Yeah, Pjam... I too agree that even the famous SDCC Obi was not 100% Ewan in color. It was even a tad too dark. I think that the extra mile that was taken with the apps on the one I did for you helped push it into a more true to the actor paint scheme.

I only hope that my next couple are as good if not better than my last.

You and me both, brother! :lol

Seriously, pjam's right that the SDCC repaint didn't quite capture the reddish-blonde of this pic:

It's still nice, but your repaint for pjam is closer to Ewan, at least to my eye.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

DA's repaint is the best that i've seen so far from anyone elses attempts

I'm sure they will Josh! :D

It's just that I saw you posted our Obi repaint on RS and some clown said the beard looked "too light", actually his words were "Hair looks alright to me but the beard seems to close to flesh tone to work" so I had to defend it :D

especially after all the work and effort we put into making it as screen accurate as possible. :lol

btw, here's another shot of the beard.
Note the neck is in direct sunlight.

I think so too, and thank you nash! In fact you know the SDCC pics as well as anyone having posted them for us here.

Yes, even in this pic which is off-colored pinkish in tint, you can clearly see his beard is devoid of brownish tones and is a reddish color, so Josh's efforts were right on!

I will post some pics of mine when it gets here so we can all see him as a complete figure in different lighting.

Thanks Paul... and thanks Nash.. Yeah, I think that people will make one statement from seeing that pic... but another to see it on a body and in action.

Anyway, it's hard to capture such a light colored beard as Ewan had... in some lights it's more red, in some....more blonde. It all comes down to how the light catches the hair, and I tried to go somewhere in the middle of that... to best represent both lighting situations.

Glad to know that I succeeded. :D

Very nice MaulFan and welcome. Any tips on how you matched the color of the scene for the picture you took?

4 Years of college studying graphic design and heavily using photoshop plus 2.5 years of reading books and experimenting with photography equipment. I'd like to tell you guys it's easy but it comes from my years of studying this type of thing down to the most minute things, when I use flash to take the figure shot I know from looking at the screen capture where the light should be coming from and I know easily what tools can be used in the software after to compensate, and luckily for my parents who paid for me to go to school, but unfortunate for most of you, it does take years of hard work to truly excel at photoshop and photography, and you have to have a passion for it and the right eye and artistic sense for disecting what you see and seeing how to make it into your ultimate vision.

Re: Obi's Beard

Obviously the SSC paint apps with Obi's beard was too dark but what is a Film-accurate representation? The SDCC repaint or something else? Just wanted to share with you what I believe is accurate (based on actual film) and pics below and what I used as reference in my notes to DarkArtist when I had him do MY Obi... they were basically to "use the SDCC paint apps as a base then use reddish blonde highlights" to realize his ACTUAL appearance.

First, 2 Pics of OBI

Finally, The Obi DarkArtist repaint

Other than getting Ewan McGreggor in your house to check out his hair and beard, which by the way would be pretty awesome, I don't think it can ever truly be determined what a "film accurate" paint application would be on this figure. If you look at some of the promo shots, which I'm sure are the primary source material for Sideshow, the production paint is very close to the colors in those, if you look at screen shots, you could probably count more than half a dozen variations throughout the movie with the variations in lighting, which also affect whether the tunic is nearly brown looking or almost very white. I for one am very happy with Obi-Wan and wasn't dissappointed when I got him because I love the character and while the initial prototype shots on the site got me excited, the Toy Fair pictures at Rebelscum got me more excited, and if you look at the production Obi-Wan compared to those pictures, it looks the same to me (but for the grey in the mustache which doesn't bother me but it is different), and yes that one SDCC shot looked amazing and I loved it but to me it always looked like more real than I could ever hope for from any manufacturer, so going back to Toy Fair as what I felt to be the pinnacle of what Obi-Wan could be, my expectations were met, and I haven't spent a moment not enjoying him since I got him.

I can't wait to see it in person Josh. I know we had at least 5 different colors worked into the beard so it WILL play wonderfully in different lights I think... here's the way I feel, if YOU tell me you couldn't take your eyes off it, I can only imagine the "geek out" coming my way on Tuesday when he gets here! :D

Hmm, sounds good. Thanks for the info.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

OH YES! Well my wifeis letting me keep my Obi (prior I was gonna get rid of it and give it to my friend for x-mas) because I convinced her that my friend wouldn't care for it (he's Superman guy over Star Wars) So hopefully it shows up soon, and I can make a nice lava set up for him to fight Vader on!

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Well I won an auction today that included the Unleashed Obi-Wan, Anakin, AND General Grievous all for $20 shipped. Not bad at all since that Greivous is now being sold as a target exclusive for that price plus tax.

Anyway, Andy, do you have any more information on how your friend built his Mustafar duel set up? I got the lights and lava now. I think all I need is the kind of box he used and what he did to keep the figures up.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Here's a photoshop image I made of how I would repaint Obi-Wan if I could.

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

did you smooth out the mustache lines?
and the hair color looked nice, but I bet a wet-wash-brushing of darker brown would've distinguished the details on the hair better:rolleyes:

Congrats. Glad shes letting you keep both now.

My first SW dollie, wow, really not the action figures I grew up with. The likeness is uncanny on this one, and the costuming almost flawless - I wish they would have used a bit of a thicker material for the tunic. After a bit of futzing, including a "water treatment" for the cloak; this is what I came up with.

We love pics! Thanks LF, glad you dug him, great sculpt, isn't it?

Re: 12" Obi-Wan IMAGE Thread

Absolutely, and you know the paint doesn't even really bother me. Either my paint isn't as bad as some or more likely, again those initial SS pics were VERY misleading. Perhaps you could add a bit more red to the hair, but overall I am VERY happy with him. :D
