Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Yes the Trolls are the same, i can tell just by looking at my weta stone trolls.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I just can't understand why Bilbo finding the ring was so different. It just a "missed opportunity" for a "WOW" factor for old and future new audiences!!
And with the same director at the helm makes you think why?

They had a short few second in The Fellowship of the Ring and had much longer in The Hobbit: AUJ. That I'm sure is the main reason. Maybe this will make you feel better how Bilbo says things happen in the book and how they actually went down are different. It's not until afterwards that he is open about it. Both versions I believe get written down in The Red Book. So consider what we saw in FOTR the initial telling and what we see in AUJ the later honest version.

All I can say is that it would have been neat if some of it had been done the same, but knowing that two versions of the story have been told its no big deal.

I noticed the discrepancy in how those scenes played out as well. Can anyone confirm whether the three trolls turned to stone in the same poses with which they appeared in FOTR?

They're the same. That was one thing I watched for when I saw the film the first time. If there are any differences they're very minute.

After getting reamed on price for the WalMart SE, it was nice to see Target selling the Lego edition cheap.

Gonna get my 3rd viewing on tonight. :clap

Doesnt Dwalin kill Bolg outside of Moria?....It's the same guy who's photo we have seen so many times as Bolg with that big spine club

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

It's Bolg but the million dollar question is did Dwalin kill him.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

It does but I don't think he did. I expect to see him.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

I wonder if PJ decided it'd be too much work to meticulously match those scenes for too little of a return since it wouldn't sync up perfectly anyway on account of two different actors being depicted in the exact same moment in time.

Or maybe it was an "actor respect" thing. Let Holm have his take and then Freeman his own.

What I tell myself is that the LOTR version is how Frodo imagined the scene as Bilbo told it and the Hobbit version is the actual event.

Actually it was Galadriel who narrated that sequence but your point still stands, it was obviously a place holder image until we could see how it *really* played out. ;)

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Is it at all possible that gollum will be in the next two films. I know in the book that was it, but will PJ add in some more scenes with him?? Or is serkis off the casting list for the next too films??

I do have a question about the ring? How does Bilbo keep it hidden from gandolf?? I assume he will use it more in the next two films, its just seems strange that none of the dwarfs or gandolf would see him use it.

Its not until fellowship that gandolf finds out about it. You would think he would have sensed its presence or seen Bilbo use it.

Basically the way it worked within the books is Bilbo originally tells it one way. He wins the ring from Gollum and Gollum helps him out, but later the real story comes out which is what you see in the Hobbit.

You may see Gollum at the end of movie three leaving the mountain to start looking for Bilbo. That would be it I'd think though.

They all learn Bilbo has the ring but they just think its a magic ring. Nothing more. Nothing less. It's not until during the events of The Lord of the Rings they learn its The One Ring.

Thanks for feedback. As a follow up question why don't the wraiths see him or that necromancer dude when he puts on the ring?? Every time frodo put it on he was seen by the wraiths. I realize the eye isn't around but they established the wraiths with the sword and necromancer (radagast side story) so I thought using the ring would atleast alert trigger a response from that dark magic.

Maybe that will be shown in the next movies. Also when gollum loses the game he goes to look for the ring. You can infer he was probably planning on using it at that moment to ambush Bilbo and not honor his bargain.

I guess I am confused on what triggers the ring when frodo puts it on and not before when gollum and Bilbo use it.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

No problem. I could talk about this all day. Well, the wraiths aren't technically around yet because Sauron hasn't awoken them. The Necromancer is Sauron by the way (incase you are curious about that). The reason Bilbo isn't seen and the reason Frodo is due to Ring not looking for its master or looking for its master. When Sauron begins actually looking for it the ring begins to want to get back. During the time of The Hobbit they're both still kind of dormat in that regard.

You are correct that he was looking for the ring to kill Bilbo.

Ya I figured the necromancer was Sauron that's why I was confused at to why he didn't look for ring when Bilbo or gollem used it. They even showed that wraith attack rastagast and proof of the existence of the wraiths with the nazgul blade gandolf had which is very similar to the one frodo is stabbed with.

Got ya. Figured I'd pass that on just in case. Like I said its because as of this point Sauron isn't openly looking for it. The Radagast sequence is movie only.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

No other film maker in the history of cinema has been able to accomplish what PJ has done with these 4 movies.

What other director created a quadrilogy masterpiece using the same characters/story?

Not Spielberg, Nolan, Leone, Lucas, Coppola, Kubrick, Hitchcock, Scorsese, Welles, Coen, Wilder, Ford, Capra, Lynch, Scott, Cameron, Polanski, Huston, Malick, Altman, Burton, Palma, Demille, Peckinpah, Cassavetes and so on and so forth.

Re: The Official "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" movie thread *SPOILERS*

Is anyone else going to tune in to the live DoS sneak peak? It starts in about 2 and a half hours.

I'm already logged in. :)

Logged in and ready. :hi5:

From my POV he's done an amazing job with Middle-earth. He's done a fantastic job of taking what Tolkien created and bring it to the big screen. Its not been perfect mind you but the job he has done has made me as happy a fan as I think I could be.
