Got my figure today! Didn't arrive until 9pm
Didn't have much time to look it over too thoroughly, just wanted to make sure there weren't any QC issues. Thankfully none, not even any smudges/dye on the serious headsculpt
Quick review of my first artisan, just by the nature of the hair, there is not much futzing needing to be done. BUT, those pieces of straighter hair definitely need to be reworked as they're twirled around neighboring dreads which I don't like.
The bandana doesn't feel out of scale in person. The dreads are, but not as much as pictures make them out to be. The dreads are really well done, though, no doubt about it. You have to look for the bird skull in the back of the hair as it's buried in the back.
The hat is comically large. Very much halloween costume-esque. I only had the AWE hat out at the time to test and it fits flawlessly. For those that have one of the AWE hats or were able to grab the last few on eBay, I think you'll be happy. You'll probably need to heat it up some as I dremeled out mine to get it to fit on the DX15 hairpiece. I really hope we get a custom hat made (hopefully purchasable at OSK), so everyone can replace the awful one that this figure comes with. Didn’t think it could get worse than the DX15 hat, but it has.
Speaking of the DX15, I think it's been noted, but the faces fit in the new DX37 hair and vise versa. DX06 heads fit, but are a tad loose. Haven't tested what they look like on the new body though.
The paintwork on the faces is really well done. As we all know, probably a bit too much speckling especially compared to InArt's skintones, but this is better skintone paintwork than both DX06 and DX15. I think what gets me more is the level of skin texture that's visible. This isn't one that appears to have softened up during production to my eyes. Speaking of eyes, they look incredible. Some of the best eyes HT have made. My most recent HT figure with moveable eyes is Clonobi, and I think these are even better than those. My most recent InArt is Cavill Superman and these on Jack appear to look more realistic than his as well; but that's not a shot at InArt who do really great eye work as well. I just think these have the edge on a micro level in comparison.
Costume is very much upgraded, though, if you're more on the casual side, I can see why it wouldn't seem like
that much of an upgrade from the DX15. I think it’s worth it regardless but I can see why some DX15 owners might not care. Definitely an upgrade if you have the DX06 and would definitely recommend picking up parts at least to upgrade that figure. When it comes to the thinness of the material though, this wins hands down. The clothing feels higher quality than the DX15 and definitely the DX06. I am disappointed that the coat has less weathering on it than the DX15 coat.
Ship in the bottle looks properly dirty on mine. I think it was Justin who was saying it was
too dirty and he couldn't see the Black Pearl inside. The Pearl is plenty visible in mine.
The sword is painted so well that I don't care that it's not diecast. I like the weathering and that it's not this brand new, shiny and clean looking sword. Only potential downside it the weight for those that it matters to. I can see why, but it doesn't bother me as long as it's well done like the sword is here.
Base is nicely done as well. The paint and texture of the wood is great. In comparison, the wood on this base is painted much better than the wood topper on the InArt Harry Potter. The water looks nicely done as well. I don't have anything to compare it to as I sold the DX15 long ago.
Current end thoughts - I'm thinking I want to get another to have 3 total DX37 figures. One (the artisan) to keep as is (aside from futzing) to represent DMTNT. One to turn into an OST figure. And one to break down to utilize with my current DMC/AWE custom. Then, just sell all the parts I don't need. I'd also love to get the DX15 base to use with this figure as it's more specific to DMTNT and use this DX37 base with my DMC/AWE custom instead.
I'll have more thoughts as well as pics when I can actually get to the costume to redress it. That won't happen until this weekend unfortunately.
