If a noob starts a thread and there is one. I just say let them know there is a thread and let us close it. **** happens. As far as threats I've had several people over the years tell me they'll see me at SDCC to settle their issue.
That sounds ridiculous! I won't ask how it came to that. I don't picture you being in internet flamewar situations, your posting style suggests a chilled out approach. Which is more what I aim for myself these days.
I do feel somewhat bad drawing attention to (and using the label) ''Noob''. My brother, who isn't really an internet forum kind of guy told me about his one experience of innocently asking for people's opinions on something, a computer game expansion pack I think - he made the mistake of starting a thread and was rounded upon by some of the regulars. I told him ''never start a thread, never'' At the same time though I felt a defensive urge on behalf of my brother, ''how dare they, ****ers''. So there you go. A noob is someone's brother, someone's son, someone's dad etc etc etc
I guess my whole point should have been more generally directed rather than just put on noobs - seek to avoid conflict. Take a joke, get in on the joke. I wonder how many flamewars and ongoing antagonisms could have been averted if not for some misunderstanding or kneejerk reaction to something said at the start. Same probably applies in real life on scales big and small.
The only times I see death threats are when people get killed in first person shooters.
Those hardcore gamers get crazy mad.
The problem is, they're breeding and we have to stem the tide where we're able.
I don't remember what you said, but I remember it not being kind, apologetic or helping to move things along whatsoever. Which would have been the right thing to do. Now I imagine the guy's thread is either closed or being trolled endlessly.
I was mainly referring to your first post in that thread, which I did read, and which was unnecessary and obviously only going to cause problems. I don't need to remember the specifics of your other replies to know that they were only furthering the problem, that you started.See that's your problem Lar'ja. You're not across what was said, and you make claims that simply aren't true. Instead of imagining what has happened to that thread, why don't you go there for yourself - it's still open, and it's not being trolled.
That guy's response was out of all proportion to what I'd posted. It was abusive in fact. I didn't return that abuse. But somehow in your mind, I'm the one owing an apology.
Here you are waxing lyrical about playing nice with others while your own conduct in this thread has been pretty ordinary.
If you want to take me up on anything on this forum - anything at all - I'm happy to engage with you. But get your facts straight. "I don't remember..." and "I imagine..." is the best you've been able to manage so far and really, it's not good enough.
That said, I do wish if membership on SSF was more exclusive. In comparison, I like how neogaf (a popular gaming forum) handles newbs in that regard. The new members there are given a probationary status for a few months, and provided that they stay out of trouble, they can become full-fledged members. That said, I've seen a lot of problematic newbs banned over the years.
It's always good to have an influx of new members. But, it's really the forum vets who're responsible for building online communities, and keeping the discussions thriving. I do feel like we get thrown under the bus a lot on SSF - just for the sake of babying, and appeasing the feelings of some new guy who's way too uptight to get along with anyone (and probably never will).
Who gives a ****?
I'm disappointed in you Lar'ja. So many words to justify the petulant outburst of someone you don't even know.
The last new member that I managed to rub up the wrong way was joshh. Remember how well he turned out?
Such precision. I should have said that to begin with
I had enough.
There's only so much credit you can give B.S. before it starts to gain credibility.

In Australia we have this law:
Offensive behaviour because of race, colour or national or ethnic origin
(1) It is unlawful for a person to do an act, otherwise than in private, if:
(a) the act is reasonably likely, in all the circumstances, to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or a group of people;
Our current government recently backed down from an amendment which would remove the word 'offend'. In other words, in Australia, you're not allowed to offend people based on their race or ethnicity.
So our freedom of speech precludes offending people. For f **k's sake
Yup. That will be my standard reaction from now on when people start posting paranoid rantings.

I just don't think he did anything wrong.
Not going to automatically side with someone just because they've been here longer, or I might know them better.
