You know, it is possible to enjoy a movie and think it's good without being so caught up in the excitement that you also think you see perfection and the face of God in it. Just saying. :dunno

People really are too quick and easy with the 9s and 10s around here. That dilutes things considerably.

Always with the extremes. A movie either sucks beyond belief, is a complete "meh" or is regarded as the "face of God*."

*Or "perfection" for those with a quick Edit button. ;)

And in my defense I'd actually give ESB an 11 out of 10 so Avatar was never on that level for me. :nana:

But that's exactly the way people react here. That's what I'm saying. It's the rational, more moderate/sensible opinions when a movie first comes out that are drowned out by the extremes.

I agree about all the 9's and 10's though. I actually don't give those out very often.

I roll my eyes when someone goes into the rating thread and says "Terminator 2 - 10/10." Seriously? So where does The Seven Samurai, or Jaws, or Bridge on the River Kwai fit then if T2 is a 10? :cuckoo:

EXACTLY. :lecture It should be a fairly relative scale. But for many this is a non-existent concept. :lol

Yet you didn't hesitate to tuck Avatar right in there. :cuckoo:

He has officially taken it back, though. I'm willing to give him a mulligan and chalk it up to a lesson learned. :duff :lol

Khev can now remove the scarlet letter "A" (for "Avatard") from his bosom.

... At least until the day AVATAR 2 is released. :monkey1

Well it did seem like I was watching a modern day "Star Wars" (which I would rank among the all time greats) but after repeated viewings at home I see that it doesn't quite deserve that association. I used T2 as an example because it already is a 20 year movie that isn't riding a wave of IMAX euphoria.

When one does that though, it calls into question all the films they've done that to, like, say... TDKR. :lol

Watching it I got the sense it could be my daughter's "Star Wars" equivalent, but she was 3 at the time. Personally, all I saw was a CG cowboys and Indians meets FernGully. To this day I still don't get the mindless praise Avatar gets. :lol

Yeah, I do think TDKR is another example of a film where some on the extreme ends will ultimately come closer to the center.

Incidentally, its probably another 7-8/10 movie.

I'm sensing a pattern here. :lol

Cameron's going to have to work quite hard to get my full enthusiasm for that one. It shouldn't factor into movie ratings but I can't help but also consider how he rubs me as a person. So narcissistic, even smugly smiling to the cameras on the red carpet of The Hobbit premiere, as if just because its 3D he gets to take partial credit for it. I just find it annoying.

And from Day 1 (look it up!) even at the height of my enthusiasm I stated that Avatar was great but should remain a one-off. Now my main excitement for a sequel is to just hope that it gets killed by Avengers and The Hobbit movies just to knock him off his pedestal that everything he touches is the purest gold.

I still love old James Cameron and TDKR felt like an early 90's Cameron Batman epic. If you guys weren't so hung up on the "but comic Batman beats up muggers too!1!!" then you'd see that as well. :lecture

Don't you mean modern day Dances with Wolves or Pocahontas?

Have you seen the Hobbit yet? I haven't read your review yet.

Nope. I'm waiting until X-mas so grandma can watch the munchkins. I've no doubt I'll enjoy it though given I don't have ADD/ADHD and I know the story will be engrossing enough that the long sit will be well worth it and virtually unnoticeable.

Nolan's Batman doesn't care about thieves, rapists nor murderers so long as they're not organized. I'm sorry, that's just not Batman. You can pretend it is until the cows come home, but it's not.

Some people do fling high rankings around. For me I give out what I personally feel a movie is to me. I gave Thoe Hobbit: AUJ a 9.25 because to me it was on par with TTT. I was pulled into the story and came out of the movie feeling as good as I could hope. If others feel I ranked it a certain way because of my attachment that's fine.
