Re: UPDATED:HT Nostromo Kane : Fabric Spacesuit (99.5% Done!)

That is one beautifully crafted suit! :clap

Re: UPDATED:HT Nostromo Kane : Fabric Spacesuit (99.5% Done!)

Ooh, VERY nice!

I congratulate you sir, with brand new patches.
Enjoy.

Thanks for these Space Jockey! :hi5:
I know that there's a patch on the back left pocket of the suit.
Do you know where the others go? I will incorporate onto the suit for sure. Tin

Re: UPDATED:HT Nostromo Kane : Fabric Spacesuit (99.5% Done!)

A series of head rigging tests before I get too far with the Kane headsculpt. The original HT head was slightly too small in my opinion. And this Ghostbusters Bill Murray head is slightly too big. So I have to get my custom head somewhere in the middle.

The HT helmet sat almost straight up on the shoulders. So to compsensate - the neck on the HT was unnaturally long in order to push the head up to be visible (and still it wasn't high enough).

In order for the head to look both visible and natural - two things have to be done: the helmet has to be mounted leaning forward on the shoulders, and the figure has to be balanced enough so that he upper body can be hunched forward (another thing difficult to do with the HT rubber suit). This will give the head just enough clearance through the visor to be visible like in the movie. You need to at least see from the bottom of the nose up.

Here are some test pictures with the Murray head mounted in this way. It took me a lot of playing around to get this to look right. It's trickier than you'd think.

Looks great. Yeah, for mine, I have my heads just sitting on the neck (and not snapped into place), and have some blu tac keeping it in place. The heads sit waaaay too low normally.

Kane has the triangular UK Tricentenial Patch (the one without the star in the middle) on the back left pocket; the 'KANE' nameplate replaces the inaccurate one Hot Toys provides on his chestplate.
The other triangular patches go on Dallas and Lambert.

I did all these patches a long while ago incase they released more of the crew in the Hot Toys line, but unfortunately they never did. :monkey2

That is simply outstanding work, Tin! Truly great!

Re: UPDATED:HT Nostromo Kane : Fabric Spacesuit (Head/Helmet test)

Superb craftsmanship!!

Re: UPDATED:HT Nostromo Kane : Fabric Spacesuit (Head/Helmet test)

Tin, I can't put in to words just how marvellous your work on this is. Suffice to say it blows Hot Toys effort out of the water and then some. The Nostromo crew in their away suits was the first image I ever saw from Alien, on the cover of Starburst magazine. It was an image that gripped me and kick started my fascination with the film. Can't wait to see him with the new head sculpt.

Thanks Jmek! I've always had a fondness for these spacesuits for two reasons. The first is similar to you; I was a kid and remember seeing images of the movie (including shots of the suits) and was just captivated. I think part of it is because everything about the movie was SO different from Star Wars - which was the predominant movie at the time. It's starkness and "alien" feel (no pun intended) was awesome. And secondly - I learned much later that Moebius designed the suits. Moebius is one of my all-time favorite visionaries.

Thanks jutty! :) 70 is a good temp. And remember to display yours and not box it.

That is fantastic custom work! I'm looking forward to the new Kane sculpt. Bookmarked your thread.
Thanks Kamandi! :) I should have the elbow guards done soon. Then it's just the head and I'm finished.

Thanks Space Jockey! I'm going to go to Michael's this weekend and get sticker sheets to print the name plate. For the triangle patch - I'll get some of those printer friendly iron on paper. First time trying them so hopfully they work.

Re: UPDATED:HT Nostromo Kane : Fabric Spacesuit (Head/Helmet test)

One little detail I was disappointed with on the original HT helmet was the fact that the overhead dome light didn't eluminate Kane's face inside the helmet. At first I thought it was just positioning of the head/face. But playing around with that - I realized that it was the actual housing of the LEDs that was blocking off the light source.

So I've made the following mods to the helmet lighting system:

Refer to image below:

1) I applied a little thinned out black enamel paint over the red instrument panel LED inside the helmet. It was too bright and overshadowed any light coming from the dome light. The enamel coat still allows the red LED to be visible, but the light from it is muted by about 60%.

2) I carved out some of the housing frame around the bottom of the dome LED to expose more of the bulb on the bottom side of the housing. This allows more of the LED light to be directed downward through the visor and onto Kane's face. The housing before directed most of the light straight forward - missing Kanes face almost completely.

With the red LED reduced - the face gets eluminated much better (especially with the face positioned more upward now in my new helmet configuration on Kane's shoulders).

I tried to take some pictures of the eluminated face, but it's not possible with my camera. But it looks like how the faces are lit in the movie.

I also plan to add condensation effects on the visor to match the movie. This should catch the light and make the elumination even more noticeable.

Good idea regarding the iron-on paper. I will definitely follow your lead.

Thanks!!

Re: UPDATED:HT Nostromo Kane : Fabric Spacesuit (Modified Helmet Lighting)

Just making some minor tweaks to the suit in between waiting for the Hurt sculpt to cure. No one would notice the tweaks except me:

- I wasn't 100% happy with how the shin guards were conforming to the legs. Looked too stiff compared to the read thing. Then I noticed on some reference pics that it seems on top of strapping the guards - they also stitched it to the pantlegs. So I did the same and the shape is much better. I'm also on the hunt for a lighter shade of brown for the straps.

- I wasn't 100% happy with the little gap between the sculpted gloves and the sleeve of the arms. So I added a fabric brim on the glove wrists to bridge the gap. Not screen accurate, but it helps to make that area more solid. I just need to grime them up a bit later to blend them in with the arm sleeves.

- I stitched the fabric neck of the suit to have an even thinner vertical profile. It helps make the overall shoulders less bulky looking.

- Added wear and tear to the edges of the glove like the ones in the movie.

- Reduced the thickness of the guantlets. They were too large and distracting before.

That's it for now while I work on the head. Should have the head done (maybe painted) by Sunday.

Re: UPDATED:HT Nostromo Kane : Fabric Spacesuit (Minor suit tweaks)

I finally got the dome lighting adjusted perfect so that it eluminates the inside of the helmet much better. So much so that I can see the elumination even when there is another light source in the vicinity.

The head inside is just placeholder (there's no face).

Looking great! Eager to see that finished Hurt head in the suit. You'll have one of the coolest and most-coveted customs on the board, then. :)
