The 80's spawned many franchises and sequels, and most of them died in the 80's or early 90's. So many genres to choose from, Horror, Comedies, action, or sci-fi, had classic films, but the sequels while enjoyable, didn't live up to the originals.

I can only come up with these 4 from that era with sequels as good if not better than their originals.

ESB
Aliens
Wrath of Khan
Superman 2

Wow just 4 movies sheesh

The Rocky franchise is the wild card that one is a rollercoaster.

Go ahead say TOD is better than Raiders and just like my alpha male hero I will laugh and mock your disability.

Post LOTR the % of quality sequels have improved tremendously.

The thing about the Wrath of Khan is that I don't think Star Trek The Motion Picture was ever hailed as a classic in the first place. The Wrath of Khan had an easier time being better than it - not to discredit Wrath of Khan, it is a great film.

With a snap of his finger a-dev wipes Star Trek The Motion Picture from existence.

Roddenberry stated that STTMP was a complete experimental project from the start because the fans were demanding a ST movie at the time.the producers didn’t have the right budget , the script was all over the place and the list goes on and on with the problems they had

By WOK, production was more stable

The Motion Picture is underrated in my opinion. It's a beautifully-made piece of slow-moving sci-fi, only problem is that works better for something like 2001 than it does Star Trek.

If memory serves they were planning another TV show but then Star Wars came out and that changed everything.

Yeah I can watch it. As has been said by others it's a kind of film that Star Trek will never be again, which gives it a certain appeal.

My understanding was ST:TMP was made out of a failed TV series revival. I see a-bro had the same recollection.

I agree.

It did but it was a year later than it's Australian release.

Dang it Khev, couldn't you see my post ... I came out all confident with my statement and it turns out I might not be 100% correct (I double checked, I'm wrong lol). Apparently it received a limited release from its distributor AIP in 1980. AIP were in the middle of being bought by Filmways and as a result the film did not get a proper release. Apparently it was weirdly dubbed as well so it would sound American rather than Australian.

I was half right right about the second bit, because Mad Max was not well known they didn't push the connection between the two films when marketing the sequel opting instead to go with the Road Warrior.

Ugh.
The trailer confirmed all the awful rumors we've been hearing about this, and it looks like generic AVP sci-fi.
If the dumb story wasn't enough reason to avoid this, they cast Olivia Munn, the untalented ***** of Attack of the Show as a scientist. :lol
