Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

If those rumored spoilers are true and all of that is really in the movie, then Whedon had better pull this off and not drop the ball. If not, he should just go right on ahead and retire from film directing.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

There's been some eyebrow raising choices for directors for all the recent Marvel films and each one hasn't disappointed. I don't think it'll happen here either. Particularly as all the previous films have built up to this one point...

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

Between this, Spidey and batman it will be a great summer for movies. I really have high hopes for this one as I wasn't at all disappointed with Thor, Cap, Iron Man and the hulk. I just sort of wish Norton was back as the hulk but I'm sure Ruffalo will be a great replacement.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

I don't know if anyone can clear this question up. Is it possible for the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to be in an Avengers sequel? I've heard their film rights weren't included in Fox's X-men package, but some argue they are. I remember some interview with Scarlett Johannson where she says Scarlet Witch was a character she had discussed with Feige before being cast as Black Widow. It seems they appeared in way more Avengers books than X-men.

They can't. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver specifically weren't named in Fox's licensing but their alter-egos of Wanda and Pietro Maximoff were under the guise of Magneto's children I believe which included Polaris as a potential cast member for a supposed X4 which would use "Magneto's Daughter" as a member as a way to create dramatic situation. Originally X-Men: Origins included a Magneto film, they were supposed to be involved in some aspect. The running gag is that Fox likes to flash a list of mutants that they own either by codename or alter-ego within their films. Most recently X-Men Origins: Wolverine (or X2, I forget which) which included the names of both of Magneto's children.

I believe the splitting hairs came into the thought that Marvel Studios if they wanted to use them it wouldn't be difficult to disassociate them from Magneto and use alias, hell even their powers could be explained via other aspect then mutations. I'm sure that even would bring a C&D and probably more trouble than it's worth. Both Scarlet Witch and Quiksilver in their histories and broken from Magneto ties and even come up with elaborate backstories to have they came to be leaving out him altogether, it wouldn't be difficult to just make one of those film canonical.

It is a little nervewracking.

The difference is that while the eyebrows have gone up, Whedon has done very little other then his own material and the scope of this film seems to be a little huge for someone of that caliber. Look at Martin Campbell who supposedly was lauded for helming Green Lantern, a film that on paper was about this large in scale and scope and it flopped hard because it felt disjointed and wasn't fully executed as it could have been. I think audiences have a right to be a bit nervous.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

I would think both Fox and Marvel studios would both benefit from some cross-pollination. It would help promote each other's films and make the fanboys happy. I imagine Fox would be less agreeable to that than Marvel Studios.
On the other hand maybe it is a blessing in disguise and keeps the films from getting too convoluted.

II'll show Marvel/Disney :tap

If Avengers suck i'm only going to watch it twice in the theater and buy only 1 Bluray DVD of it and still purchase the HT Avengers line up.

Go ahead, screw it up Marvel/Disney, i'll do what I just threatened.

I think it has about a 0.0001% chance of sucking. Honestly, Joss Whedon has NEVER let me down; and seeing as though he loves comics, I doubt it will NOT be awesome.

But like you said, even if it does suck, I'll still see it a few times :lol

Just waiting for the Superbowl trailer to confirm how awesome it will be

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

How many times has history shown that an awesome trailer does not always = awesome movie, though?

And while AVENGERS certainly has a lot going for it, I'm with Mike and others in being a tad skeptical regarding Whedon as a director of a film with this kind of scope. Because no matter how great the acting and how cool the dialogue is... if the favorite scenes in an AVENGERS movie are ones with characters sitting around talking that's going to be a problem. And the action scenes have to look and play like the big leagues, too. Marvel is notoriously cheap and Whedon has never directed a film that begs for huge, epic action set pieces like this one... so it's far from a sure thing. I'll be the happiest dude in town if Whedon pulls this off. But he'll have to show a dimension of his talents and directing ability that he hasn't shown before.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

Honestly, if the best scenes in the AVENGERS are the ones with the characters sitting around talking, I would have no problem with that.

My favorite part of Thor was the dialogue between Thor/Loki/Odin and my favorite part of Cap was the dialogue between Steve/Erskine...NOT the action

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

You know what I mean. Personally, I always prefer character-driven scenes over mindless action anyway. But this is THE AVENGERS, based on an ensemble comic book featuring a team of iconic super heroes saving the world time and again. If the scope doesn't have meat to it or if action isn't big or doesn't work, then it's a fail. I don't care how awesome the snark between characters will almost surely be. Whedon needs to reach into his magician's hat and pull out the big stuff.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

Iron Man 2 had great banter and totally pedestrian action which made for an utterly forgettable superhero movie. I certainly hope The Avengers doesn't follow in that vein.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

I liked iron man 2 a lot, just not as much as number 1....and I still bought the bluray and hot toys from it...

I'm with ya. But since it's Joss' work (and yes, you can call me a fangirl, and I will be till I die) I will buy 2 copies and see it 4 times in the theater.

I bought the Blu-Ray, HT figures, even Hasbro figures from it but that's because I'm an Iron Man fan and not because the film was good, Iron Man 2 was one of the weakest films in that genre considering it's original source and the fact that most of the original team was still intact.

The same reason that I have a Green Lantern film Power Battery, the Mattel figures, T-shirts, a custom film Ring and will buy the HT figures because I'm a fan of GL not because that film could be considered good. Fandom of the character still saves over the quality of the film, look at Spider-Man 3 merchandise or X-Men: Origins Wolverine figures where the films were duds and forgettable yet the character love is there.

Marvel has been working towards The Avengers since 2008. A project in the process for 5 years and given that Iron Man was in preproduction since 1997, who knows when the whole Avengers thing came to pass maybe longer.

That is a lot of pressure and a lot riding on this to work. The best scenes in the film CANNOT be them sitting around the Helicarrier teasing each other about shortcomings. This thing has to almost be Bay-like in it's over the top action mixed with the general Marvel humor or it'll be considered questionable. Not to mention with so many characters both hero and villain packed in, this is already heading into "trilogy" waters where it's previous examples are things like Batman & Robin (a fourth film in reality), Spider-Man 3 and X3 where it was so overloaded that the story suffered beyond repair.

There are a ton of red flags already up on this and if it works it'll really be something special and if it fails it'll be one for the record books but the merchandise? It'll sell without a doubt and people will buy it on DVD/Blu-Ray because comic fans are gluttons for punishment, why do you think people own copies of Ang Lee's Hulk, The Punisher, Fantastic Four or Daredevil? :lol.

Re: The Avengers: The Motion Picture Discussion Thread

If Avengers fails I'd almost rather it be "Batman & Robin" bad (which is actually quite hilarious in its awfulness and therefore kind of fun to watch) than "Iron Man 2" forgettable.

I think they'll play it safe enough to avoid being a laughingstock at the very least.
