It's really sickening we need to pay for their incompetence and greed. Once again next year, they're raising property taxes. ****ing enough already. It's nearly tripled in the last two years.

Haven't gotten a cost of living adjustment in nearly 10 years.

Been in my new house for almost 4 years now. My prop taxes have gone up by almost $2,000. This is the theme, pay more and in return expect less......much less.

I fortunately finally got my house in my name (I inherited it and stupidly didn't get changed over immediately like I should of) and I got 30% knocked off the top just for doing that through a City program... but by the end of the decade it probably won't matter anymore since they keep jacking it up.

No kidding. Cities and towns will always find a way of making you pay for it :gah:

are standardized tests as stupid as people say? how they dont really work?
whats the deal with the whole "no child left behind" that I hear ruined schools?

in a town next to me they made this giant ugly sculptures for the downtown area that cost 100 million and most people think they are hideous :lol

No Child Left Behind basically made all the states give standardized tests in schools. The results of those tests determined the funding of that school. It was supposed to increase accountability for the schools and teachers to provide the best education and resources for the students. The problem was that the schools began to focus solely on getting their kids to pass the tests, which meant the teachers taught only what they needed to enable the kids to get good scores instead of giving them a broad education. Not only that, but some schools weren't allowing some kids to take the test if they thought they'd lower the overall score. Some schools were trying to get rid of poor performing students and get better performing students in their schools so they would get more funding.

This is why they're all retarded. They just want the school's productivity and grades to look good on paper, regardless of the context of it.

My small town in Mass has a population of around 19,000. Just over half of our town budget goes to the school systems. Like clockwork, the residents get (Like General Zod touched on), the infamous "school list" of supplies needed. Now I have four kids and we usually have to spend around $100 on each or more, depending, to get them through the school year on supplies. Then we get the famous note from Town saying there is a budget shortage (which includes the school system, go figure, right?....), that will need to be addressed and made up for (and we all know what that means). My town a few years ago voted to increase the meals tax. Not to go to the town of course, but used to save 3 town jobs.

I went to one town meeting recently and asked this question to which I got a b.s. answer. My question to the Board of Selectman was "if we, as residents, need to learn to live within OUR means and are being asked to sacrifice, why doesn't the Town do the same? Where are the Towns sacrifices"? I brought up that people, if lucky enough, get 3% increase in pay, the town jacks up taxes by more than that, including additional taxes and whatnot. People cannot keep up with that. Much like a lot of Towns and Cities, there is way too much fat that needs to be trimmed before you go asking its residents for more money. It's just insane that my town, much like others, thinks that people can just keep on coping and sacrificing while the town does not. Sorry for the long - winded rant :lol

For our new contract, we asked for 3% and were told we were greedy, selfish and didn't care for the kids, so we didn't get that much. We hadn't had any raise in years. This coming from people who sit at a desk all day doing much of nothing and drawing 6 figures a year.

What little raise we got will go towards insurance anyway since they automatically raise it whenever we get a raise. :gah:

I can't imagine how frustrating that is. That's what infuriates me toward my town. Just about half of the town budget goes to the schools but yet it seems like it isn't applied like it should be to where it matters most, since the town always comes back to the residents looking for more for the schools (imho). Makes you wonder where it is really being spent. Certainly not enough toward teachers. And the three town jobs that the meal tax went to were 'Assistant to the Assistant Head Mechanic and two Administrators. No joke. A lot of folk here were NOT happy with that.
