Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

My biggest fear going in was emotional impact from a journey coming to an end.

I guess I won't know until the 3rd Hobbit to see if it has the same impact that the end of ROTK did on me.

By the end of ROTK, I was balling. :lol

Book spoiler
Kili....waaaaaaaa!

Book Spoiler
yes, both pretty boys and Thorin.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Well, I didn't buy that this takes place a few hours/minutes before the Fellowship of the Ring with Frodo reading his book simply because Elijah Wood and Ian Holm look a decade older (duh). Ian Holm doesn't even sound the same.

There's also the fact that we see Bilbo find the one ring in the prologue in LOTR in a much different way and it's none other than Ian Holm.

But that's not a fault, hardly, these Hobbit films are their own thing, it's impossible for it to connect up 100% to LOTR which was filmed over a decade ago. It's a nice idea and I got chills seeing all the little connections. I'm just glad there's nothing in the Hobbit that has contradicted what happens in LOTR, like a certain prequel trilogy I loathe. Oh, and I don't know about anyone else but I love the little panning shot of the Bag End interior where they show Bilbo's study where either Bilbo (Hobbit, Fellowship) or Frodo (Return of the King) are writing their stories. It's brilliant.

And man, that Riddles in the Dark scene. The emotion on Gollum/Smeagol's face, the audiences reaction and laughter, it was a great experience. I could feel the excitement in the theater when Gollum appeared and the riddles were done wonderfully. That had to be the best CGI character I've ever seen. Gollum made up for the crappy Radahgast animals, goblins and orcs.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

First I want to say that I'm a huge LOTR fan. The EE versions are the only way for me to watch those, and I watch them at least once a year if not more. That being said, this one was far from blowing me away. I was bored through most of it and I didn't care if it ended. Couldn't wait until it ended actually. The first hour and a half bored the life out of me. I knew it would be slow but this was tedious. FOTR started slow but it made me want to see more. Not the case here. The trolls for some reason with their slapstick made me think I was watching a Star Wars prequel with Jar Jar, as well as the Goblin King "that'll do it" scene. I did like the white Orc scenes and I can see that the 2nd and 3rd movies will probably be way better with the way it was shaping up at the end. Hopefully they will be better than this one.

EDIT: LOVED the Gollum scenes as well.

I don't get the hate for Radagast. He was no worse then any LOTR character. :dunno. Just some dumb wizard.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

'Men, who above all things desire power.'

That men are more susceptible to the ring is made clear in both the book and the movie. So for a man to turn down the ring is especially admirable and different than Gandalf turning it down.

I know he doesn't say it in the movie. I'm wondering if he will say it in the EE. TV spots don't cover stuff from the EEs do they?

Yes, I know the quote. I've seen the movies and read the books (just a few times :lol). Have I made that clear enough yet for you? You're not talking to a noob who doesn't know anything. I've studied a pretty fair amount of Tolkien over the last 11 years. I understand that men being brought under the rings power easier than others is different. However, for the GA it's just the simple how powerful is it if everyone keeps turning it down.

Sometimes they do. There are a few scenes already in the tv spots or trailers that didn't make the movie. So those could be in the EE. It just kind of depends on what's been cut and why.

Earlier in this thread I predicted that at some point PJ will edit the prologue to have the Martin Freeman performance there. I have always known that it would literately be the only continuity error between the two stories.

If PJ does it, it has my blessing.

I don't remember Theoden cruising on a bunny sled or Gimli having bird **** in his hair. Gandalf and Saruman are enough for me.

Though, I gotta be honest. I loled with the audience when Radagast takes a hit off of Gandalf's pipe of old toby and when Saruman mentions the "mushroom" bit. That was great. :lol

That whole segment was easily my least favorite part of the film. Seeing Frodo in The Hobbit just felt wrong, and poor old Ian Holm, he looked and sounded so tired. Even Christopher Lee seemed in better health. I assume there's going to be wraparound segment at the the end of the third movie that'll lead right into the beginning of FOTR, but I could've done without that whole bit, it all felt so unnecessary.

The Hobbit isn't for some. It being a simpler story just won't settle with some that like the little faster more mature nature of Lord of the Rings.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I went in to The Hobbit expecting to be totally let down after all the negativity coming out of the critics' mouths. However I was pleasantly surprised that I really loved the film and cannot wait to see it again in the high frame rate (saw it first in IMAX 3D so my friends and I could take in the Star Trek preview which was well worth the price of admission alone). And to be honest, The Hobbit moved quite well. I didn't feel let down by its pacing or anything. Those three hours though are filled with everything and the kitchen sink. Did it need to be really that long? No but what the Hell. It was pretty damn great all in all and will get my ass back in the theatre for The Desolation of Smaug next Christmas.

I don't know if there will be. I kind of doubt it to be honest but I didn't have a problem with the film starting the way it did.

Yep, same here. It was nice seeing the characters again, and it's a clever idea but Ian Holm and Elijah Wood don't really sell it in that it doesn't feel timeless, or in LOTR's continuity.

But it was great seeing them again and the book, and Bag End. I think they could have gotten away with just having young Bilbo narrate though, maybe telling the story to Shire children like he did at his party in Fellowship of the Ring?

I really love how they kept the tradition of intros too with "The Hobbit" appearing on the screen from the black and then "An Unexpected Journey" right before we see young Bilbo. It really took me back.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Just got back from it. Fantastic film. Despite my initial disappointment with a more CG approach to the goblins and what have you, I was quickly swayed. They were animated very well and didn't have that floaty CG feel. I even had trouble telling if some were CG, practical or CG enhanced. Bravo.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

If you get a chance to read the Weta art book they changed a lot of them to practical during the process of the film. So there may just be more of that them than people are expecting.

Cool, I'll check it out :duff

I think I'm gonna see this movie again tomorrow. So good.

The score...oh the score :blissy

Ditto.

After have a some time to process the film - watched in 2D and preferred.

Absolutely loved it even the length. Going to Middle Earth never gets old. Disappointments for me are the CG...only because I've never been a fan of it in film.

The pale orc could have easily been a portrayed with real presence. The scale would have fit for dwarfs since he is meant to be "larger"

Now to plan my next time to see it again. A lot of stuff happened that I can't even begin to recall.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I just want to add that I don't see the problem with some of the music being reused. The elves have their music, the hobbits their's. It was nice to hear it when they were showed.

:exactly:
Agreed. So grateful that parts of the original scores were reused to bring us back to the Shire and the Ring.

I could never have a problem with reusing the old score. It just helped blend the movies together with the LOTR trilogy. It's like not using Stars Wars music in a Star Wars movie...

Whenever the LOTR theme first played I got chills. It immediately transported me back to ME.
