Yeah, but that's the point I'm trying to make. Just because I'm not fond and "don't get" the appeal of Blade Runner (well, I do know why people love it) doesn't mean I'll undermine it's significance or it's status. Let's remember though, Blade Runner is a cult film. It wasn't well received when it first came out, especially with that theatrical run.

I do love the look and feel (great cinematography) of Blade Runner but the characters and story do nothing for me. That's just me though, I know I'm in a minority. I hope I don't lose credibility for saying, "I don't really like Blade Runner".

Just the same, I bet all of us could find films that we love and share, like Star Wars. So, I don't know.

Batman '89 and Batman Returns are good movies. I loved them as a kid. I was never entirely fond of Jack's Joker though. Anyway, I love me some Batman Begins. :D

If I had a top 15 list many of these last 30 years or so films would not be up there...My top 4 films of all time are The Quite Man, The Searchers, The Wild Bunch, and The Shootist...What does that list tell you...Blade Runner, Blues Brothers would be in my top 15 list too...It's not about action and sci fi with me...more about memories, nostalgia and emotion I guess...It also shows that I'm not that young...LOL

Please don't do that anymore. I'm getting confused and upset that someone feels this way. It's like saying you don't like puppies, fresh air, sunshine, or love itself.

That's how I feel when people rip and say negative things about the movies I love.

Atleast we can agree that Terminator is goooooooooood ****. Though I always hated it when people would rip on T2 with Uncle Bob and his "swearing" and 0.0 casualties.

Yeah. . .**** T2

:peace :lol

I actually really like T2, but damn if it doesn't pale next to T1 in my mind. In fairness, they're really different genres of movies though, so it probably isn't appropriate to compare them at all.

T1 was phenomenal because it was totally unexpected...Arnold was crap until this film....I originally wasnt going to see it until word of mouth from friends...when I saw it I was blown away...It's great going to see a film that far exceeds what you expected...I believe that is a problem with many who go to the Theaters today...they go in with expectations high...and that's an easy way to get screwed and or dissappointed

Yeah, I'm with you there. But I thought we're listing summer/blockbuster movies, most of which are action and sci-fi. I thought the thread changed focus to blockbusters from the last 30+ years or so.

We're not listing BEST FILMS EVER here. If we were the lists and classics would be different, at least mine would be.

I'd include things like Cool Hand Luke, Planet of the Apes, Psycho, a ton of films far removed from what we're listing now (which is mostly films from the late 70s and 80s).

yup.......

for me one of the best film years was 82...I liked 85 and 87 too....82 stands out the most for me with sci fi action

Looking back into the 80s...there is a lot of Sci/fi horror garbage I remember seeing...Cult classics they are called nowadays...Many I will never or want to ever see again

The films didn't change. What happened in 1978 or 1989 didn't change. Cinema, people and time is what changed..

You really should let this notion go as I've seen you post it more than once.

There *are* timeless classics and Batman isn't one of them. Star Wars is. The Wizard of Oz is. Beauty and the Beast, released two short years after Batman and one year prior to BR was just re-released last year and made an *additional* 47 million at the box office! Titanic made another 50 million this year, and The Lion King hauled in a whopping 94 MILLION dollars on its re-release. More than the majority of movies that are *brand new.*

You think if Batman was released again it would make another 50 or 100 million? No way. But Superman might not either. But at least filmmakers still reference Superman as the template to the ideal superhero movie. Not Batman.

Tell me one thing aside from its marketing that had a lasting impact? Yes the batsuits set a trend that all further Batman films followed. Did it give us the ultimate Bruce Wayne? No. Action scenes like those from Terminator 2 that still stand up today? No. Iconic dialogue? I'll give you "I'm Batman" and "Where does he get those wonderful toys." But really a couple lines and some cool designs? Seriously that's pretty much it. I remember thinking that both The Crow and Dark City seemed kind of "Batman-ish" but those were lesser movies and both by the same director.

Yep. And I'm certainly not the only one who thinks so.

rottentomatoes.com:

Batman (1989) - 71%
Thor (2011) - 77%

:wave

:lol

OH WOW, ROTTENTOMATOES.

I love Thor, but look at that. You're using that as a scale of greatness?

Batman came out in '89 it has a whopping . . . . 55 reviews!

Thor came out last year and has . . . . 253 reviews.

Yeah, not sure if that's too reliable. :lol

That's like saying the Terminator is "THE BEST FILM EVER" because it is 100% positive. Well yeah, but it also came out in 1984 but it has what, 44 reviews total?

Oh the Internet.

I dunno if I agree on those. Star Wars is pretty uniformly accepted as the definition of a classic film. Terminator had a period vibe from the '80s, but was a movie that just worked on nearly every level as intended. If Terminator was released today, even with those special effects, I think it would be a huge success because it hits on universal ideas, has great dramatic performances, creates tension in all the right ways, isn't overly cheesy or melodramatic, etc. Same goes for Star Wars, or Alien, or Blade Runner. Superman and '89 Batman just don't fare as well when viewed purely as a film, and not as historically important phenomena.

Yep. The Terminator and Aliens might not be megablockbusters if released today but I could see them being Cloverfield-type sleepers that still pull audiences in despite a lack of state of the art effects.

I'm starting with '75... Because I'm old.

75: Jaws*

76: Rocky*

77: Star Wars*, Close Encounters of the Third Kind*

78: Superman: The Movie*, Grease

11: Rise of The Planet of The Apes, Captain America: The First Avenger, Super 8, X-Men: First Class

12: The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Campaign

That is my list. Those with * are ones I feel are absolutely among the top "classic" genre movies ever made, certainly in my lifetime.

I learned a couple of things doing this... not so many * in recent years. And 1987 is an unsung year of kick assdom.

And Khev, THOR was marginally better than GREEN LANTERN. :wave I actually dig both of them, but neither is all that great.
