Oh god dont get weener started on vaccines!! :lol

I have no problems with vaccines. We've talked about that a long time ago. Likewise with seat belts and airbags, but for some reason saying that they've hurt or caused the death of some people, which has happened, has somehow made me out to be arguing against them.

I'm wondering. Do people drive around with their phones on themselves all the time? I see so many vids on youtube of people doing this. It's like they keep them on just in case something happens, which in his case, it did.
 
The "risk compensation" theory perpetuated by Adams et al with respect to the efficacy of seat belts in reducing traffic-related deaths and injury has been widely refuted by other researchers and insurers, citing flawed methodologies and the dubious interpretation of data. I posted a response, but there was some sort of "security error", so it didn't get posted. If it shows up, my apologies for the redundancy. Thanks for the links! I was unaware that risk compensation had been challenged recently, regarding seat belt usage. The Smithsonian article you linked suggests it's not a closed debate:

"There has been a lively debate over risk compensation ever since, but today the issue is not whether it exists, but the degree to which it does. The phenomenon has been observed well beyond the highway—in the workplace, on the playing field, at home, in the air. "

Cohen and Einav proved that statistically, more occupants (whose willingness to take risks could be contextually relevant) died in car accidents prior to the use of seat belt legislation. I skimmed through the article, but I presume they in no way claim that risk compensation doesn't apply to driving with a seat belt, or else they'd be laughed out of Harvard. However, they seem to have proved that driving without a seat belt is so dangerous, that the benefits outweigh risk compensation. From your Smithsonian article:

"Even the (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) acknowledges that drivers do compensate for risk to some degree, particularly when a safety feature is immediately obvious to the driver, as with anti-lock brakes. But seat belts? No way, says McCartt.... Questions over risk compensation will remain unresolved because behavioral change is multidimensional and difficult to measure."

Edit: Suppose you participated in a controlled experiment, where drivers are asked to engage in highway driving without the requirement of wearing a seat belt. Even if you're wearing one, you know that others are not. Seeing as you acknowledge that seat belt wearing prevents death in the event of an accident, would that alter your behavior as a driver? Seems obvious.

I agree. If you don't wear a seat belt and you get into an accident, there's an exponentially greater chance that you'll die. Lejuan's sources also demonstrate that legislating seat belt laws does outweigh the detriment of risk compensation. I'd argue that's further proof as to how important it is to wear a seat belt, because risk compensation definitely plays a role in shaping behavior.

However, I think conversations regarding risk compensation and authority are interesting. If you put a safety net under a Trapeze artist, they'll fall more frequently. This has significant social consequences, when you consider what you want for yourself, and how you'd go about organizing a group. The less responsibility you have, the more you'll compensate with risk: recklessness and indifference. As it turns out, the seat belt analogy isn't a very good one, in this regard. People run with front and rear cameras on all the time. Adding one facing the driving wouldnt be uncommon.

It hurts so bad that only like 2 or 3 years ago we were getting Robert E Howard levels of Thor stories...

Maybe it's the artist, and I hope his stories get better, I look forward to the day Thor goes back to being Thor.

No matter what happens, just remember: Atleast he's not replaced by the writer's Daughter's self-insert who's told she's awesome by everyone. Thor has it better than Stark...

Speaking of which, someone at /co/ did this redesign:

For the life of me I can't post a bigger version. Basically he replaced (most of) the gold parts with silver, gave him longer hair and the arm actually looks like the Destroyer's this time around.
 
Yeah I saw the /co/ fixes, I really wish they had moved on to giving him the Destroyer arm already, and yeah, just like in Ribic's concept it should've been pretty large and disproportionate.

And short hair + beard. Just no.
