I was excited to see this after the response I saw on this forum. Man, you guys really get excited over anything. The movie was decent, but it dragged until the kiss in space. The best parts were when the team was interacting and when the music was playing but there was way too much mindless action where you knew it was going to work out and none of the main characters were going to go out. It was alright.

Haha what did you expect from this kind of movie, man? It was gonna be fun and of course you knew none of the main characters were gonna go out. I just think you had to know exactly what you were gonna walk into.

Exactly, it's not like you walked into Avengers thinking one of them would die. With these kind of movies you know what your getting and how it will end, so it's really about whether or not you enjoyed the trip.

Well I think I kind of know where kia is coming from. Some folks are acting like this movie is the greatest comic movie ever made, or certainly near the top of that list, and is a perfectly executed attempt at blending action/comedy/drama. And frankly, it's not that to me, though it has its moments that hint at what it could be. It does what it does very well, but at the same time, it doesn't quite reach the level of achievement that it felt capable of IMO. And while you might know deep down characters aren't going to die, the film's tone doesn't have to reinforce that, by being a bit too light and carefree. And perhaps GOTG doesn't focus quite enough on the gravity of what's going on to achieve that, particularly when you have dancing Quill and WB cartoon character Ronan interacting in the final confrontation (even though I liked that scene quite a bit for what it was). I don't feel it needed to be heavier personally (Gunn didn't seem to make that a goal), but at the same time, that kind of thing holds it back from moving from "really good" to potentially "great," because it doesn't feel as genuine and rich as it could have been because of it.

If we are counting all movies that we've seen than my list goes as:
1) HTTYD2
2) Guardians of the Galaxy
3) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
4) X Men Days of Future Past
5) Godzilla
6) Winter Soldier
7) Amazing Spider-Man 2
8) Neighbors
9) Transformers

Still havent seen TMNT.

But I will say that on repeat viewings, at least for me, How to Train Your Dragon 2 was just as good as the first time watching it. While I enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy and Godzilla more than my first time watching them.

amazing Spider-Man, which I loved initially, was brought down. And the climax to Winter Soldier just barely held my attention the second go around. Still loved the beginning of that film though.

Still have to see Apes and DoFP again.

DOFP
GOTG
TWS
DOTPOTA
ASM2

Kara pretty much summed up how I felt about Guardians.

So what you're saying is that The Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr. Zhivago, Gone with the Wind, The Ten Commendments, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather and the Exorcist would've been held back with a dance off ending?

A dance off ending would have vastly improved any one of those movies :lecture

I agree. I think a movie like this could be light and carefree but I would've liked it to be heavier in parts. That definitely would've upped it a notch. It's a really good movie but it could've been friggin' great if it was a little more powerful and a little less fun

"This comic book film is too fun, light and whimsical. Not serious enough."

"This comic book movie is too drab, dark, and brooding. Not lighthearted enough."

You will travel far, my little Kal-El. But we will never leave you... even in the face of our death. The richness of our lives shall be yours. All that I have, all that I've learned, everything I feel... all this, and more, I... I bequeath you, my son.

YO DJ, gimme a beat!

I thought the movie had a perfect balance of light-hearted and seriousness.

I don't subscribe to the idea that seriousness automatically = quality or 'better'. Or that it means better characters or better writing. I think you should know your characters first and foremost, then your story, and go with a tone that fits.

I love that Guardians made me laugh so hard so many times, but that it also had moments that moved me. Being able to laugh as well as feel sad tends to make me feel even more for characters, to be honest. Those humorous moments tend to add to the sad moments for me, makes them work even better.

Quill singing/dancing to distract Ronan fit his character perfectly. And it only made me love the character even more.
