That completely disregards the story in the book that inspired it...

Um story? The source material didn't give a lot to work with, but All the "plot points" from the book were there in the movie.

I think they did a brilliant job of building a story from what is essentially a picture book. Plus Maurice Sendak the author of the book was one of the producers of the movie. Would she [Edit: he:eek:] have been involved in it if it 'completely disregarded the story in the book that inspired it...'

I agree that it was a "minor masterpiece of a film."

I thought about it for days after seeing it. It was very metaphorical, and quite dark and deep.

It is similar to Alice In Wonderland in that it is about a youngster who goes to a magical land, but Alice is a pretty straightforward story that you can forget about quickly (I did love Alice as well though) whereas Wild Things really sticks with you!

Well it stuck with me anyway!

Ugh! Being John Malkovich was the first film I worked on, so with this also being a Spike Jonze flick, I REALLY wanted to like it. Major disappointment. Couldn't have been a more depressing flick even with an irradiated Meryl Streep deciding which child to give up to stop an asteroid from crashing Wall Street. :monkey3

Henson did a great job on the beasties, though they still couldn't save this somber-fest.

(And Maurice is a HE).

I think it was a beautiful film, but it certainly isn't the same as the book. First and foremost, Max in the book is a frickin' monster not a fragile misunderstood kid like Spike Jonze's movie made him out to be.

All that being sad, the movie is better :)

But I'm actually kind of pissed than AVATAR won "Best Cinematography". It's almost entirely digital and CGI! Most of cinematography is the art of lighting (and shooting) on film. It's gathering complete images through the camera lens. If a movie that is 90% green screen with most of its images coming from computer software can win this, why not an honestly animated film like UP? I can live with AVATAR's win for Art Direction (though it was far from original) or Best Visual Effects (though DISTRICT 9 had much more photo-realistic FX that didn't pull you out of the story)... but Cinematography? Just asinine.

And that is probably the major reason why I don't personally consider Avatar being so award worthy as others do.

I am pleased The Hurt Locker won most of the big awards.
Although it was not the perfect movie and did have flaws, it was still the most emotional involving picture of 2009 (Well if you don't include the first and last 15mins of Up).
I loved Avatar, but there have been better blockbusters before it that have not won, like Star Wars and Empire, ET, Jaws, and Raiders to name a few.
Also I was pleased for Christoph Waltz winning too.

I think the flaw of the movie was that you can tell that it went to the cutting room several times. Jonze wanted it to be even more darker than the end result. Jonze wanted to do something gutsy and I personally feel the Producers got in the way. And because of that I think the Academy ignored it. Which is a shame.

I really enjoy that each Wild Thing represented a part of Max's personality. I also love how it shows the truth about how a young child deals with loneliness and depression.

Finally, the Academy made the world see how worthless was Avatar.Awesome.

Yeah. if it bored you, why did you fork more money out to see it again? My not understanding that is less retarded than seeing something you didn't like once a second time...

I took my nephew to go see it at the request of my sister. I also started to fall asleep half way through. The only reason I didn't is because I had a 7 year old next to me and obviously one cannot fall asleep in that situation. As for my retarded comment, yes you kinda deserved it. If you want to have a conversation or speak on one comments when you quote them please insert a question or comment instead of all emoticons. LOL! :lol Thank you drive through. :rock

IB should have won best movie though.

Cameron, you may impress the blind tards but you aint King of the World anymore.

Worm out.

Bam, i'm disapointed that you associate yourself with the IronWarts guy and that other guy with the pseudo toy site...Avatard was dumb let it be known.

:lol Shai Your Avatar is awesome!!! :rock

Regarding the Oscar's??? I am happy with all the results.

I'm glad Avatar lost. I just wish the cameras would have focused on Cameron's face so I could see the dejected look on his face. You just know he was half-way out of his seat, about to make his way to the stage when he heard the news, because he really thought it was his. He had conceded the director win to that woman, but wanted best picture.

Why? He's said time and time again he wanted Kathy to win. He already had his shot. I dont think he expected Avatar to get a BP nom.

That some are even mentioning AVATAR in the same breath with those films is what annoys many of us to no end.
