I think this may be a case where the marketing will work against the movie. It's about childhood, but not necessarily for children. People see giant muppets and they bring the kids. All of the kids in my audience were squirming with boredom but all the adults applauded at the end.

This is a totally uncompromising film, it definately does not attempt to be child-friendly, not that there is anything to really object to (talking as a parent here); but it is presented as it is, it doesn't pander and it doesn't try to be cute. It is real, in your face and asks some tough questions about what it means to grow up, what it means to be young and "wild" and how life is well ... scary. The third act doesn't make any attempts to wrap things up, or provide a happy ending; it just is, and I suspect some will be a bit disappointed with that. I know when the credits rolled I was shocked and that was even after seeing a good 20 mins or so at the Comic Con; it was an experience, but true to life, there are hard parts of growing up, and it doesn't have to wrap up with a bow all the time. The ending isn't sad by any stretch, but our characters don't "live happily ever after" either; it is just another day in the life of Max, but hopefully a day he will remember, but we don't have any way to fully know for sure. What will come of Max, will his visit with the Wild Things matter in the long run, will his encounter with himself (remember spoiler free) change him, can he overcome his anger and fear of the world; well we will just need to prod Mr. Sednick and Jonze to give us more. Oh, and just how touching were the voice parts and effects!

I would give it a solid 4/5 :clap

:lecture QFT. Couldn't have said it better myself. I didn't cry, but I felt like I had just experienced something you don't experience very often in film making: an uncompromised vision. Spike Jonzes' balls are bigger than Devastator's. It was so truthful and in your face. The opening with Max chasing the dog was almost unsettling in it's ruthlessness, almost savage. And the way the camera was low so we are running with him. I give Warner and Legendary a lot of credit for releasing this as is. I loved it but know many people who hated it. And not just "meh", but full on hate. Oh well, good art should be debated and analyzed.

I have to QFT your QFT. This movie is totally raw, to a degree that few movies even aspire to. The reason many people are so taken with the depiction of childhood is because it's not the sugary conception of Hollywood screenwriters. I was immediately reminded of how damn cold it is in your snow fort!
And THIS is what great child acting looks like. Not robotic, wise-beyond-years mini-adults.

LOVED IT! A lot more psychology behind the characters than I expected which was great. When I say psychology I do not mean anything abnormal but simply realistic and true to life as Matt finely stated.

WTWTA rocks! :rock

Who would have expected one of the Wild Things to call Max "so damn selfish;" really analytical, the film is staying with me.

Great movie! Captured the feel of the book spot-on! I bawled my eyes out. I absolutely loved the dialogue between Max and the monsters when they first meet - perfect childhood reasoning! Such a great "little" movie... I can't wait to own it.

i agree great movie. probably way over a lot of kids heads though. there were tons in the showing i sat in & i think most of the dialogue was lost on them as they looked kinda restless & bored at times ........but when it came to the monsters wild rumpus they were all on the edge of their seats...:lol

i hope when the dvd/blu ray is released we get tons of extras........:banana

Guys.

If you're really ready to pull back the curtain and take a long hard look at the shadowy corners of your own soul....take an edible or two and watch this movie alone in a dark room.

It's finally legal in Ohio. I had to celebrate. So I watched one of the most soul-crushingly depressing movies ever committed to film and enhanced my state of mind so that it felt like it was all happening to ME directly.

Maybe it's not for everyone.
