Yeah it definitely helps that I just find the continuation of the Skywalker Saga inherently more exciting and thrilling to watch than a story about how some random rebels stole the plans to a Death Star we already watched get destroyed 40 years ago.
I feel like as a saga film TFA fits in the "action and wonder" department even though there are echoes of ANH weaved in an out.
R1 does the prequel route solidly and is a different beast entirely, introducing new characters quickly and showing a pivotal point in Star Wars lore. I for one am glad there was a "grittier" feeling and the ending they chose. The emotions towards the end were amazing - sadness at the heroes, pride and what they accomplished, vader going off and being amazed at that to sadness again mixed with hope on the final cameo.
Hope future stand alone films are allowed to feel different but tied to this awesome universe.
Rogue Two: where many Bothans died...
TPM wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't for the way too long podrace. Jar Jar was annoying as anything, but he was bearable. The lightsaber dual at the end is worth watching for alone.
AotC is the real abomination, particularly up until the arena when all the Jedi show up. At least there was a cool battle at the end, otherwise I would probably never watch that movie again. Jango is cool at least.
My sentiments as well regarding both films. The long, drawn out pod race for me is a snoozer. The only good part of that film for me was Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. I thought Liam Neeson made a perfect Qui-Gon.
There's really nothing good about AotC except the death sticks scene with Obi-Wan and the lightsaber duel in the arena, as you mentioned.
Climbing that razor-thin wire was silly. You know how much that would cut into your hand?
I thankfully know the film so little, I'm not even familiar with that part. Sounds made up.
You're too critical. I'm sorry that you didn't love them.
