I think for the time, MGS1 controls were great

Think about the lousy tank controls from Resident Evil for example. Looking back now after experiencing the controls of MGS2 i would agree but in context to the time i don't think it's that's fair a criticism. The big thing that annoyed me with controls from MGS1 were trying to choke but flipping them over.

MGS1 just had some of the best areas in gaming especially for 1998. The Gray Fox fight and the corridor before, the Hind D fight and the abseiling, Psycho Mantis fight, Both Sniper Wolf fights, the blast furnace, Raven in the M1 abrams and the Warehouse. First time seeing the underground base with REX, the REX fight and the fist fight with Liquid. The torture, The communications tower. the list is endless :lol

I thought MGS1 was one of the only game sin the series to make you feel like a real super soldier. The game always made everything else seem much bigger than Snake in every sense of the way

I always accidentally flipped soldiers instead of choking them, even today :lol

Every area from MGS1 is legendary.

I've said it once, MGS1 controls haven't aged too well today compared to some other PS1 games. I had issues like flipping soldiers accidentally, sniper rifle (just the idea behind it) and not liking movement too much, just compared to other PS1 games like Spyro, Crash Bandicoot and RE with movement; MGS1 isn't the only game I have issues with control wise on PS1. I believe everyone remembers that rant I got from some fanboy on my video just since I didn't like the controls :lol not saying the controls are terrible however, but I do think there's some issues.

That said, I don't actually have many issues with MGS1, it might just be a few gameplay sequence issues but I really respect the game as a whole, and have come to respect it more since my recent playthroughs and stuff like how we all respect MGs2 more and more as time goes on. One of the things I like most is how there's really a use for everything in the game at a lot of times - stinger missiles (though this is since I liked blowing up soldiers directly in the face :lol ), nikita, claymores, everything. And you're not required to use all of them either, so you can use them at your leisure. You could use the sniper rifle against Sniper Wolf's 2nd bossfight, or go with the Nikita instead. I do think the AI was ahead of the time with moments like how they actually react to your footprints in the snow areas, that's so cool. MGS 2 certainly kept that trend with AI, and items at times too.

I do however hate the fanboys since I think that's where MGS fanboyism really began, and most fanboys can't really take how someone may think the game isn't perfect. It's probably the worst of most 90s games such as Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which even I admit hasn't aged that well but people don't really get too upset over people saying it's not perfect anymore, compared to MGS 1 where people still tend to flip out(Despite OoT actually getting a **** ton of perfect stores for its time and still getting near those scores in re-releases). Some fanboys actually kept me away from the game back when I first tried it in 2008, oh some of those reactions.

MGS3 and MGS1 are both perfect to me, feels fresh and exciting every time to me.

MGS1 is however a lot more important in video game history than MGS3 is.

I do really enjoy Ground Zeroes but it doesn't exactly feel like Metal Gear to me, that being said I much prefer it now that I have the PC version; the PS3 version had far too much lag and FPS drops. MGR:R was the biggest shocker to me though, when it was announced as being set after MGS4 I essentially went ahead and pretended it didn't exist, the demo I found awful and then once I caved and bought the game I did not regret it at all, a lot of character development for Raiden too as well as not interfering or relying on any of the MGS or the Snakes' story too much.

Plus, a note on the whole franchise, next to no glitches. Every other franchise is plagued with them but MGS is made to technical perfection (at least in my plays) :clap

MGS 3 is my favorite in the series. The story, the new mechanics in the game, plus everything Snake (or BB) went through hit a lot closer to home for me. MGS 1 was a close second for me. I don't know why a lot of you guys liked 2. I did not like that one at all. 2 and 4 were my least favorite. I would put PW and Rising above both of them. GZ was too short to be considered a real MGS game so I won't count that one.

MGS2 is the greatest piece of metatextual art ever produced by the videogame industry.

Snatcher is probably my favorite in the series, Metal Gear mk.ii was so cute & adorable, compared to the copycat in MGS4. Also the story is more interesting than post MGS2 games. I'm hoping someone would remake Snatcher into a 3D game, Cyberpunk mod on Crysis seems like the closest but no one knows for sure it'd be ready.

whoa whoa Bane, come on. Putting Rising under PW and GZ? :lol

Also I agree with you on Ghost of Sparta though I would say the series really died with Ascension and it only began with Ghost of Sparta.

Rising is great, but it didn't beat out the poignant moments in those games. I don't really accept what happened with the Boss in Peace Walker as MY canon, but if I take it as it's own thing, there's some really powerful scenes with Big Boss's turmoil over the Boss' choices. When David Hayter wasn't doing Harvey Fierstein impressions, he gave some heart-wrenching performances! I put 300 hours into that game! That's the most I ever played a single game in my life! I can't jump on the hate bandwagon, because I believe it was a great game BUILT FOR THE PSP. I'd argue it was the best portable game, but playing it on the PS3 hurt it for me. It's like giving MGS great controls. A lot of the game works is because of the controls restricting the player, just like the PSP did for Peace Walker. The difficulty was pretty relative to the controls and a mobile gameplay session. MGS is much better, but I hope you understand where I'm getting at.

With Ground Zeroes, I have to play it like I did with MGS, ignoring MG and MG2, and go by what the intro gave me. Otherwise there's a massive tonal dissonance with Paz, but I don't understand the complaints. Do you want keep digging a hole into the goofiness of the end of that game? Anyways, I really felt for Paz in that game. I think the subject matter could have been handled a lot better, but I like the direction the series is going. I love that they gave us the option to save those prisoners. There was no blue and red" system. I felt empowered! I played it for over 30 hours and loved every second!

You could definitely argue Rising is better, but I'll compare it to God of War. I liked Chains of Olympus better than God of War 3. Will I argue it's better? Heck, no! But I'll give you two lines that got to me, and the reason why I kept going back to that game over 3.

"I do not need the aid of the gods! But my path is now clear to me. I will serve them, and they will keep their promise to free me from my past!"

Atlas - "I ask you Spartan. What good is the promise of an Olympian?" Kratos -"It is all I have, Atlas!"

TC Carson delivers those lines with such passion and it really added to Kratos' character. I never hated a villain in a video game until Zeus in God of War 2, and those lines just pumped me up more to take him out. That and along with seeing him push his daughter away. I don't like interactive cut scenes with QTE's or button mashing, but that was very effective. It was great in MGS, but give us arthritis guys a break, Kojima! I'm just kidding!

I like God of War more than the sequel because of the climax. That was genius having you give your life to your family by hugging them, and then fending off clones! God of War 2 still has the greatest line ever- "I AM WHAT THE GODS HAVE MADE ME!"

In regards to what you said about fandom, I was kind of scared to go in the MGS thread here in sideshow. That made me want to get rid of my copies of the games. Then I looked at the covers and there was no way I could do it. I love this franchise too much. No one is going to ruin it for me. I don't think any of these games are perfect. MGS3 is my all time favorite game, and I think there's better games out there. The Demon/Dark Souls (/Bloodbourne?) games are probably the greatest I have ever played. Those aren't perfect either!

I've seen plenty of MGS fans who think Rising is "bad" and some flat out refuse to play it because "robs the honor" of the series. So be it. I'd say have a little fun and never take something too seriously. :lol

Do they not play any other video games? Because if it's not a MGS game, then they should just judge it the same way they would a game from a different series. I think that's an honor abuse! When I think of honor, I think of my family or religion, not a video game! I don't get it. Unfortunately couldn't get into the story elements, but the gameplay was excellent! I think Ninja Gaiden Black is still my favorite action game though!
