They will most likely serve as both versions for me, if I get a PS3. My PS2 was the only DVD player I had for over 2 years and never had a problem with it. I hope you're right about the 360's though. That's right about where it would be worth it to get both.

So are they THX remasterd then, I thought everyone was saying they were going to be in 2 channel?

I want the special editions (cleaned up pics and sound) just without the spec edition footage.

The original article said something about them being in 2.0 but they may have changed their minds in the two weeks since that came out.

Man, those are some bad photoshopped coves.

They should just throw the original movie posters on them since they are the theatrical cuts.

Also notice that Hans face is a little puffy on the Empire cover lol.

Anyone else think it's a little strange that Han's photo on the ESB cover is actually an image from ANH? Perhaps these aren't the FINAL covers...

It looks like the exact picture thats on the ANH cover just put at a different angle.

I probably wouldn't have noticed it, but you are right ... hmmmm, strange!?

Damn,

I just read at the digital bits that these releases will NOT be anamorphic!!!!

ARRRGHHH!

What a joke. Every release is anamorphic these days.

From The Bits:

We've confirmed something that we'd begun to suspect... and it's probably going to disappoint a lot of you. It certainly disappoints us here at The Bits. Those new DVD editions of the Star Wars films? The original theatrical versions of the films are going to be non-anamorphic (our original post on this indicated otherwise, but we have confirmed that the widescreen versions will be letterboxed only). What this likely means is that Lucasfilm has simply re-purposed the previous non-anamorphic transfers that were done back in 1995 for the last laserdisc and VHS release of the "original" versions of the films. And with that, our enthusiasm for this DVD release has just dropped through the floor. Anamorphic-enhanced versions of the theatrical editions, we'd buy in a heartbeat. But what we're going to get instead is little better than a ported-over laserdisc. In this day and age, releasing a widescreen film without anamorphic enhancement on DVD is just unacceptable. Does Lucasfilm really think fans want those versions of the films on DVD so badly that people just won't care? Yes Virginia, they do. How many versions of these films do you suppose Lucasfilm will try to get fans to buy in high-def over the coming years? And think about it... you just know the studio has to be prepping yet another standard DVD release for next year's 30th Anniversary of the original Star Wars. Do you suppose this means that the theatrical editions won't be included in the super-über box set of all six films? Probably. Ugh.

I imagine that Lucas and Lucasfilms and many fans (including myself) see the original theatrical versions as just a quaint little DVD extra.

Remember that these editions will have the special editions on them as well which is the restored, cleaned up version of the original films. From GL's point of view, why spend money on remastering a little DVD extra when he's already rebuilt the films from the ground up?

Guess he is right then with them being the unaltered theatrical cuts lol.

I will be holding out for HD versions.

That is absolutely ridiculous. I remember how excited I used to get about amamorphic releases- back in 1999. A 16x9 transfer has been standard for years now.

I wish Lucasfilm would have remastered these in HD for an eventual Blu-Ray/HD-DVD release. It looks like that may never happen now. These may be the best versions we ever get.:monkey2

Anamorphic / non-anamorphic has nothing to do with them being unaltered theatrical cuts. This is ****ing ridiculous. We wanted the originals on DVD for a reason. We already have the bootleg laserdisc version. What is this going to offer beyond that?

If you own a widescreen television, then you will know that there is a HUGE difference in quality. Non-anamorphic...it might as well be VHS, it has such a low resolution.
