In my mind, as I said before, Alien and Aliens are canon. Alien 3 is a'aight, but I prefer to think of the saga as over after Aliens, and I don't try to imagine what happens after that. Same with Terminator 2 being the end of that franchise in my mind. I don't care what the creators or studios say, that's it for me.
I think this franchise could still be viable, but to do that I think they would need to bring on some good, creative talent. And at that point, whether or not they ignore what came before or not isn't as important as just making a decent movie with good storytelling and acting. Like Abrams did with Star Trek, or Nolan did with Batman. The basic core of Alien/s is very cool and distinctive, and there are a lot of places those kinds of stories can go. But step one is take away crappy, hack creative teams.
