Non-anamorphic?!?

In the words of Vader...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I second that!

Simply infuriating. Another way for George to gouge us a couple years from now.

MF.com's DarthFirst weighs in with some OUT (Original Unaltered Trilogy) DVD info:

• "They're not using the 93 master - there is restoration happening to bring the original theatrical versions up to a level of quality that is expected from Lucasfilm releases."

• "DLTs will be ready around July at the latest for a September release date, which means you can expect concrete news likely sometime in August."

For those who don't know, Darth First is an insider who leaks spoiler info over at MF.com He is reliable. His information is good.

I'm really dumbfounded by this!

Why release a DVD that is non-anamorphic?! If it was any early DVD release, small film or small studio film, then I could/might understand. I wouldn't even have of know what anamorphic meant but becasue of DVDs most people (film geeks) know of anamorphic and now put that at the top of the list above extras (extras were the big thing for me when DVDs first came out).

So why, now DVD has been around for so long and even a new format is coming out, even consider releasing a non-anamorphic DVD!

Shame on you Lucas! No longer will I buy any Star ars related products... :lol

PsychoCenobite :chew

PS. The last sentance did have a small bit of humor in it! :monkey3

Yeah, our little way of sticking it to the man!

BTW - thanks for those links Gruson and others, a very good read.

Well people wanted Star Wars on DVD and they are getting it. They even said they would take them in plain brown paper bags to get them too. But now they want them special and cleaned up and with spiffy packaging and with a special flux capacitor so they could go back to 1977 when they were 3 years old and remember that Han shot first and remember every single little detail on each frame and sound and voice lol.

I think George should have just left them lost in a galaxy far far away.

While I am happy that they are finally going to see the light of day, I think the Lucas film camp has always been stingy with the OT on DVD, just comparing the special features, and this seems like a bit of an F you. I am not surprised by this move, nor their reluctance to make the films anamorphic.

I totaly agree with you. People were asking for them no matter what they looked like as long as they were unedited and now that they are coming out everyone is bitching again. I don't care of they are amamorphic or not since it won't matter on my tv anyway. I am going to buy these and then I will be done with them. I will have the unedited originals, the 2004 Special Editions and thats all I need, and I could care less about any PT Special Editions which I am sure are in the works as I type.

People have wanted them on DVD because the format offers superior video resolution and sound quality. But it appears these so called DVDs will be nothing more than LD transfers that have been available for years.

With all of the bitching, I am glad to see that I will once again be able to see all of the glorious work done by ILM in the pre-digital magic age of rubber masks, matte paintings and plastic models. :chew

Digital effects lose so much of the magic of what had to be created practically at some point. I love the art of the illusion, and ILM were the best!:maul

Seaward, I wouldn't use the word 'bitching' because that implies that they are unwarranted complaints.

Ditto, man.......ditto :maul

I don't need them to be fancy. I don't need special packaging. I don't need any bonus features. They don't need to be cleaned up or remastered. I don't mind the 2.0 sound.

But there's just no excuse for a non-anamorphic widescreen DVD in this day and age. The picture is going to be distorted and stretched out horizontally. Everybody is going to look fat. Circles will become ovals. It's not even worth putting on the market if it isn't formatted properly. I absolutely hate edited pan and scan "full frame" videos, but in this case a "full frame" version would be better than a non-anamorphic widescreen version, which will either have black bars on all four sides of the low res image (sacrificing thousands of precious pixels to unnecessarily wasted black space) or will make every character look like Jabba the Hutt.

(Sorry for using the term "full frame" in this post. Most of us realize that the term "full frame" is misleading, since a "full frame" DVD, when played on a widscreen television or monitor, would not "fill the frame" but would have black bars on the sides. Sorry for any confusion... )

I really can't find it in me to complain about this release. I went SE a looong time ago, and I doubt I'll turn back. I'm getting these, because I'm a compulsive SW freak who loves all the versions of the movies, but when I sit down to watch the OT, it'll probably be the SE's.

CustomMikey, so you are ok with the muppet sing-a-long at Jabba's palace in ROTJ?

I don't know about Customikey, but the prospect of seeing Sy Snootles sing Lapti Nek has me feeling all giddy. The Jedi Rocks song in the 2004 SE always gets a quick fast forward...

Why in the hell would they bother to clean it up and not make it anamorphic?

I can say that out of all the "changes" that where made, the sing-along is the only part that I skip. The rest of the changes do not bother me, they still tell the same stories of star wars. So Han doesnt shoot first, doesnt change his character one bit, his still gets lighter and lighter and the OT goes on. OB1 still dies, Luke and Leia are kissing sibblings, Vader is evil then good, Lando is still black and chugs Colt 45.

And there is just no way on earth a OT purist can defend that monkey eyes Emperor is better than Ian McDiarmid's Emperor in Empire

The OT aren't perfect films. They are entertainment.

I hate the fact that people think their is something wrong with you if you are happy with the super special editions.

I also don't think people should be all up in arms about these new dvds untill they are in the stores with the specs on the package.
