If you phone fedex before it ships you can clear customs yourself and save on the brokerage fee. In Winnipeg the customs office is right across the street from Fedex so it only takes an extra couple minutes.

It's eye-opening to see all these added "struggles" in securing these toys... I live like 20 minutes away from the Sylmar, CA UPS facility my Hot Toys always come through, I usually get tracking info late in the evening, and I almost always receive the item next day. I thought they just had a good system, but I guess I'm a lot luckier than I realized...

That being said, after months of debate, after getting the "Processing Soon" email on Star-Lord, I decided to finally cancel my regular version and wait to find an exclusive version aftermarket. Can't live without that orb. To those of you cancelling/selling your exclusives, from me and others in the same boat, thank you!

Also, I'm new here. Just discovered this site about a month ago. Everyone's commentary has been very interesting to me, as a new collector. Started my Hot Toys collection at SDCC14 with IM Mark 1 (2.0). Decided to go MCU-only. I now have 11, with many more pre-ordered, but nowhere yet to put them in my one-bedroom apartment, so all 11 are still in their brown shippers, un-opened. Looking forward to the day when I have enough space and a complete-enough collection to finally take the plunge and open them up!

Welcome to the forum. Am I understanding you right; that you have 11 Hot Toys and have never taken any of them out of the shipper box? Not even a couple to have out on display?

Not a very smart move. You, at the very least, should open them up to inspect the items. Hot Toys is not without flaws. You could wait years, open one and the batteries have corroded the contact points. Or the LEDs just simply don't work. You could be missing parts, have damaged parts or shoddy paint work. All very possible with these collectibles. While some items might be fairly easy to find with a little stick-to-it-ness, others may simply be impossible to obtain.

I would open them to inspect then put them away. I too have no room to display my stuff so I unbox them, check lights, remove any batteries, take pics to share with my brother and then I re-box them.

I don't get the idea of keeping them in the box. This things are too good looking to hide away! I suppose I makes sense to rotate if you have a large collection though.

The issues you brought up have weighed on my conscience since I started my collection. However, I'd say the greater weight is that of my financial capacity to "afford" these toys. I'm 24 (today, actually. It's my birthday!) and I have a full-time, hourly job. I've been able to pay for all of them, to this point, obviously, but I'm trying to delay the decision as to whether or not it was responsible of me to spend all this money on these toys. If I end up on the street with all my Hot Toys, I'd rather have them in "mint" condition so I might recoup some of my losses.. lol

The idea is, someday, I'll either need the money back or I'll have a big enough place to set up my big collection of toys I've collected over a good span of time. I already have lots of ideas in my head for how I want to set them up!

That being said, your concerns definitely aren't making that choice easier. :thud:

I agree, but my house is in the renovation process, section by section, room by room so having collectibles out with drywall dust = bad idea

I understand that but I don't think you would be losing much perceived value by opening them up...at least with Hot Toys. Now if these were smaller figures, there could be huge re-sale issues. But Hot Toys so far have maintained their value open or mint in mint shipper...you'd get your cash back regardless. But if you have a figure that is sealed up with batteries, you sell it at a premium only to have the buyer open it to realize all the components are corroded through and there's paint damage, you will have a very unhappy buyer which could lead to headaches.

At least open the ones with batteries and protect them from the inevitable.

...and welcome to the board:welcome1:

Opening them for inspection only will not greatly diminish the value; we are talking a few dollars. Leaving them MISB and potentially having broken parts, corroded batteries etc. can lead to a much greater monetary loss. In my eyes, it is certainly not worth it to keep them closed.

Yes, and yes. I've thought about this dozens of times, though I haven't had first-hand experience with the diminished (or not) resale value once opened. In the case that any of those issues (corroded batteries, broken parts, etc.) were relevant, what is Sideshow's policy on such things?

I could be headed towards a more exciting birthday celebration than I anticipated... :panic:

I am pretty sure their return policy is 30 days. So if you take two months to open a figure and it is broken, then you are basically out of luck

If you go back and review sold items on eBay you'll notice that there isn't much price difference, if any, for sealed or previously displayed items so long as it's still in great shape and comes with everything.
