We must be watching two different shows.... Gordon is the protagonist in this show, although he has not gone up against super villains at their prime, only young teenager versions of them..... Also Bruce Wayne has only been in a few episodes with little impact on the overall story, so your statement that they can't tell a story without Batman is false. Joker being caught as a teen is a far cry from him not being taken more seriously when he becomes older and more sadistic.... but if you want to get technical about it then the whole Batman Universe is a joke because Batman just keeps catching the same villains over and over and over and over and over again and they keep escaping Arkham Asylum over and over and over again.... Now that's hard to take seriously :)

BTW, I just read that Gotham got renewed for a second season.... Woot !!!

I get what you're saying, and I can understand why some people like it, but it just feels unbalanced to me. I'm not saying never do the villains, but they could hold back a bit, in some cases. The whole Mario Pepper/ Little Orphan Ivy thing, for example. There's really nothing about her that says Poison Ivy other than the fact that she's a redhead; hell, their real names aren't even the same. With that being said, I'm not saying to stop using characters like that, but, if they're going to, it might be wise to refrain from having her pop up in cameos until they have something worthwhile to say about her. She's honestly one of my pet peeves, if only because her cameos have to be some of the stupidest scenarios on the show.

As for the argument that Batman keeps catching villains over and over and over again, Batman refuses to kill, while Gordon and his men are authorized to use lethal force to apprehend suspects. I'm going to keep watching, though, because I really do want it to get better, and I'm hoping that happens in season 2. Plus, the first season still isn't over yet, and like I said, I haven't completely disliked it, it's just that some episodes are so vastly different that it often feels like I'm watching two different shows, and that disconnect really causes me to question whether it's worth my time or not.

My whole problem with the show is the age gap between the eventual batman and the eventual Penguin, Riddler and the rest. By the time Bruce becomes Batman Penguin and Riddler will be middle aged. The site of a young verile Batman beating up on someone that much older than him seems wrong.

I never ever imagined Batman taking on Penguin, Riddler or even Joker hand to hand anyways cause they were not trained in that art. They are more the manipulator type with their devious minds with henchmens that do the dirty work.

I don't know the actual ages of Penguin and Riddler but I would say they are in their early 20's, Joker is probably about 17 or 18.... Given Bruce is 14 were only looking at 4-10 year age difference between him and his arch nemesis.

I can't get into this show like I hoped I'd be able to when it started. I think they're throwing too much in at once--too many storylines and way too many villains. It's almost like they thought the entire Batman universe had to be introduced in the first season because they weren't going to make it to a second. The show should have been about Gordon and the GCPD dealing with the mob trying to control Gotham. I wish they had never introduced Fish--just let Falcone and Maroni go at it with Penguin in the middle. Every now and then they could throw a little Easter Egg so everyone can go "Oh, that's so-and-so!" and maybe a Batman villain like Zsasz used by one of the mob families as an over-arching villain for the entire season.

I guess in the end I wish it was written better and overall a tighter show--I don't need to be beaten over the head with references. I'll keep watching it and keep hoping it gets better (like I did with Agents of SHIELD, which did) but it's definitely not a show I need to watch every week. It's DVR fodder for now and I'll get to it when I get to it.

Gotta give a little props to someone that plucks their own eye out.

How do you mean? I must've missed something.

Since I've never read the comics, so I'm good. There's a couple of running stories plus the cops doing their thing with the criminals that pop up. Most of the characters they're showing probably may never occur again or at least any time soon.

The storyline that bothers me the most is Gordon's ex-girlfriend. She can disappear for all I care.

Agreed. Barbara for me has always been the worst part of this whole show. I was thrilled when she left and am annoyed with her return.

Yea, people are complaining about how they hate her - but I'm pretty sure that's the point. I don't like her either, but I think they have something interesting planned.

Really liked this week's episode, and at least twice I was surprised by where they went with the storyline. I can't understand the complaints about too many characters or story lines - if you expected Castle or NCIS, that's not what this is. The show is called Gotham, not Gordon, or Batman, or Penguin. The variety of characters and stories allow for more surprises.

I also love the ties to the Burton universe. Obviously Selina is a Pfieffer look alike, but she has the attitude down as well. And Joker? Yea, that was heavy on the Nicholson, although there was a darker edge in there as well.

I like that they tie things together over the course of many shows too, like the Doll Maker coming back around as a major plot point a dozen episodes later. That will keep this show interesting over seasons, rather than some simple villain of the week motif.
