Just saw the film. It's not as good as First Class and DOFP or X2, but it's up there with X1.

7/10 (As a comic book movie)

It's not a great film, and Apoc looks lame, but he's a better antagonist than most of the MCU villains...and MOS Zod and Enchantress in SS.

I know the hand to hand combat action in the X MEN films is not great, but the display of powers in this film is as comic book as it gets and more impressive in terms of how powerful the characters are than anything in the MCU or DCEU (so far). Apoc fighting multiple X MEN while mentally battling Xavier and Jean is great.

It's actually cool to see powerful comic characters be powerful on film even if it takes using too much crappy CGI. I hope Thanos can live up to X Men Apocalypse.

I went 7.5 after my bluray viewing (fourth viewing).

My rankings for the series:

X-Men (2000) 9/10
X2: X-Men United (2003) 10/10
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) 8/10
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) 6/10
X-Men: First Class (2011) 10/10
The Wolverine (2013) 8.5/10
Days of Future Past (2014) 10/10
Deadpool (2015) 10/10
X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) 7.5/10

To me that's setting a pretty low bar for Thanos :lol

Not really. What's the most impressive thing he's done beside sitting on his space toilet? As far as his powers go, he's basically a larger, more powerful version of the X Men Apoc (movie). He won't be fighting karate with Capt America or dancing against Starlord, but then again, the MCU has a way of making characters weak.

If they screw up Thanos, I will officially quit the MCU.

Ant-Man and CW made me stop buying the MCU blurays but I'm not ready to give up on watching the films quite yet. I'm watching Doctor Strange first show opening night and I'll do the same for every MCU film leading up to Infinity War.

Thanos is my favorite Marvel villain. I own IM #55 CGC graded at 9.0. If they pull an Ultron on Thanos I will officially walk away from the MCU.

Good assessment here, and a rarity not to be filtered through clearly existing biases/baggage (which I can't claim for myself).

I think Marvel's gonna have to do something to make Thanos stand apart beyond being super powerful. Otherwise it'll just be the same old same old.

It's hard to imagine the Russos figuring out a way to make Thanos more destructive than Magneto on a good day.
The best, cheapest and most effective way would be what everyone at this point has suggested, to just kill an Avenger like swatting a fly from the get-go, on first contact.

Break some hearts, make the audience hate him and fear him.

That's it, instant success.

Ultron was a travesty, but I trust the Russo brothers.

I can see Thanos using the reality gem in ways that can fool the audience into thinking certain things are happening as well as the time gem to make the characters extremely old or controlling time itself. I could see them having some fun with the IG and the limitless power that comes with it. It has the potential to be a very creative battle.

Make it two Avengers. Hawkeye and Widow, nice knowing you. Now on with the movie. I mean seriously, we got the classic "Ant Man on arrow" moment. They can call it a day with him now.

My fear isn't how they'll handle his power set but rather his characterization. He's an incredibly cerebral character. The comedic, wise-cracking route Marvel took with Ultron in AOU would be an even worse disaster with Thanos.

IW needs to be a darker film, primarily because Thanos is extremely dark.

I too am a little worried that they've already painted themselves into a corner with his weak CG character design. Plus "Fine, I'll do it myself!" like some pouty little girl storming off to make her bed didn't help either.

I know that. I was making a joke at Magneto's expense...

Oh ok :lol I mean, Magneto had the power to destroy the whole planet, which is more than most of the MCU villains are capable of so far, so I thought you meant that the Russo bros might not want to go full CGI fest and bombastic and keep it more grounded.

I'm still hopeful that they'll get him right but I already disagree with their decision to 100% CGI him. The practical version Whedon used in The Avengers (2012) was perfect. The all-CG GOTG/AOU version looks very much like a computer-generated character and more like Brian Dennehy than Josh Brolin.

This was so great. Not sure why they had to change it.

If its real, it looks real.

Yep. No need for him to be CG. At all. Especially with a powerhouse like Brolin playing him. Hopefully while the Avengers heroically beat him back he makes lots of outtakes to the audience to exclaim, "You are FAILING!" Agreed?

Well, I'd go the Vader route - with Brolin voicing him and Damion Poitier (the 6'5" actor above who played him in 2012's The Avengers) as the face/body.
