Trust me I hear your points and believe me I wish they would go back to those prices but I know the reality of this hobby and embrace it. Unfortunately there are a lot more collectors who don't care about price than there are average joes who won't be able to afford these new price points. So its either get what you want or get out of the game. I know its a bit harsh but blaming people who buy figures isn't the solution either. Just saying.
I know right...
Same dilemma, I opted out. In the end, it's just not worth it.
I've shown the final product pics to friends who appreciated my Hot Toys collection.
They told me I'm better off buying a barbie doll or a hasbro fig than this.
Hoping for a BW from Cap 2 with sculpted hair.
Except those who pay $500 for a basic (non-gantry/monger) Iron Man HT figure in evilbay.
Or people who pay $800 to $1500 for one custom figure. I thought I was crazy.
Yes and no. A company is going to charge whatever they can get away with. The mentality goes something like this
They paid 150$ for that last one, lets go up to 200$
Damn, at 200$ we still sold everything, lets try 250$ next.
250$ sold? 300$ next
And so on, and so on, and so on, until they hit a point where they stop selling, and drop it back a little bit, or simply bust as a company.
As an example, my sister works in hollywood, for a fashion designer. they buy outfits, and fabrics from sellers in china for 20-40 $, and then sell them for 2000$-4000$ dollars. and no, that's NOT a typo. 2-4 thousand, for an item they paid less than 50$ for. they do this, Because they can. Just like any other business. And it's not that her company is crooked. she has worked for several different design studios over the past decade, and they ALL do this.
Short version, if your customer base has more money than sense, you're going to make alot of money.
Yes, I get that it's a expensive hobby, I get that prices will always go up, BUT what we, as consumers can effect is how much they go up, and how fast.
People buying aftermarket at INSANE prices dosn't help much either, as we've seen HT will do "reissues" of a figure to get some of that secondary market money.
Yes, in many cases, these reissues are superior to the original release. However, if you think they went back and re-did the figure ONLY to improve on the original, you're fooling yourself.
And it's quite easy to stay in the game, even at higher prices. MOST of the older figures ( Most, not all. I'm looking at you Blade, and wolverine) can be had off the secondary market for reasonable prices, as people dump their older ones to get the shiny new toys as they come out. Saw a Thor and an Odin for 120 and 100$ respectively in the past few weeks.
Some of these hold value, but I'm beginning to notice a trend where HT figures are starting to not hold as much Value on the SM as they used to.
Nature of the beast I suppose

Tony, what does the scouter say?
