That is absolutely ridiculous. I remember how excited I used to get about amamorphic releases- back in 1999. A 16x9 transfer has been standard for years now.

I wish Lucasfilm would have remastered these in HD for an eventual Blu-Ray/HD-DVD release. It looks like that may never happen now. These may be the best versions we ever get.:monkey2

If Lucas hates these originals and thinks they aren't profitable, then I don't see why he can't sell the original transfers to a movie studio that actually cares and can have them done right.

So are they THX remasterd then, I thought everyone was saying they were going to be in 2 channel?

I want the special editions (cleaned up pics and sound) just without the spec edition footage.

PLEASE don't make them in anything other than 2.0. As I said earlier, the 5.1 mix is quite different and has many extra foley effects.

THX mastering has nothing to do with the sound channels. It simply means getting the best quality out of the original master. Best quality in theory at least- the THX seal hasn't meant a damn thing since the laserdisc days. They put out a few REALLY crappy transfers with some of the first DVD's.

If there is a THX logo at the beginning of these LD ports, that will be hilarious.

So does anyone else think it is appropriate to re-name the thread title now!? :emperor :emperor :emperor :emperor :emperor :emperor :monkey4

Listen to the fans ..... :rotfl

If you own a widescreen television, then you will know that there is a HUGE difference in quality. Non-anamorphic...it might as well be VHS, it has such a low resolution.

Yea, I own a 50" widesceen and know the difference. Just doesnt matter that much to me, I've already bought the box set of super SE's (and am happy with them) and won't bother with buying Star Wars DVD's again unless they are HD. If the quality isnt there, I'll pass on those untill the next go around of releases comes.

Thanks GL, also yes I agree.

These DVDs won't be any better than the LD to DVD transfers people have been doing for years now. Lucas really had a chance to win over a lot of of disgruntled fans by releasing the original trilogy on DVD, but he's even found a way to screw that up! I certainly won't be throwing any cash his way this time around. Thanks for nothing, George. :emperor

RE: Anamorphic VS Widescreen

Anamorphic / non-anamorphic has nothing to do with them being unaltered theatrical cuts. This is ****ing ridiculous. We wanted the originals on DVD for a reason. We already have the bootleg laserdisc version. What is this going to offer beyond that?

Greetings!
Not really…DVD is digital, VHS is analog;)
There is not a difference in the resolution of widescreen VS anamorphic, just how the image is manipulated by the DVD player to fill the TV screen.
On my 50 inch plasma, I tend to do as little processing or stretching as possible. If you want the purest image, IMHO, the widescreen version is just that. Not lower resolution. In fact, I am not a big fan of anamorphic, as it forces the image to fill the screen by varying amounts (depending on original aspect ratio of the films) and alters the image from the director’s original ratio.
If you can stand some black bars, which are more theatrical, again IMHO, you are getting the true representation of the film.
I have included a link that explains the process, although the author claims the anamorphic is better, I disagree for the above stated reasons. All DVD’s are mastered in 420 standard resolution. A DVD can be "mastered" in High Def (720), but will arrive on your DVD at 480!

This link explains it better.

If you do have a widescreen TV, anamorphic titles will always look better and use more resolution.

Sorry Snow, you're wrong on this and crazy if you think a non-anamorphic DVD is better.

No comparison.

If you take a look at the actual resolution of a DVD video, it's allways 720x480, not matter if it's wide screen or full screen. If it's wide screen, the image is stretched up a bit, then once it's played the image is squashed vertically to be the right aspect ratio. For full screen, the image is squashed vertically to fit into 720x480 and then is stretched to fit the screen when played. What this means is that widescreen will give you more of the picture at a larger resolution. And once High Definition DVD's come out it'll be even better.

We need a smiley of a hippie being cut in half by Vader...

huhuh... Whoa, that would be cool! (said in pseudo-Beavis voice)

This man speaks the truth, they pulled this crap on the Abyss a few years back.

I recommend we all call Lucasfilm and let them know how we feel about this.

Their number is 415-623-1000

I know, it probably will not make a difference but I am going to try and at least get some answers.

Well, I was directed to their PR department and just sent them a very detailed email to them.

Hopefully they can at least deny or confirm if they are anamorphic or not....
