Actually, there's been about 43% inflation from 1997 to 2012 in the US.

So unless you think 43% is 'not much', I would say your assessment is pretty wrong.

So, what you're saying is Avengers opening weekend of over 200 million crushed the pathetic Titanic opening weekend of 28 million, which adjusted by your figures would make it a what? 42 million opening weekend at modern day rates at best? :goodpost:

Irish or Jack Kirby? lol

Neither, but I'm also not going to whine 40 years later about a grown ass man not handling his finances. In other relevant news the Three Stooges died poor. Whoop De Doo!

Well, here's hoping you get taken to the cleaners too, so you can see what it's like from the perspective of the "whoop de doos." :nana:

Yeah, it's that simple. He just mishandled his finances. :lol Marvel & Stan Lee are not in the wrong at all, especially since most of this happened decades ago. Doesn't matter that they continue to cover their tracks and attempt to re-write history, either. Kirby was just a grown man who screwed himself. Got it.

Of course but I said the other two comic films. The Hobbit is not a comic film. If you want me to be specific on the issue I think The Hobbit will at worst make 2 billion world wide.

They might but I would side against it.

Oh I never suggested the Hobbit is a comic film :lol

$2Bn at worst - interesting, I think $1bn for sure, $2bn, we shall see.

I wasn't focused on the opening weekend. Sure Avengers has the biggest opening weekend of all time nominally, and on an adjusted basis, it's still probably pretty damn good.

I'm talking about final box office numbers.

Titanic made $658MM in the US on a nominal basis. The Avengers could surpass that in the US. However, that comparison would not be apple and apples.

The Titanic's $658MM is something like $1,075MM in today's dollars - that's the number Avengers has to beat domestically to beat Titanic on an apples to apples basis. I'm gonna say, it won't even get close.

And to go #1 US grossing film of all time, Avengers has to make over $1.6Bn to overtake Gone with the Wind.

Seriously, how hard would it be for a company who's making billions upon BILLIONS off of his creations to start giving proper credit in the comics and movies and agree to give the Kirby estate a one-time stipend?

I dare say it'd probably affect them less than it would for the average person who donates $1 to a Salvation Army Santa. They're just being ____s, hiding being corporate red tape and legal documents. And apparently some people have no problem with that, even on a moral/ethical level. That's scary.

void, right or wrong most people (including Hollywood) don't reference or care about the Adjusted numbers. You don't hear GWTW mentioned as the reigning box office champ. No, it's Avatar and before that Titanic and before that Star Wars, ET, etc

For better or worse, that's just the way it is.

It's scary but it doesn't surprise me in the least. The greed in this world can never be overestimated.

I was just speaking on the two comic films so I wanted to make sure.

Yeah, I think The Hobbit will really knock it out money wise. I do believe either the first part or the second part will knock Avatar off the top of the hill.

Seriously? Wow. I don't see it being quite that huge. We'll see.

Adjusted numbers are fun to talk about in the same way its fun to say if Babe Ruth played with today's smaller parks. I look at it like sports stats that you make what you make and if you get passed you get passed.

Yeah, I truly believe that. You have years of people waiting to see The Hobbit on screen and then you add the magic/wait after PJ LOTR Trilogy its gonna go nuts. I know for myself unless something just goes really wrong I will be seeing it at least a handful of times before it leaves the theater. Assuming its as good as I'm hoping I know many Tolkien fans will see it numerous times.

Oh I know it's the way it is - but I genuinely believe it's the wrong way to look at it, so I think it's worth pointing out in these discussions from time to time :lol

Same can be said for TDKR and the hordes of Nolancompoops :)lol). Unless something goes REALLY wrong, there will be loads of people who watch TDKR multiple times at the theater. The key for both Hobbit and TDKR will be what the general audience makes of it, and whether they feel the urge to see them over and over.

The Hobbit will probably be in the 300-400 million range. It's the same LOTR crowd that's gonna go see it and none of those topped 400 million alone. I don't see how the Hobbit will somehow DOUBLE that to dethrone Avatar.

Of course there will be people who see it multiple times but I do think there is differences still within that sect of each where it falls in favor of The Hobbit. Again, I agree but I don't think that falls in favor of TDKR to be honest. I do think not having someone die before it comes out will hurt it and the performance Ledger gave was fantastic. I don't expect that out of anyone this time. Also, I think a film like The Hobbit has a chance to resonate with the casual movie goer more so.

All that being said I'm going to see both and now that I've dragged this thread way off topic. :lol

Why Stark's mini chest reactor is not lit in some scenes and others it is.

Gone of the Wind made that kind of money because there was nothing else to spend money on.

No internet costs.
No cable tv costs.
No smart phone costs. .
No cell phones costs.
No home theater.
No HDTVs
No dvds.
No computers.
Little traveling over seas.

All you did back then was drink, have sex and go watch GOTW. :lol

When the Titanic numbers are compared to, does the recent 3D re-release get factored into its total numbers? I'm assuming yes, but wasn't positive.
