Meh, who cares. As long as it's on the figure.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Uh...yeah...some of us ARE old enough to have been around for it.
You shouldn't answer your own questions...makes ya look silly when you turn out to be wrong.

And I'm not sure where you got your info on this "skull" issue...but you couldn't be more wrong. Giger ALWAYS meant for the skull to be there.

No, the skull wasn't meant to be it's eyes...but it was DEFINATELY meant to be there. Not a "gag" or just "stuck in there" at all.

Am I suppose to take your word for it?

I was a voracious Alien fan in the summer of '79 and I read just about everything I could get my hands on about it. I understood that the skull was not intended to be part of the alien biology. It was part of the 'prop' of the costume. Meaning if they had a scene in the movie where Ripley hacked open the head a human skull would not have fallen out. But for some reason, over the years, perhaps because of all the photos of the sculpt, that the skull ended up being considered part of the alien... not just part of the design. That was my point. That it wasn't, in the original film, suppose to have a skull under there. That's why they hid it in the movie.

And just so you know, I look silly whether I'm wrong or not :D

I think both sides are right here. Clearly the Alien is supposed to have the shiny dome as it's head, but in terms of the physical prop (and the original design pre-production) there is a skull underneath the dome.

But we're not really supposed to see it.

And that's why I'll be darkening my dome to give just a hint of the dome if the lighting is right. Most of the time though it should look like a big head, with teeth. And thats what was so scary about it first time round :rock

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

The eye sockets are fixed, but doesn't mean how the figure looks is fixed for people.

Yes, I should have said "One of the only things..."

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I was 12 when it came out. I went to see either Star Trek TMP or The Black Hole... I can't actually remember, and when it was finished I snuck in the other screen room and watched ALIEN.
I scared 7 colours of crap out'a me, but like SW left an image branded into my brain ever since!
I guess the dome could do with being more milky, but I like to see glimpses of the skull detail beneath, so- comme ci comme ça!

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I was thinking - there are some talented people on here, and also a great wealth of knowledge about the construction and design of the Alien prop in its various forms. There are people on here who do full human head sculpts, which must be much harder to do than, well you can probably guess where I'm going with this...

Has anyone ever attempted a Giger Alien head sculpt, from scratch?

So, no, you don't need to take my word for it.

Now, I guess in all of your voracious reading, you missed one...

From "GIGER'S ALIEN" (in Giger's own words)...

"The eye section of the front view (plate 371...which is one of the earlier concept drawings of the Alien WITH EYES) is too suggestive of motor-cyclist's goggles. It has to be replaced by a dark, semi-transparent cranium, stretching back over the whole cranium and SHOWING THE EYE-HOLES IN THE SKULL"

So, you're wrong. Giger always had the skull in mind and for it to be seen.
This was not put there by anyone else. It was part of the Alien biology.

But, please...feel free to quote any source you have that confirms or validates your opinion.

Keep editing your post .P, maybe you'll come up with something that makes sense eventually.

;)

no, i'd better delete it :)
it was meant to make somebody thinking, not blinking.

If I can't quote any source does that make me wrong?

I said, it was my understanding that the alien, in the movie, was not intended to have a human skull. I did say before that Giger's original artwotk did have the eyes. Of course it did. Very alien-like skull eyes. But for the movie, which is really my frame of reference because we're talking about the alien from the movie "Alien" not the alien inspiration from Giger's work, I understood that it (the alien) was not meant to have a human skull underneath.

I couldn't tell you where I read that 30 years ago -- Starlog or the movie book or who knows how many mags I read back then. All I know is that's what I remember as being the intent back then. I didn't make it up, I wanted to know. Back then, the whole phallic imagery of the alien -- the sex and death stuff -- was the big topic of conversation. But as we all know, history can be altered as new generations take different points-of-view. I don't know what the official alien biology canon is now, but again that has changed with the Alien franchise many times over, starting with Cameron's Queen...

Don't worry man, I know what you were trying to say. And I agree, I don't think we should be able to (clearly) see the eye sockets.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Charming as ever P.

I just wanted to chime in to say that you guys are frickin' awesome.
See, that's the thing the HT and other companies are starting to realize. Fans are serious, they really know they're stuff, they've done their research and collected writings and tons of ref pics over the years. Some are even sculptors and prop makers themselves as well. You can't just pass off any sculpt, people notice every little detail, and you'll hear about it.

It's cool that people are so passionate about they're collectibles and hobbies.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Fans are serious
no, they simply have eyes. some of them. there is nothing serious in seeing difference between two things. it's just strange why figure companies promise a movie figure and give just some of their own fantasy.

Man, I wish HT had actually realized it and commissioned Joseph Tsang to make an accurate Giger alien...

Who knows, maybe next year they will start the Alien DX line and re-release all of the aliens with accurate sculpts and the seamless rubber-covered bodies! :lol

I saw at HLJ that the alien is due in december. Suppose that means it'll show up in the States in January/February? I'm looking forward to seeing in-hand pics of this one, but I don't think I'll pre-order it.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Well, for the price they ask, we should be serious. We can debate Ridley Scott's intentions until we're blue in the face. The fact is, there should be a skull in there, with some degree of visibility, and it should not look like it does in the proto.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

You know, I think sometimes we give the people responsible for these creatures too much credit in terms of consistency. I imagine it went something like this:

Giger: "I have given ze Alien a heeuman skull, zo it is partly organische, but allzo it has all zese pipes und so weiter, which is what I call Bio-mechanische"

Ridley: "Hmmmm. Tell you what. Why don't we put a semi transparent cowl over it, so that you can't really tell where its eyes are, or how it sees?"

Giger: "Sassen frassen rassen...:banghead"

...and that was about the sum total of the thought that went into it. :banana

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

As far as the figure goes, it's really irrelevant why the skull is there, who put it there, and what the intended anatomy of the creature is.

What's relevant is how the dome and skull combination played out visually on film, and in the movie, the skull was very muted and subtle, where 90% of collectibles make it prominent and easily seen.

:lol

That's probably not far from the truth.

I am curious though, as this debate with sabres has my mind interested in other's POVs on this: for those who believe the skull is part of the alien biology, do you believe that the sockets are how the alien sees? Are those his 'eyes'?

I always believed -- again from my reading way back when -- that the whole slimy dome was a sensor type thing, that there was no specific sight mechanism, just a sonar/whatever/sensing area that could 'view' in all directions. And I always thought that was very cool and...alien.

I'm curious what others believe in terms of how the alien 'sees'.

The TRUTH, plain and simple!
