Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Also, I don't see how they can make Gollum look like an actual living being whereas Azog, the eagles, worgs and trolls are so obviously CGI. Not necessarily bad CGI, but just clearly CGI. I wish they would have stuck to the makeup/suit Azog design.

They had a lot more time to develop Gollum's CG. The choice to make Azog a CG character was decided somewhat late in the game, so they didn't have as much time to refine it.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Watched it for the first time tonight and loved it. I have no complaints really. CG looks fake, but it always does. As long as the cg looks cool, I dint mind and I thought the cg in this movie had a lot of character. I d agree that a guy in a suit would've been better for the Orc parts, but what cAn you do. Hollywood loves them some cg.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

does the standard Hobbit bluray dvd combo play in the high framerate like it did in theaters?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

No its the standard 24fps.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

thanks josh...are there any blu rays out yet with the high framerate?

No problem. As Khev said not at this time. I'm not sure if the BR players are ready to handle that just yet. I know you can tweak the TVs to it but I don't know if enough of them can be honestly.

Yeah a lot of the new samsungs have that mode automaticlly turned on right out of the box. Personally I think it looks like ****.

I know our Samsung has it but not sure how prevalent it is with others. I saw it in the HFR once and honestly liked it. Still prefer the 24 fps but I will see the other two once in the new frame rate.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I was disappointed with the film the first time I saw it, but still really enjoyed it. But now after seeing it again, to be honest, It's not holding up for me. I don't know exactly what it is. At first I thought it was the light-hearted tone but now I'm not sure.

I get the feeling that the movie doesn't know exactly what it's trying to be. It doesn't feel "complete". The style is just..all over the place if that makes sense. Idunno :lol

I'm looking forward to seeing Smaug's full-body design though. I've always been fascinated with dragons and it seems that they're going with that "classic" dragon look for Smaug so that's exciting. Anxious to hear Cumberbatch voice him as well. Perfect choice IMO.

You didn't like the best part of the movie.... :lol

I liked the movie but I agree that "the movie doesn't know exactly what it's trying to be"
But I don't hold it against it since we have 2 more. I think once the whole trilogy is out and you can watch them one after the other the first one will feel better.

Gollum's expressions when he's trying to figure out Bilbo's riddles are priceless.

lol found it

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I would like to know why PJ and his team decided to reveal "The Ring" to the viewers different from that of the prologue from LOTR. I was hoping that when this scene was reveals PJ would try to match the footage from LOTR as seamless as possible (ie. Camera angles). Basically telling the audience "Yes we thought about this".

I know people can argue the LOTR prologue was narrated from Galadriel and her point of view. But personally I think that is too artistic. Does anyone know if there is comments from PJ on this?

I love the Hobbit but I think that small little scene would have been over the top brilliant!!

Took me two days to get it out of my TV's system. And it's STILL isn't perfect.

Who the hell likes that crap? It makes TV seem more real? Why?

I noticed the discrepancy in how those scenes played out as well. Can anyone confirm whether the three trolls turned to stone in the same poses with which they appeared in FOTR?

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I watched Skyfall on a TV with the motion stabilizer cranked up. It made a lot of the action seems look super fake.

Someone here posted a screen capture from FotR and it looked pretty spot on.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I did notice one of the trolls fingers in LOTR pointing down and it was there in The Hobbit!! The Hobbit even had small details like Frodo putting up the "No Admittance" sign on the front gate. (As seen in the FOTR).

I just can't understand why Bilbo finding the ring was so different. It just a "missed opportunity" for a "WOW" factor for old and future new audiences!!
And with the same director at the helm makes you think why?

I can't find a screen grab from The Hobbit, but from memory it looks pretty spot on.

I wonder if PJ decided it'd be too much work to meticulously match those scenes for too little of a return since it wouldn't sync up perfectly anyway on account of two different actors being depicted in the exact same moment in time.

Or maybe it was an "actor respect" thing. Let Holm have his take and then Freeman his own.
