In the original script the whole thing is about alien homeworld gettin' cooled down and them planin' to settle on Earth when global warming destroys our civilization. So keepin' that in mind, the DNA enhancement kinda sorta makes sense if they wanna move in sometime in the future. But it is still very much the "I spit on your franchise' grave" move. Considering the tech they has and the fact that they just fly around and hunt other species for fun... If they had such a serious problem they'd just terraform some planet nearby.

If you are living in the past and are unwilling to take current lore, canon and factual events in to consideration what are you doing here? We can literally make sense of the next movie right now. In fact, i did. Either stay in the past, or move on from the franchise. This is where the franchise is now, there is people who can show and point you to events that directly answer the questions you pose.
