All right I'm probably behind the times on a number of things that have already been covered in this thread.

1. Did some prequel comic or something explain how Thor is suddenly able to freely visit Earth?

2. There was word of an extra scene being shot after the premier. Was it the
Thanos
epilogue?

1. Loki says something to the effect of, "How much dark magic (matter?) did Father have to use to send you here" in the movie.

2. No, the recently shot scene is at the very end of the credits and shows

the team enjoying some shawarma in a war-torn restaurant.

1. Loki said something about Odin using all his powers to send Thor back to Earth.

2. No, there's another one at the very end of the credits.

Uh..... they're all based off the Ultimates versions, bud. :lol
Not really. Obviously, there are many Ultimates influences (the most obvious probably being Fury). But the Thor Ultimates story was very different from the Marvel one at the outset (in the Ultimates everyone thought he was a nut job for the longest time, and his powers worked differently), and the movie story is straight up 616. Cap so far doesn't have any more Ultimates influence than 616 that I can see, apart from costume and him waking up in the current day instead of the 1960s. Iron Man was more influenced by the Extremis storyline than anything else, which was 616. Hulk is more 616 than Ultimates, as the Ultimates version killed people wantonly, even eating them sometimes. Hawkeye is the only guy who has two distinctly different characters in the comic-verse, where the 616 version is essentially ignored for the purpose of the film.

One thing that bugs me a slight bit about this film, though I doubt many others would really care, is the handling of Hawkeye.

One of the prevailing thoughts I had upon leaving the theater was, "man, sucks for Hawkeye fans." He gets subdued in the first five minutes while surrounded by tons of agents and then kills a bunch of good guys. Sure it wasn't his "fault" but still, some superhero, lol. Cap has no over-the-top powers and held strong BY HIMSELF against Loki for a good few rounds until IM showed up.

One other question. Have people been going off about the similarities between the finale to Avengers and Transformers 3? Both having aliens setting up a device on a skyscraper that shoots a beam into the sky to bring another civilization to enslave Earth? They even had similar mega-dropships.

But it doesn't matter as much if you think of Hawkeye as a government assassin. He kills people all the time with no remorse, anyway, he just so happens to kill some "good guys" as well as "bad guys." But if you went in thinking it was 616 Hawkeye, then yeah, it would be shocking and would probably haunt the guy for the rest of his life.

Thor's return will be addressed in detail in Thor 2. Though as others have mentioned, Loki eluded to it in their brief exchange before Iron Man interfered.

Aside from the wingless cowl Cap couldn't have been more farther removed from his lame-ass Ultimates incarnation.

:lecture:lecture:lecture Because Bucky was never a kid. :exactly:

Yeah, I must have missed the Loki comment. Are the "Ultimates" comics even still being produced or did those fizzle out some years back?

Uh, dude, Ultimates now has its own canon universe in Marvel with tons of different books. Marvel is basically split between the Ultimate Universe and 616 (classic). The Marvel produced movies have been decidedly adapted from the Ultimate Universe/status quo. Incidentally, it's the non-Marvel produced movies from Fox, Sony, etc that are more drawn from the classic comics.

Ok. Watched it Friday, it was entertaining but in the vein of a big video game. Like visual cocaine while you are watching it but instantly forgettable the second you leave the theatre.

Whendon needs to work on some new tricks. Completely the same formula. Hey it works some can see why he does it over and over. The movies are enjoyable by the masses and make a ton of money,

I'm not so easily swayed, this might have well been Star Trek.

Large cast of characters comes together for a visually stimulating thrill ride. The one liners keep a coming' which lets the audience know its ok to enjoy this cheesy sci fi / comic book flick. Many of the humor is lame but oh we'll it's a big silly geek movie so that's ok.

You have things blowing up, a few cute girls, things exploding oh and lest we forget an evil maniacal bad guy who just wants to take over the world, or blow it up or some other cliche uninspiring motive.

There is internal strife wirhin the group only to come together and prevail and set up the inevitable sequel. Oh and things explode.

The masses leave, moms and sons, young couples, groups of buddies, taking about how funny it was when hulk punched Thor. Then they get in their cars and drive to Applebee's go home and fall asleep to American idol.

Sometimes that's ok yes. Afterall this is the avengers a hodge podge movie that's only real set up was to be a huge box office success. With that in mind? It succeeded.

But a great film? Nope. Is that ok though? Maybe.

Loki asks Thor how much dark energy did he have to summon to get back to earth.

No, it was the Shawarma scene.

The biggest problem is that most of Marvel's current crop of writers have been producing junk for years now. The current Avengers vs X-Men (AvX) event is proof positive of this. It's horrible.

How is Captain America: The First Avenger adapted from The Ultimates? I read that first miniseries back in '02. Ultimates Cap was a jackass punk who never threw his shield. As I said I recognize that the uniform obviously took some cues from that series but what else?

The TFA story wasn't adapted from The Ultimates miniseries, but a lot of the stuff in the movie (especially visually, most notably Cap himself) comes from the Ultimate universe.

Of course, all the Fury/SHIELD stuff in these movies is right out of Ultimate universe and not very in line with 616 at all.

I'm happy for the film, but this still burns my ass:

$0.00 to the Kirby Estate.

You know, the guy who actually created 90% of the characters in the movie.

F you, Disney/Marvel. Seriously.

At the risk of provoking eye-rolling at the mention of a Captain America script treatment I created back in the 90's I nevertheless had a scene of present-day Cap visiting Bucky's grave and noticing the tombstone of someone named Jack Kirby. I had him pause and give a little nod before departing the cemetery.
