews a few months from release. Just a bunch of quips and poses and some exploding gridlocked cars circa the 1995 Independence Day teaser. :monkey1

Kidpacks for everybody but myself, Carl and Mike. You'll also have to sit in the front row, well away from us. :lecture:lecture:lecture:exactly:

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

My bar for success for Thor was kind of low because I wasn't sure how it would translate into a live action movie. In the end it did better than I thought it would. I do think Chris Hemsworth was key to it being as successful as it was. I would think the role of Thor would be hard to do in a convincing manner and he seemed pretty committed to it.

:horror :horror :horror

How about TDKR, can I sit next to you then :lol

Not seeing TDKR in the theatres. I want to enjoy the film without the sound of wagging tongues and macaroni stirring and inhaling the putrid stench of stale bologna from the fapping fanboys. :google
