TWD is not a sacred cow. It is not above criticism. Just a week or so ago, some Freaks were criticizing The Empire Strikes Back. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.

Was it annoying? Yep. Was it frustrating? Hell yeah. But you know what? I let it go. I certainly didn't call anybody stupid or immature or accused them of being overtaken by a virus.

Yeah, it had to be done. Ironically, I was overtaken by a virus. The side effect, explosive verbal diarrhea :lol

DiFabio, I do know you and Khev better than that.

My thing and from what I read DiFabio's too is that this was a great show, can still BE a great show, but they no longer seem to try to make us think that "anyone can die but your favorite characters are just lucky that they haven't faced impossible odds yet." You know? I mean I never for one second expected Rick to die in Season 1 or 2 but the show had an elegant way of implying that his decisions and the consistent "reality" of the world were what was keeping him alive. And that was fun to watch.

It seems like they've strayed from that verisimilitude and kind of throw it in our faces that Rick and especially Daryl are immune while others only are immune until their death would make for good shock or some weird artsy episode. Do you disagree? Do you think that Daryl putting his fingers into a walker's mouth and not suffering a bite was something consistent with Seasons 1 or 2? I'm certainly opening to hearing a counterpoint if you're inclined to give one.

It's not unusual for a main character to feel untouchable, even when the plot is supposed to say otherwise. You knew Walt White wasn't going to get offed in the middle of Season 3 of Breaking Bad. You knew Jack Bauer wasn't going down in hour 14 ... or even in hour 24 of Season 2, or 5, or 7. You knew Raylan Givens would walk away from gunfights in middle-seasons of Justified. You knew Jimmy McGill wasn't getting killed in Ep. 2 of Better Call Saul. The plot says they're in danger ... but the show is continuing, so you expect them to live.

And, that kind of comfort in middle seasons helps make it stronger when the comfort is gone and the character is genuinely at risk ... in final seasons, when characters are written off in surprises, etc.

It's to be expected. Can't really hold that against the writers. There's no way to make Rick feel at genuine risk without actually killing him. As with Bauer, White and Givens ... you're not watching for whether they get out alive, but how they get out alive. Until they don't.

What I miss is that moment Rick was under the tank in the Pilot episode. When the walkers were closing in on both sides and he just put the revolver to his head and...noticed the open hatch under the tank. Genius. Even though I intellectually knew he couldn't die there I had NO idea how he was going to get out of there. But it was plausible. Now I feel like if he ever got stuck under a vehicle he'd just kick or punch a whole horde of them and muscle his way out.

It's spreading. :horror

Just verbal diarrhea, right? :lol

You don't think it'd start to feel like a gimmick if he was constantly getting into those situations and lucking out?

Too much hate! Like I've written before I think the Walking Dead is a show that hovers above mediocre, but if others on here like it they like it. I'm not going to hate on them for that. I think Freddy Got Fingered and Strange Wilderness are borderline genius comedies. I'm sure others here would be willing to disagree. TO each his own.

Maybe, but it was an example of feeling tension for a character that I intellectually knew couldn't really die. It was also an example of him not doing something superhuman to survive.

Nah, I'm pretty sure Rick would flip the tank over, like those women who demonstrate superhuman strength to save their kids.

Don't forget the tour de force that is Cabin Boy.

You're missing a sense of danger, kind of like Indiana Jones 4. There was no sense of danger whatsoever. Indy and the family were pretty much untouchable. Then again, Rick is not the same guy he was in that first episode and he's much more ruthless and experienced in season 5, so he might not panic like that anymore, but I can see how a select group of characters feel untouchable. Rick should be missing an arm by now and Glen should be dead if they were true to the comic.

That's kind of the idea. He's lived in this world a long time ... and, we've watched this world a long time. It'd be weird if he (and we) felt the same fear at walkers in Season 5 as we did in Season 1. Same reason you can't get the awe back at first seeing the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. Awe -- and fear -- subsides with experience.

I wouldn't want Season 5 Rick to act like Season 1 Rick. He's been through a lot more.

When they initially showed Tyreese's group in Season 3, there was a woman with them that shrieked like Kate Capshaw everytime she saw a walker or two. Pretty much the same reaction as the girls in initial group in Season 1. But, she looked like an idiot. Because ... where has she been for the last year or so? A couple of walkers shouldn't still be scary to this chick.

Same idea. If Rick were trapped under a car now, I would expect him to react differently than he did in Season 1.

They kind of did when the prison was attacked by the Governor plus zombies. Many of the main characters were up ****'s creek without a paddle. Glen, in particular, has been in seemingly dead-end situations only to happen to survive by the skin of his teeth.

I dont get it, didnt the purists in here made THEIR OWN SECRET LITTLE GROUP????
I really dont get it, that special special secret group was created when Nam was here... Don't you purists use it for intelligent discussion ?
What's the problem fellas? I'm surprised you guys still post here with having the prestigious club and all...

(not sure what the problem is, looks like the guys from that group are only here to cause trouble and insult everyone else. )

I don't even trash the show as much as everyone is making out to be, I'm used to being the punching bag when everyone overreacts, kind of silly really. I've said a couple of things about the episode itself but im this boogeyman :lol

(I didn't even go in depth about the episode)

As much hate as I get I never insult people like some of the other guys in here, yet.....yeah, IM the bad one....right.

You guys make your own group BUT NOW we haters need to go from here as well......okay? That's fair right? The same old timers insulting and making others feel bad but we haters need to be thrown out. Totally fair

Like I said before about the virus thing, I'm honored that my presence makes such an impression :rotfl

Did Daryl actually stick his fingers inside the mouth? I thought he was feeling around the face and stuck his fingers inside the eye sockets.

If you're trapped you're trapped, it doesn't matter how much experience you have. Difference between Season 1 and Season 5 Rick in a hopeless situation is that Season 5 Rick would have been more at peace with putting the gun to his own head. The danger should be the same regardless...unless you've evolved into an untouchable superhero.

And, if you're not ... you're not. He wasn't. Experience teaches you to keep calm and think on your feet. An experienced combatant will find ways out that an inexperienced one won't. Fewer mistakes lead to getting trapped less often ... or not at all.

He was always untouchable. Even under the tank. The difference here is how you feel about it given your knowledge that he's not going to be written off the show anytime soon. The 'danger' felt is your perception, not the writing. You're adding outside knowledge that isn't in the writing.

I think we both know who the real troublemaker is.
