I'm not crazy about the vac metal purple parts either, but the 50% increase in paint applications/decals elsewhere on the figures seals the deal for me (and in this image you can't even see the additional detailing on the arms, the black & yellow hashmark stickers all over the vehicles, the painted ladders, or the painted wheels and treads). Maybe Takara-Tomy will do all the extras but without the vac metal; a guy can dream.

As huge as these figures are, they're going to need all of the extra paint and decals they can get (U.S. retail versions pictured):

Thanks for those comparison shots your are right once you look past the shiny bits the SDCC version does look much better the details really stand out on that version & he looks huge.

I'd love to see some shots with the original release & also some of the original G1 characters.

My Warpath arrived a short time ago, I haven't attempted transformation yet but the tank mode is awesome,

SDCC Devastator looks like a misguided attempt at polishing a turd. Once they're all on ebay the asking price for European collectors will be even more ridiculous than the standard release.

I love the Mad Max reference. :lol

Transforming Warpath wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting, there's some clever stuff going on with the turret transformation and on the whole it's not that annoying either apart from a couple of bits near the end. I used Peaugh's video review for assistance.

Once it's done the robot mode looks fantastic,

I also found an alternate use for the riot shield. If you want to homage MP22 then this is possible,

With the aid of a bit of sticky tape all your figures can have a huge, pointless buttflap!

And here we have an example of how to do a Classics combiner properly....no compromises.

The combined mode looks fantastic and from the pics I've seen elsewhere, all the Combaticons look just as good despite their somewhat redesigned nature in comparison with the original toys.

See bud, that's the thing about personal preferences and opinions.

Personally, that Bruticus does nothing for me. Looks like something out of a Michael Bay movie, AND, once all its said and done, you are looking at roughly $600 for an unlicensed Bruticus. If that's others people's cup of tea, then more power to them. Hasbro Devy (while not perfect) it's only $150 (prob a lil more if you are an intl collector) and will do just fine in my collection until something better comes along.

The way I see it, if I'm going to spend $600 on something that's not even a licensed product, it must sure as hell drop my jaw to the flor. At this point though, I'd just save an extra $400 and get the next Ultimetal offering (whenever that is).

It's really all relative to TF collecting.

Boom!

I like that Bruticus, even though he's a bit busy. But I don't like him enough to pay $600. Devy may look better once collectors can futz him a bit, as well. Looks like Hasbro is just giving us "out of the box" shots of the combined mode so far.

If I still collected Classics I'd have considered paying UK prices for it, but probably wouldn't have as Devastator is the only combiner I really have any nostalgia for.

That being said I think Warbotron did a decent job, it looks nice enough for what it is.

What exactly do you think could be done to CW Devastator to improve it?

Absolutely. You really nailed it, and I feel like the combined mode really gives a sense of realism while stating true to the g1 character... It's pretty much what I wished the movies would have done aesthetically.

And the discussion about personal preferences has been brought up, and for me... When I look at Hasbro devastator I see $150 that could be spent on more quality products. Literally nothing about it is speaking besides the price for me and it's pretty much a 17" display of where the classics line has fallen to over the past few years. Glad there's a market for it but I wouldn't pay two cents for it.

I'm not sure I grasp your logic over licensing; it makes zero difference barring the missing faction symbols. If it's well designed, looks good and represents the original toy in an updated way, I'm jumping in balls deep.
But opinion is all relative to collecting in general; you either like something or you don't. Manufacture means nothing to me as long as it ticks all the right boxes.

The obvious suggestion would be to give more attention to the individual 'bots, with more articulation, fewer hollow parts, etc., to make them more Masterpiece-like. Combined mode also looks a bit clunky, and a bit more reminiscent of the G1 figure than the animated model IMO. But it's possible he can achieve more interesting/dynamic poses like that Bruticus. If so, then I think it will be more desirable. Still pretty dang desirable as-is. I've come around a bit on that guy, and am thinking I will at least pick one version or another of him up.

It's been a while since I've done a retrospective look back at one of my original G1 Transformers. So with lots of collectors now getting their 3rd party not-Megatron (aka Apollyon), I figured it was time for me to give my thoughts on the old Megatron figure.

Even after 40 odd years since it was designed, it's still a pretty awesome figure! Hope you can check out my vid and give your thoughts too :)

I would have been very OK with the movie TF's looking something like that. That aesthetic is faithful to G1 with enough extra detail to work in a live action environment.

I don't even have the price speaking to me, paying the equivalent of $220 in the UK for that thing would be insane even if I still collected Classics :lol

For the same money I could get something that fits with the rest of my collection that actually looks and feels like it's somewhat worth the pricetag.

Wanderer,
Exactly. I'm intrested in characters, not brand names. If I just stuck to official products I'd have stopped collecting Transformers several years ago.

With the exception of blue Bluestreak I've no intrest in more carbots and am bored with Takara's focus on them, nor do I care about the likes of Star Saber.

I am much more intrested in finishing the Dinobots and getting the Insecticons, Reflector, Cyclonus and Scourge.

Takara aren't doing any of those characters, so they don't get my cash and at this point the number of characters they could make that would tempt me is getting ever smaller.

karamazov80,
Good points. I think we'll see some kind of 3rd party upgrade sets for the combined mode but I'm not sure whether the Constructicons can be improved with a few add ons and there would also be the additional costs of such upgrades to consider.

You don't really have to, it's my logic as to how I see things related to TF's.

If people have no problem paying $600 for an unlicensed gestalt that IMO doesn't even look that great, then more power to them. Doesn't ruin my day in any way.

Like I said, much like some FT offerings, a 3P release must seriously drop my jaw to the floor if I'm going to invest in it. Otherwise I'd just wait for a Takara version that might just never happen anyway.

Exactly. I only collect the ultimetal line and select 3p classics offerings now. Somewgere over the past six months i stored having any sort of want for a big tf collection and now i only collect stuff i think is just awesome. I sold most of my classics, all my mps and didn't even buy hastak stuff in 2014.

The thought of getting stuff like devy just to review and try to flip after crosses my mind, but it's not even worth the hassle.
