Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Every time I see a cg effect that could have easily been done for real I just think it's ****ing lazy and insulting to a paying audience. It's just so easy to tell these days what is digital in nearly every shot. Used in moderation to enhance a practical element is the way to go.

Shame they had to let Del Toro go, his practical creature designs and effects are amazing.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm hoping for the best- seeing it in Imax 3D HFR......
the trailers have looked terrible ..just lackluster and slow. I do know the entire film will not be that way...just the first hour!

Jackson's LOTR trilogy was the best thing since the original Star Wars trilogy...and I put Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy up there, as well.

I beg to differ. Take a look at Life of Pi and tell me you don't think that is a real tiger?

Close ups can look stunning it's when things start moving too unnaturally fast with that 'weightless' quality that breaks the illusion.

To this day I still think the best use of cg is the rex breakout in Jurassic park, granted it's a lot easier to mask it in night scenes but the mix of the effects in that sequence just blend together so well.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Nothing in this should look as bad as CGI Legolas in the TT on the Oliphant ETC.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

The battle did look a little funky a moment or two. However, I did like the look of the wargs though.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Yes ROTK i stand corrected. There was some shoddy Legolas CGI in TT as well i believe.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Why would some orcs be CGI in this one? Are they larger than human size? if not, that makes no sense. The orc makeup was awesome in the lotr trilogy

Almost all the Orcs are CGI...only Bolg I could tell was not I think

Actually, there are lots of CGI orcs in Lord of the Rings as well. I think if you watch it and really watch for that you'd be surprised. So there should be no shock that they would do the same in The Hobbit. Watch any of the clips from Goblin town there is no way they could do normal stuff for that. I agree as a whole the orc makeup was cool but there are a few that are not quite so much.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I don't remember seeing any CGI orcs/uruk hai in LotR unless we're talking about an army or something. Nor did I think any of the makeup looked bad.

Since they released the second official trailer (for The Hobbit) my biggest fear has been the overuse and fakeness of CGI. Some scenes in the trailer were pretty bad. ie wargs, hedgehog, goblins/orcs, etc..

OMG, cgi was used in a movie with mountains throwing rocks at each other, can't be, ohhh nooooz!

i hope cgi isn't used for the BIG superman vs Zod battles in MOS, I hope they just push each other back and forth in a playground like old school fighting.

Pretty much. :lol CGI was used in LOTR so as I said people being surprised is kind of like did we not watch the same movie.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread
