Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I don't know. The Medicom Alien looks pretty weak to me.

I personally think that the Medicom Alien is alot more accurate
than the HT alien. The only thing that lets it down is the scale
and that's the only reason why I didnt buy one.
I do however like the HT alien but I cant bring myself to buy
it because the head imo just doesnt represent the 1979 Alien or
any alien seen on film for that matter.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I think it looks bad ass....The only thing that I hate about it is the ovale eyes, they should be round. This detract a lot from the figure,I think.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I just looked at the pics for the first time and imo it looks great! The details are awesome.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Argueing over protos is just a waste of time. I'd rather see the final production, and comment bout it then. As with the case of connor, didn't HT fixed it as soon as they realized ppl weren't satisfied?

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I think with any of these figures, it's a roll of the dice based on composition of the rubber or other soft materials, storage conditions, light exposure. I know people that have had figures I own break down and I've got no signs of a problem. I've yet to see a consistent patter that can be used to understand the chances of your figure breaking down. The only common problem I know of is paint flaking off the ALIENS warrior figures, seems like a lot of people had that and the AVP one doesn't look painted so my guess is that was a case of painting something that paint won't adhere well too, which could be the upside of this Alien being made of PVC, the detail of paint work on the proto looks great but my first thought was that it'll likely flake off like the Aliens figure, but PVC might take better and last.

I've got the AVPR Alien, Predalien, Dallas and "Kane". I would say that the soft components are manufactured from silicon or polyurethane, they don't exhibit the characteristics of vinyl. That's a good thing for long term stability, but it may be problematic for the paint compounds they've used to detail them. I think the problems people are reporting are being created because the "rubber" is more flexible than the paint, stretching the rubber causes the paint to de-adhere and slip -- further flexing causes the paint to spilt, crack and peal etc. Common household cleaners will also have a detrimental affect on the paint etc.

I'll bet that the "Big Chap" will be made from the same materials as the AVPR/Nostromo figs. I hope they are sourcing their raw materials from US (Dupont) or European sources, raw Chinese compounds are netoriously unstable because of chemical quality and production issues etc.

I store all my HTs in Detolf cabinets sealed with clear inch wide 3M tape. I've sealed all the joins on the entire cabinet and even used a bead of aerospace grade (non acidic) RTV around the rebates for the glass. When I press on the door slightly (when it's taped closed) you can feel the "suction" created when the air slowly re-enters the cabinet. I don't have to worry about dust or airborne contaminants. When I open the cabinet everything smells as fresh as the day I opened the box-- not a hint of deterioration.

I think the secret to keeping figures new it to always thoroughly wash your hand before handling them.

Keep them stored in as" inert" environment as you can. Keeping them sealed in inert glass/metal type cases. Not cases or displays that have lacquered of polished shelves - they will cause chemical interactions with the paint and "rubber" over time.

Don't store your cabinets or figures in direct sunlight or UV sources (unshielded fluorescent, incandescent, halogen etc).

Keep the temperature and humidly low and stable as possible. Don't have fan heaters or heating vests blowing on or near your cabinets.

Don't pose "soft skin" type figures in poses that stretch the skin around the elbows, knee joint etc. Stretching the skin around a joint once is enough to ruin the paint.

Customizers won't like me for saying this, but using paint or any other solvent based product will irreversibly alter the original chemical composition of the factory materials and paint etc. This will have all sorts of unpredictable effects over time -- none of them good ones.

Chemically speaking, the figures are as good as they will ever be when they leave the factory.

That sweet "new" smell when you get them out of the box is actually toxic, minimising you exposure to it is the best solution if you want to have children, and live a long life.

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

I'll bet that any "inaccuracy's" in the sculpt are due to long term copyright issues. The owners are probably concerned about "giving" away a nearly perfect 3D model of their "bread earner". It potential opens the door to all sorts of unlicensed products. All HTs models have a certain "signature" about the sculpt that watermarks it from others.

I like the sculpt of the figure. I think it will look much better when I have it in my hand. It seems to be a culmination of all of the props used. Giger could have stopped it if he wanted, too. I presume he would have had to approve the design. I think it's the Alien the Geiger intended with the limitations of having a human inside a costume.

Props used in movies aren't necessarily perfect representations of the character, but are part of a team of props used to create and overall effect that looks good on screen, and then finally tries to stay faithful to the artists intent. Photos of the props used in the movie don't definitively prove that Hot Toys got it wrong.

Trying to interpret and object solely from photos can be misleading. Hot Toys has created the sculpt for a perfectly valid reason, not because they can't sculpt. IMHO.

It's prety amazing that we're getting these figures for the prices we do. Can you imagine how much these amazing little posible pieces of 3D art would cost if they were manufactured in the US etc. The labor costs associated with production would put them in the $1000.+ range.

Enjoy Hot Toys while you can, I can't imagine them being around in the next decade or so.

And interesting theory, but plenty of companies have gotten the sculpt work right, so it's not as though there's any rights to using it, and that's what paying for a license to make products based on entitles you too. There's no conspiracy to keep the Alien design locked away, FOX owns the rights, Hot Toys paid for the rights to make a product, they just didn't get it right for some reason.

Does FOX own the exclusive rights to the Alien design? That's news to me...

Based on the growth rate of the Alien in the movie, he would have been a very "old chap" towards the end of the movie... He was bound to be a little misshapen and jowly by that point... :D

Maybe Hot Toys is giving us the "Forever Young" best of the "Golden Years" version to remember the "Big Chap" by?

We all know that Hot Toys have the talent to "mass" produce perfect sculpts.

Funny And true. It's also carcinogenic and very bad for your liver function. I read a thread the other day where they were talking about dissolving plastic knives and forks in MEK to make liquid plastic for modelling... And people wonder why they develope cancer and have children with birth defects etc.:duh

:rotfl I think you'de get a big surprised by the premium your insurance company would charge you. Insuring people to inhale known carcinogens is something you would have to pay up big to get the extra liability/ indemnity coverage.

Indeed we all do, we also know historically, their Aliens have artistic liberties taken with the designs, some more small like the Big Chap (but for the skull), and others more extreme like the Aliens warrrior.

Woah Woah WOAH! So you're saying that smelling my Hot Toys boxes will = Great Retardation?

Re: UPDATED! Hot Toys - MMS 106 - Alien - BIG CHAP collectible figure

Thats quite a list of problems.

I windex the inside of my Detolf when I remove the figures to dust them. Does this mean the windex will leave behind a compound in the air inside the case that will harm my figures?
