Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

I did. The Apple store opened at 9 today so I got there about quarter to 8. They had quite a line, but luckily I was one of the first peeps there so I was one of the first to get one that didn't have it on preorder.
~~I've been playing with it for about 30 minutes so far and love it. Very, very fast in comparison to the OS on the iphone and the revised applications are incredible in comparison to before. iBooks is awesome, and I see it catching on really quickly. I've already downloaded 10 of the free classic books that they have in the store and purchased "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" for $10.

What do the books look like? Are they backlit or easy on the eyes like the E readers?

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

I thought there would be more excitement for this on the boards. Guess no one but wook got one today?

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

I plan to get one, but it doesn't work to get it right now, and since it's not a need now item and it'll be around indefinitely, there's no rush. Plus I figure, if for some reason there are any problems with it, by the time I get around to picking it up that'll all be known.

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

Smart man. Yes, no reason for me to get one now, but I don't judge anyone who does. I can see the appeal (and going by many critical reviews from tech websites and publications, there are many who see the same appeal).

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

Played with one today. Pretty sweet. Good alternative for a laptop...kinda.

Dont want one yet. It'll probably be all buggy, and a better version will come out down the road regardless.

If it worked to do this now, I'd have probably jumped on it, but thankfully, stuff like this isn't like collectibles where it's limited and you have certain windows to get in, so for me that bumps it to picking it up when it works, unless I need it, which I don't.

Hard to compare because I haven't had a whole lot if time with the Kindle, but the iBook pages are nice and bright and pop out like you're reading real pages from a physical book. I love how you can change the size of the font as well as selecting from a couple different fonts (Times, Verdana, and a couple others.) Also, when you use the bookmark feature it appears like you used a highlighter on the selected spot. It's also great that you can change the brightness to suit your environment you're reading in. The different layout features are also really nice so you can rotate it to view one page or two pages based on the layout the iPad is positioned in.

I really recommend going to an Apple store and playing with one for yourself. Even if you don't plan in purchasing one, it's a real cool device to play with.

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

I got mine today. I've been playing with it all day. Love it so far. The pages are bright and clear and crisp. The apps are fantastic.
Makes the web fun.
What can I say, life is good. :)

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

I'm passing on this for now. With the iPhone "HD" set to be released in June I'd rather go that route especially if even half the rumors are true and wait for the 2G iPad that is sure to be hitting by next summer...

Ah Mike you always wait for the good stuff!
I'm just going to give the first to the kids when the second gen comes out. Well worth a try!

I tell you, IM comics never looked so good!

In my opinion it's an oversized Iphone, but without the phone part of it. OK an oversized Ipod Touch. But I have to say it is always cool to have a new gadget. I wonder how long till the newness fades away for it though.

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

Is anyone planning on using this as a home theater or a/v remote?

Can an iPod touch handle word processing with Pages, or even Keynote? Didn't think so. How about 3D applications like "The Elements?" Guess not. Buy the way, that App is worth the price and I predict a lot of education Apps like this in the future.

Its the main reason i'll be buying one when its released, hopefully the Marvel Comic reader will be hacked by then to allow you to view your own files and then i'll be more than happy.

The micro sim is a complete rip off by apple to stop you using your normal sim in it so hopefully someone will bring out an adapter to get round it.

Re: The Apple Tablet "The iPad"

So are you guys finding the text hard to read with the iBook app during the day? I read somewhere that the glare is bothersome, and the text appears bleached out.

My hacked iphone can handle word processing using Quickoffice, you should give it a try. As for keynote, why would you want to program on anything but a desktop with lots of processing power? THe ARM Cortex A8 chip in the Ipad is more powerful than the Snapdragon QSD8250. which equates to about a 37.6% performance advantage over the Qualcomm QSD8250 (smartphone chip power). But that technology is aging and will be replaced as well with something faster within the next few months. I agree the Ipad is a great device, and it's advantage is not in power but in all the apps it will be able to run and its stability. However I doubt many programmers will be using it to program anything other than to test app's that they create on a desktop. The 3D capabilities are still nowhere near good enough to be put up against any low end desktop 3D video card worth $30 bucks or any Mac laptop. But for what its worth, I probably will end up getting one just to use as a remote for my PS3 in the theater room. And perhaps use it to browse the internet if I get bored watching TV or a movie. lol.. Making it a novelty device at this point..
