Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

I wonder how films of today would fair if not for Home Video and the lack of rereleasing in theaters..

Its impressive that its at 24 and climbing on the adjusted for inflation list..

I wonder what it would do it got rereleased every few years and that was the only way you could see it..

Of course back in the day you didn't have a film opening up on the amount of screens you do today.. And everything is so much more of an event then things use to be. I mean my multiplex had it playing in 8 out of 10 screens opening weekend.. lol That's nuts.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

After the unprecedented success of Aquaman and Shazam, I bet Joker or WW84 break all those Endgame and Jim Cameron records.

Honestly, dc is just doing all these movies by themselves that they have yet not even try to touch any of their comic book storylines by any means of acts of desperation, but hell with marvel standards nowdays if batman and robin(98) were released today it would have broken records

Adjusted for inflation is bull****. There were less movies then, no internet, no streaming, endless content to watch, no cinematic video games, 24 hours sports, dvds, home theaters, piracy...etc. No wonder old movies made so much money. Tickets cost less, there was nothing else to watch, and if you missed it....gone...in the wind.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Endgame might not beat it

The problem is is that everybody has seen it now and they don’t want to go back for repeat viewings because there is no Hulk action.

Endgame is a box office failure

:lol :lol

:lol :lol

TFA and Avatar had very low percentage drops for weeks on end due to Christmas vacations and no competition. AEG dropping 57% and 58% is actually quite respectable for a summer blockbuster since oftentimes you'll see drops of high 60's or even 70's.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

:rock :lol

Just read an article detailing the genuine bad blood between Disney and Universal over the theme park rights to Marvel characters. Before Disney bought Marvel in late 2009 Marvel was able to come to an agreement with Universal on TIH. But I think Disney refuses to throw Universal the tiniest bone until Universal agrees to sell back the theme park rights and I can't help but wonder if AEG Professor Hulk is a byproduct of that.

You know what’s another hurdle EG had to overcome that Avatar didn’t which makes the EG box office that much more impressive is that many people are going to say look I don’t feel like watching 21 movies just to go see this one so screw it i’m not going to go see EG where as Avatar had an easy entry point with just a singular single movie experience.

Avatar box office meh

Wut?

Avatar box office is more impressive.

It took 21 movies and 10 years for EG to create the kind of interest and build up that Avatar accomplish with ONE movie and no prior build up. TFA couldn't do it either and they were using 40 year old nostalgia. Avatar wasn't even a known brand or franchise.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Avatar box office meh

Yeah. $2.8 billion with no cultural footprint whatsoever.

I'm guessing it'll stay at #1 as a permanent reminder that that film even exists, lol.

Anyway going back to AEG one thing that occurred to me in remembering how important Uncle Ben's death is to the Spider-Man mythos is that since we didn't get to see that moment for MCU Spidey on screen it's really nice to have his last moments with Tony as a sort of spiritual or symbolic placeholder.

I’m looking at it from the angle of lost customers for EG who never watched any of the previous MCU movies so they didn’t bother with EG.

Avatar was all about the 3D!

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Yeah the three lasting reminders of Avatar since 2009 are:

1. Box office
2. 3D
3. Suicidal weirdos who wanted to be able to live on Pandora

Nothing about the story or characters or even the general quality of the visuals and special effects.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Yup lol

I’m not trying to take anything away from Avatar’s success obviously it’s impressive I was just being a **** with my meh lol

But yeah 3D was a HUGE deal that year Cameron had a reputation as a tech god and it payed off

Blue cats. People remember the blue cats. Ii remember eve when the film came out, all the action figures at Walmart not selling. They're pretty cheap now too. I wonder if they're worth buying just in case the sequels are huge and the old toys become "collectible?"

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Yup lol

Yep and I'll even go so far as to say that it's still a genuinely good movie that is watchable even today.

But with regard to pop cultural impact? Man, just nothing. Nothing at all.

If it had made $400 million domestic/$800 million globally then I think it would have a lot more respect. Then people could say yep Cameron delivers another solid flick. But to have made such staggering amounts of unprecedented profits with *no* lasting iconic characters, drama, or action sequences. It really taints it IMO and even invites certain amounts of ridicule.

I saw a video saying "come on people AEG has the benefit of 11 years of buildup, Avatar made all its money with just one film. Look at IM which started the MCU and didn't make a fraction of Avatar's earnings."

And to that I say well yeah except most non-comic readers had no idea who Iron Man was before 2008 and even though it didn't make as much as Avatar the names "Iron Man," "Tony Stark," "I am Iron Man," etc. were all instantly household names/phrases. Same with the various members of GotG becoming instant icons in 2014 and so on. Movies didn't used to need decades of sequels to become memorable and Marvel reminded everyone of that with just their first few films.

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

Maybe it'll take a sequel to accomplish that cultural impact. Was The Terminator culturally memorable or was it Terminator 2 that it made it huge? Because I don't remember T1 being referenced in movies or tv shows.Only Arnold kept saying "I'll be back" in other movies to make it a thing. I didn't even know about T1 when I went to see T2 in theaters. :lol T2 however, that was big and memorable. It was reference in other movies, cartoons, it had a toy line and a theme park ride. The first film, not so much. Maybe it takes Cameron two cracks at it to make Avatar popular. :lol

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

To this day I thank Avatar for making me a 3D tech junkie because before Avatar my only 3D theatrical viewing was F13th 3 which all things considered was pretty impressive for a low budget horror movie in the 80’s.

Yeah my family did the Universal horror 3D at home in the 70’s which never worked lol

Avatar 3D blew me away I saw it like 6 or 8 x.

The plot is brutal lol

Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)

I expect Cameron to somehow make Avatar 2 a huge event. You just can't doubt or question his track record. Every time he makes a movie, he gets people to watch them, and his last two films were the biggest ever. His last two sequels were T2 and Aliens. I mean come on. I expect Avatar 2 to be innovative in some way as one of the selling points of the film. He did it with Titanic and later with Avatar. I have no idea what JC can do this time, but I don't doubt him. He made a movie with Sam Worthington...the charisma vacuum, the biggest movie ever. JC should be an honorable Avengers and Justice League member for that feat alone. :lol
