...Lastly, it's not at all "free" and isn't just dropping from the sky. The IRS is going to figure out a way to get this back from the economy somehow (if they haven't already).

The gov't is funding these 'rebates' by jacking up gas prices. That's my theory anyway.

Gawd, not even the government is dumb enough to try and "stimulate" the economy by using the money from jacking up the prices on one of the very things that's helping to slow it down in the first place, are they? :monkey2

That would be like, "There's a small hole in the dam right here! Let's take a huge section out of the dam and plug it up!" :lol

I wouldn't put it past 'em, though.

The Federal Gas Tax is a fixed amount per gallon and is not tied to the price of gas, therefore the Feds don't make more when the prices go up. They actually make less because the rising prices means less gallons being sold which means less funds being collected by the government.

Isn't this what they are currently debating stopping (or cutting) for a short period of time in order to try and help folks at the pump?

The U.S. is just going to cave in on itself one of these days. It's such a mess, give out a puny rebate to people while continuing to make the cost of living harder and harder, that makes a lot of sense. They don't even have the courtesy to lube up before they ^^^^ ya.

Yes and its the most asinine idea going. Basically they propose to save the average car owner only $25 over the summer at the loss of near $10 billion to the highway infrastructure fund as a whole. Furthermore most analysts project that considering people are paying $3.50 for gas now there is nothing to stop them from paying $3.50 if we cut the tax. Therefore the 15 cents per gallon cut by the government would just be raised by the oil companies and prices wouldn't go down. Essentially the consumer pays the same but the oil companies get a free 4% profit increase and the roads fall apart. Furthermore, the decrease in $10b of construction or engineering funds means lost jobs which means less money for the economy in the long run. The only winners are the oil companies already enjoying record profits.

(PS. I'm an analyst in the transportation industry :lol.)

That's what they WANT you to believe. The "tax" might stay the same, but the extra physical profit from the rising prices is going straight into their pockets as well, just thru different avenues. Thus they can afford to throw us a few bucks with these 'rebates' to promote a little false faith in Uncle Sam amongst the people during these harsh times. Then again I admit I'm more than a little cynical and paranoid (and uneducated) in this area... My theory is mostly sarcasm. :)

I subscribe to the same line of thinking, and I have George Carlin to thank :lol Seriously though, if you pay attention to his political humor, he actually has some good things to hear and he certainly helped me to approach politics and government with a strong "trust no one" attitude because really, people in power. The politicians you can trust and look out for the little people are the ones that have no power in the government and little chance of ever getting it, and odds are would be corrupted by the system once they did get it. There's no winning. Like I said, this country's going to cave in on itself, it'll just fall apart from it's flaws and the "superpower" of the world will just be another fallen empire in world history.

Nothing wrong with that. I halfwise agree with you as I think most politicians have a vested ($) interest in seeing energy (and food) prices go up. They want global warming because they own all the airconditioning companies.

It was just announced, and although I know this is how our governmnet operates, but they said on the news that the stimulis check that we are getting is not going to stimulate anything.Their blaming it on the high gas prices.

So,they give us a check to make us feel comfortible and then they raise the gas prices to get the money back. This goes back to exactly what I was talking about in the Conspiracy Thread. This is only one of the examples of how we are paying hidden taxes!

If you consider that every corporate/business related tax ends up contributing to the cost of production, then hidden taxes are probably the number one destroyer of our economy.

You can add inflation to that too. Printing more money devalues what already exists (savings in particular), and it essentially only serves the further financing of government spending. The Fed manipulating interest rates is a form of taxation.

People can blame big business all they like. The government is who is screwing you across the board. The only guilt the businesses bear is the fact that they tolerate it. In the worst case scenarios, business actively encourages it by asking for favors (i.e. the ethanol industry).
