Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I doubt it was a "gag"... Giger himself sculpted that thing, so it's meant to be there. It is' however, well known that Scott told him (Giger) that an earlier version with exposed "eyes" wasn't really doing it for him (Scott), so it was decided to go with the translucent dome to cover the eyes.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I think the problem is a lot of manufacturers probably are proud of the work they put into the skull or that they made the effort to put the work in, they want it all to be seen rather than do a fair amount of work and then mask it with fogging and such so you only detect a slight glimpse at it. I can understand being bummed about your detail work not being seen, but think of Giger, how many people would truly know the work he put into the design of the Alien if it weren't for behind the scenes foot, books and the internet. Just watching the movie, you never see in ALIEN or ALIENS all the fine details of his design, beautiful work that a large amount of the world who watch those movies and appreciate them will never know.

And all of that work so that each company/sculptor can ignore it and make their own "artistic" interpretation... :lol

I wonder which way Giger goes, no part in owning any pieces based on the Alien, or a collector. Some designers like the work and keep mementos from the job, but don't care for seeing it much past that, others do enjoy seeing their work turned into toys and all.

Isn't anyone here old enough to remember Alien when it first came out?

I was 7 in 1979 and saw the movie a couple years later. But I grew up with the Kenner Alien, so perhaps that has slanted my perspective a bit. But in watching all the (glorious) extras on the DVD, Giger's and Rambaldi's sculptures seem to feature the skull pretty prominently. It is my opinion that the lighting in the film made it difficult to see beneath the dome.

Plus, there's pics like these:

That's true, as you can see in Giger's original drawings that inspired the alien.

And of course Giger did sculpt the alien originally, and I believed used the skull so he could make the jaw which was what the model makers used as well. But the eyes were eliminated well into preproduction so the use of the skull became an homage to Giger, and just a little nasty thing to have in there. At least that's what was said in 1979. The alien wasn't meant to have a human skull as it's "face"...or eyes.

Awesome pics! Thanks dude.
BTW, looking at the high res pics Jeff posted, I just noticed that Mr. Tsang actually sculpted veins into the alien's arms... WTF?

Awesome pics! Thanks dude.

My pleasure. Sure looks like a skull to me. Of course there are so many other photos where you cannot see it. I'm assuming there was more than one suit, and perhaps multiple domes of varying translucency used.

Bottom line, there is reference material of the skull. If you're gonna do it, do it right.

Which picture, I'm not seeing veins on the arms.

This eye topic is really starting to drive me nuts. Isn't anyone here old enough to remember Alien when it first came out? No? Didn't think so.

I was 13 when ALIEN came out. It was the first "R" rated movie I saw in the theater. I'm old. :( :lol

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Blade Runner was my first "R".

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I was 20 when Alien came out; what does that make me(answer VERY carefully)?...PS

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I wasn't even born until 4 years after ALIEN :lol.

Wow, didn't think I'd be older than you. Your posts are always intelligent and objective, I never see you moan about anything or get indignant over a flaw in these action figures we collect - thus I've considered you to be more mature than myself - which you probably are, just not actually older. :monkey1

Anyway...I hate Hot toys for giving us this stupid piece of carp Alien that looks nothing like in the film! How dare they; and if they think they're getting my money for it they've another thing coming. Its total disrespect for the deserving fans of Alien and to hell with them and their "artisticly interpreting" backsides! Yes I'm joking...half anyway, I still think it could've been better :D

The skull was always there. Always. They just ditched it in Aliens, and has been gone since.

The Alien was ment to have a skull. Not eyes. Just a skull.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Right. When I say "eyes", I really mean eye sockets.

The whole skull thing was just a backstage gag for Giger who loves skulls. The model makers just stuck it in there for fun. It was never suppose to be the alien's "skull" or anything. It's like putting R2 and 3PO hieroglyphics on the temple walls in "Raiders". It's just a thing moviemakers do.

Uh...yeah...some of us ARE old enough to have been around for it.
You shouldn't answer your own questions...makes ya look silly when you turn out to be wrong.

And I'm not sure where you got your info on this "skull" issue...but you couldn't be more wrong. Giger ALWAYS meant for the skull to be there.

No, the skull wasn't meant to be it's eyes...but it was DEFINATELY meant to be there. Not a "gag" or just "stuck in there" at all.
