Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Man can't wait to see the next two. I bet they're going to mirror a bit how Bilbo has changed after his "adventure"(In there and back again) kinda like how Frodo was at the end of ROTK.

Good times, great beginning. Bring on the EE.

Im re-reading the Hobbit now since my viewing. Really excited to see the next film!
Mirkwood! The Spiders! The Elves! Laketown! Smaug!

This one didnt give me that sense of "NO IT CANT END HERE!!!" moment like Fellowship did for me.

Riddles in the Dark is by far my favorite scene in the film though.

I think I place this somewhere between Fellowship and Return of the King for my favorites.

FOTR/AUJ
ROTK
TT.

As far as the order in which Id rate these. Fellowship of the Ring is up there in the top 5 favorite films of all time for me next to Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Dark Knight and Terminator 2. So its really hard for AUJ to bump that one for me.

But I am SUPER stoked for the next films. For someone who has read the book, there is still so much more greatness ahead!

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Therein lies the problem. Most people who will watch The Hobbit wouldn't have read the books.

The film is not made with a pre-supposition or pre-requisite for people to have read the books. Neither were the original films - yet the response to those was overwhelming positive all around.

Therefore, the films must be judged on their own. And on it's own, I found the film to be at least 20-25 mins too long - I didn't have this problem with ANY of the original films. But I still enjoyed Hobbit a lot. Just not as much as any of the original 3.

I'm sure if/when I eventually read the books, i'd appreciate the extra runtime more, but that's not the point.

Well, that's the problem for those that haven't read things. Honestly, reading the books just gives you an appreciation for how well Jackson adapted it. There is no drag and to be honest for some you it would no longer be The Hobbit if you start cutting that much time out. Fans who know the world would want Jackson strung up. Also as someone said its getting an A raising from cinema score so folks are appreciating it. From listening in to people I've seen it with I can confirm that.

As I've said I think it might drag for people like you and Carl because of you guys expecting it to be Lord of the Rings redo. That's simple because you don't know the material.

Dude, why you gotta make this personal?

BTW, I've read the Hobbit. Of course, it was when I was in Middle School. Which means I probably read it before you could even read. :nana: I read LOTR when I was in 9th grade. Yes, that was a lifetime ago.

Seriously, though, stop this "You just have problems with the movie because you don't know Middle Earth like I do" stuff. It's not becoming, sir.

For the record, I have no problem with you loving this movie. That's actually cool. Just don't so easily dismiss other opinions, even those of us who like, but don't love, it.

Since the movie has a CinemaScore of an "A" it seems most of the world does appreciate it as is, even without having read all that. ;)

Yeah, I saw that. Good sign people are appreciating The Hobbit for its differences.

:goodpost:

This is a movie made for the masses, not for a niche community of Tolkien uber fans.

I wasn't expecting a LOTR redux. So you can't pin my issues to simple generalizations like that.

Watching a good/great film is personal...If there is nothing personal I could relate to then it becomes a study...

That's not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about getting personally offended when other people have a differing opinion, and then taking it out on them individually.

No making it personal. Just using examples.

Congrats you read the books. Seeing as how you're older than dirt now :lol I doubt you recall much.

I don't care if its becoming. I'm simply laying out some will might not know what to expect going in. It's a fact and the truth. If that bothers some that's on them not me.

Yes, I like the movie and am glad you approve. If others don't great but I will post why it appears some dont. If that bothers some that's on them not on me.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I'm really interested in seeing this in 48 fps just to judge the overall experience although whilst I enjoy them IMAX and in particular IMAX 3D tend to make me feel dizzy as it is. Either way I think this is a movie I'll have to see at the cinema.

Anybody preferred this movie to any of the Lord of the Rings ?.
I've not watched them for years , waiting for a price drop on the extended edition blu rays.

The movie drags for a lot of people. If the people that think it doesn't drag have a problem with it, that's on them. :lol

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

You can't really compare The Hobbit to the Lord of the Rings. It isn't a fair comparision. The Hobbit was written for Tolkien's children and was written in a family friendly and whimsical manner. Lord of the Rings was targetting the more adult oriented market.

I'm not personally offended and I'm not taking it out. Personally what some of you think doesn't truly come into play for me at all. So you're more than welcomed to feel as you want and I won't even blink as to how I feel.

The movie drags for a lot of people. If the people that think it doesn't drag have a problem with it, that's on them. :lol

I'm sure it does for some folks. Good for them. :wave

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

This film really reminded me of Michael Cimino's works...A party in the beginning then .....

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

I will see this one more time too....

Re: The Official "The Hobbit" movie thread

Jackson could have chopped out around 10-15 minutes from the first 30 and it would have been fine.

The problem is you lose the great prologue of Dale/Erebor. So you'd have to take out then the Frodo/Bilbo part. You really can't take out the Dwarvish intros as that's a major part of the first part of the book.
