Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I think his point stands. No one in SS is a box office draw in and of themselves or even teamed up with each other (as we saw with Will and Margot in Focus.) Paper Towns didn't make a lot, neither did any particular Jared Leto movie and so forth. What interested people were the *characters* they were seeing in those trailers and the finished film.

Any other movie with the same "cast" would in no way be some guaranteed hit.

:goodpost:

by his logic an assemble rom com with this cast would make more then SS :lol

The trailers showed off Batman, Joker, Harley Quinn and Will Smith, those are heavy hitter characters right there. One of the trailers even starts off with name dropping Superman.

This movie is in no way mature, it's obviously aimed at the teenage crowd. Why do you think Letoker is showing up in Rick Ross and Skrillex videos :lol

trailers barely feature batman in a blink and you miss moments, no dialogue from the bat himself. as stated Smith isn't a BO draw like he used to be, Leto isnt a BO draw at all. look at his films #'s.

id rather have Joker in a Rick Ross music video then this again:

was batman 1989 aimed at teenagers too? :cuckoo: all superhero movies are. :rolleyes2

Still not getting the point then. All I originally said was that the cast on its own has contributed a fair bit to the takings. How you've somehow managed to get 'rom com with this cast would make more' from that I'll never know.

SS a sucess for WB as far as financial- if you want a true wtf moment box office flop look at Star Trek Beyond- MIGHT make total US gross of $150 million. It sure cost that and more to make.

I must say, it is pretty crazy when think it about it how Snyder has gotten so many chances with these characters.

Batman being shown at all, already brings in tons of money. Notice I said Joker and Harley not the actors names, those characters interacting with Will Smith in the DC universe equals money. You take a big name, and attach it to a big property and people become very interested.

First of all I don’t see Jack Nicholson in that video, second of all Prince > Rick Ross and Skrillex guy.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

The reviews have pretty much been correct on this one. It was frustratingly mediocre at best, uneven and bad at worst. I think the main fault lies in the villain choice. Once that decision to go supernatural was made, the train went off the rails. The balance between anti-heroes and villains was completely out of balance. It was essentially like putting the TV Defenders (DD, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) against Dormammu, or Batman, Robin, Batgirl and Batwoman against the Anti-Monitor. Something you simply do not do from a power balance and storytelling standpoint.
The movie started off very good and they did a great job of setting up SS as an off-the-books gov't black-ops/wetworks team. But then things jumped off the track with no way to get back on. So let's say instead they had gone up against someone like a terrorist leader, Russian mob boss or drug lord who had been recruiting metas to increase his power base, which threatens not just the surrounding towns but certain sensitive gov't interests. Since the villain would be operating out of a sovereign nation (maybe under the gov't protection) the US would have no jurisdiction. You can't send in the army without an act of Congress, (maybe the first covert SEAL team got wiped out) so instead they drop in the SS squad behind the lines to take them out. If they fail the US has plausible deniability. Sure the stakes are lower than the end of the world, but they should be. That's what the Justice League is for. For me that could have been a much more entertaining movie. You could have still had the super power special effects and cool character and/or creature designs for the villains. And you open up some great opportunities for dialogue. In certain respects the movie could have felt more like Predator or Aliens, with the tension amped up -- which is the template I would have given the filmmakers.
It's so frustrating because this movie could have easily worked. I wonder who made the call on the villain, Ayer or the studio. It seems kind of like a studio call, "let's make it bigger!". I did like the team--especially Harley and Deadshot. I thought I'd like Boomerang as the untrusty comic relief, but instead he was kind of uninteresting and Courtney's delivery was mush-mouthed. I liked Katana's design, and backstory, but she wasn't given enough to do. I also liked the Enchantress character, but powered down and on the team (again could have worked). I don't have a problem with Leto's Joker, however he should have been kept to one or two flashbacks. You really want him to break out in the Batman movie. Instead he's being compared to Ledger, which is apples to oranges at this point. Viola Davis was outstanding as Amanda Waller. I hope she shows up in more DC movies, like the anti-Nick Fury.
I still hope the movie makes enough money so they can do SS2 and hopefully get it right next time.
6/10 with a big ARRGH!

Better Joker and musician than Leto too.

Hot Toys Prince Joker when!?

I’d buy a Prince Joker in a heart beat. I have a feeling Leto Joker will be apart of a lot of spooktacular giveaways this year :lol
