Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I care very much about Rotten Tomatoes. I'd like to know which films, not on my radar, are worth my time and money.

That's why a critic exists. Now, you can say "OK, I missed this in the theater, and now I can watch it for free. Oh wow, that was a great film. But so glad I didn't pay for it.".

Many people on Rotten Tomatoes rate movies long before they even come out. They can rate a movie low simply because they don't like the main actor, the director or because it's a remake, etc. I've seen it many times. They also almost automatically rate a Disney movie high long before release as well. I just don't take it seriously anymore.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

All movies suck and lack originality now a days. That's just how it is.

SEEN ONE, SEEN EM ALL. ONE BORROWS FROM THIS, THE OTHER FROM THAT. SEQUEL, REBOOT, REHASH, PREQUEL, REPEAT. DONE AND DONE.

Reviewers have nothing better to do. Nerds have nothing better to do. None of it matters.

Just show me Riddles in the Dark, Smaug, Gollum, Bilbo, Gandalf the Grey and Thorin and I'll be a happy man.

That's no shock you care about RT. :lol

Struck a nerve did I :lol

I'm just tempering my expectations.

People give a rat's ass about RT when it serves their purpose, and they don't when it doesn't. Just like any other rating site.

Nope, not really. :lol

I can't imagine you have very high expectations at all.

I never care about RT. Most people I know don't either there are people out that put some kind of silly weight in what some film critic says. The critics I care about are fellow fans whose opinions I respect that will be fair.

I guess.

My woman, 10 year old daughter and i are all looking forward to it. They're they ones that are super excited, while i read all the reviews negative and positive. :lol

Dwalin looks total Alpha BTW!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Dwalin really looks cool. The scars, that tattoos, he looks like one mean Dwarf.

On the bright side, even if this movie does suck or doesn't live up to what people have in mind . . . there are still two more films which I'm sure will be full of surprises and entertainment. It ain't over yet.

That's one of the reasons. Also, a lot of their "top" critics tend to come across as total *******s to be honest. The site is a total joke IMO always.

The thing I keep seeing being held against the actual movie is the 48 fps. I may hate the tech when I see it Saturday but don't hold that against the movie. The other thing I've seen from critics and some none critics that have seen it is bloat. From what I can gather is these are people who are of the mindset that The Hobbit is a 300 page book how can it be 3 movies. They don't seem to get material was added from the appendices, more depth added to just sequences from the book, etc. I think as a whole most regular movie goers will be ok and people who enjoy Tolkien as a whole will be very happy (based on people I know who have seen it).

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Personally i give all of the 3 LOTR movies a 9.5/10. I expect to give this one from what i know and heard a 8.0 to 8.5/9. (but who knows) I've never expected this to be on par with LOTR. (I re-read Hobbit twice in 2008, and i just want to see this bad)

You haven't read it since 2008? Come on man. Fail :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I have one gripe going in and it ain't about story length or 48 fps.

It's about the prosthetic monsters/villains.

Lurtz, Gothmog, Orcs, Uruk-Hai, Shagrat, Ugluk, Grishnákh, Snaga, the orc Lt. etc. were all fantastic. To see Jackson downplaying and criticizing prosthetic and make up work as inferior compared to CGI is a little disheartening.

I just saw all three films on the big screen, and those monsters are great, all of them. They're all superb characters with unique qualities, from the accents to the movement. I like how the Moria Goblins were like insects, I liked how the Uruk Hai were strong and monstrous, that scene outside of Isengard, "looks like meat's back on the menu boys" was fantastic.

Now all of that, or most of that quality is gone. I just don't understand it.

I straight up hate those Goblins too and those are the main enemies in this one. It's sort of upsetting.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I accept that I don't care what 99.99% of them have to say. :lol

So why are you even here? If you don't care what people have to say....and don't say you don't care about the critics who understand film, but rather care about people who don't. :lol

Opinions equal discussion. They don't equal fact.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I consider myself neutral on the whole Middle Earth / Tolkien fandom (Reading the books, I enjoyed The Hobbit more than the LOTR trilogy, BTW), but observing the discussion before this movie comes out...it just seems like damage control.

Yeah, you'll probably be thrilled once you see The Unexpected Journey and it's sequels, but I'm curious that when it is all said and done, how you will look back on these new movies once the new-ness wears off.

That's not how Rotten Tomatoes works.

They take all the reviews and score them up, and then average the total.

That's it. Now, they do have an audience meter, but that **** is worthless because most people are dumb, and rate with their heart, not with anything thing else.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Never read one review for LOTR in 2001 (internet just wasn't big then) I can only imagine if it came out now, it would be titled as long, unnecessary long dribble, pacing problems, and while a very good time and epic in parts, just isn't true to Tolkein and not for casual movie-goers.

:)

Nah, not true. The original trilogy was epic, and got the critical acclaim it deserved.

Nope, not really. :lol

.

Well the original trilogy is amongst my favourite films of all time (rate them all at least 9/10). Based on what I know about The Hobbit and the reviews i've read, i'm not going in expecting this to sit alongside those in terms of quality, but i'm expecting to be thoroughly entertained. So anywhere from 7-8.5/10. That's my expectation. Maybe it beats my expectation, we'll see.

Yeah practical fx > CGI (at least today's technology), any day.

Weren't you still sucking on your mom's titty back then? :)

Yeah, it got it's acclaim. But i'm talking internet, and i bet it would still get manhandled in 2012 and STILL get it's Oscars.

(The internetwebz gonna internetz)
