Okay, so I got in my new clothes for my Caveman and I changed the sculpt a bit. I lowered his hairline (which looked real funky before) and removed the sculpted unibrow.

Still wished I'd thinned my paints since blown up he's a bit too textured, but I'm happier with this than the earlier shots.

I missed it when you first posted J.

I think he looks really good!!

In a years time you are gonna be making some sick ass customs!!

You are for sure developing your own style. I see some resemblances in the sculpts so far. Are you using the same piece of sculpie or are they all inbred? :monkey5

That caveman could be the missing link. He looks too human to be Neanderthal and almost but not quite too Neanderthal to be human. I have seen humans more Neanderthal than that.

Keep up the good work and those pics a coming.

Thanks guys I appreciate the continued encouragement :duff

I agree with you about the middle ground between caveman and modern... I realized awhile after baking the head that I didn't make the brow ridge or cheekbones pronounced enough. I plan on revisting another caveman in the future... but I figured I'd see this one through.

But all the sculpts are unique unto themselves, but I'm sure some of my own little markers are in there.

:D I like your caveman custom!

Now, just think about what you know how to do, and how to look at a head, that you didn't know before. Your knowledge can only grow.
Keep on working on stuff. You'll see. And have fun. This one looks like he was fun.

Thanks Les, he really was a lot of fun. And I really do plan to keep up with this and seeing what I can crank out :D

I just thought of something for you to sculpt Joseph...
A skull!
Yeah. If you can make a skull look somewhat ananomically right...then....sculpt another head, with the knowledge you glean from studying that skull...
You'll see! Try it! What can it hurt? :D

Been quiet for awhile, but I started working on a Leonidas figure from 300... since it seems to be all the rage these days :lol

Anyway, I took a Hot Toys Muscular Body (from the Drake figure) and mixed him with the NECA 12" talking figure.

I used a dremmel and hand carving tools to free up all of the armor and what not which took a lot longer than I expected (turns out the NECA body is really rubbery and can melt with a dremmel). I salvaged as much of the NECA figure as I could (hands, feet, shin guards, gauntlets, codpiece and belt, weapons and heads) and used the connectors present with the Hot Toys body to fit things together.

I also painted the legs to get rid of the sheen and tried to match the color as best I could for hands feet and face. So far he seems to be going pretty good. I still need to finish the cape, it was just thrown on for effect. I'm gonna have my lady hem it for me and then I weather it. I also need to find some thread for the gauntlets so I can tie them down and of course once its all together add finishing touches.

But anyway, here he is so far...

Awesome job! I purchased a NECA figure to do exactly the same thing... How did you go with the removal of the gaurds? Can you post some close up images of them on the body? I want to see how well they go on the Ht body

Love the artist way you've painted the blood on especially that big big above the side of left knee. look really realistic!

I got mine off of eBay for about $40 shipped... kinda pricey, but that was the best deal I'd come across.

One thing to be aware of is you want to get a lighter-toned body. I first bought a Rambo III and it was way to dark for this figure. But I'm sure I'll find use for it elsewhere. This one is the Drake from Aliens.

Thanks Occ and Grange!

And to answer you question what I did was take a dremmel cutting wheel to cut along side the top of the gaunlet to free it from the arm. The arm is one solid piece of rubber so unfortunately its not a case where you can just peel it off. Then I took carving tools and removed as much of the arm as I could inside of the gauntlet... then I smooted it out using a dremmel sanding drum. I also painted the insides black so you wouldn't see the flesh tone of the rubber. Do all that and you get these:

One of the tools I used:

The armor is placed lower on the forearm to cover the ball-jointed wrist. I wasn't able to carve the hand enough to get the ball to sit in it better than it does now. But you could have the gauntlet further up if you wanted.

On the arm, inner:

And outer:

The shin guards are a bit easier since the leg actually is two pieces with a join below the knee that you can just snap off.

I cut of the connectors for the hands a feet and used a drill to make holes for the ball connectors of the HT body to fit into:

That way you don't loose any of the poseability of the HT's legs

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Quick update...

Got the cape finished (w/fiance sewing it for me) with a wire in the hems on the side and bottom for posing. Also I had to recreate the necklace piece since I lost it off the regular figure :monkey3

Anyway, nearly complete except for some small things and I need to swap out the black strings around his shoulders once I find some leather pieces.

Go for it! Its a fun project... just take you time with the gauntlets and shin guards, its time consuming but doable.

This is SO cool J! I am even thinking of trying it! Great innovation dude!
Now, if the HT body only had his eightpack! (almost does!)

Rock on GB! :rock
